3ds max computer wip
« on: June 05, 2008, 09:06:38 pm »

yeah yeah, i know i shouldn't post a model made in 3ds max, but the least i could do after telling you i'm not using anim8or and using 3ds max is to at least show you what i've done so far. here is the reason i prefer 3ds max: it has more tools, which means i can contruct models faster with the great tools, i made this in less then 30 minutes, still working on it though:

I would be interested in seeing more of your 3ds models. It's an expensive program, and somehow I doubt it would be that much better than Anim8or. I've heard all 3D programs are similar (or can get the same results), since 3D modelling is itself relatively simple (just a cloud of points with some edges connecting them).

No offence, but I'm reminded of the old saying 'a bad workman blames his tools'. I'd rather use the free hammer rather than the state-of-the-art $600 hammer :P

However, this is definitely an ok model. I think it is perhaps a little too 'boxy', the corners are far too sharp. Perhaps also change the material properties: the shadow (on the left panel) looks far too dark compared to the other faces.

hehe, that's nothing to do with the materials, it's the lighting :P

if you did it the right way, then you could try cutting near the edges and then subdividing (in anim8or). That will make it to look more realistic [nothing in the real world has sharp edges actually :) ]

"i made this in less then 30 minutes"
...not to question your talent, but this isn't exactly the best model to use for comparison between Anim8or and 3DS Max...  It's basically just a bunch of boxes.  You could probably build it just as fast with Anim8or.  How about something more complex like a sportscar or the cooling fan from inside the computer.

I use Anim8or and 3DS MAX, and find they both have their pros and cons. I like Anim8or because it is portable, and in some cases more flexible when working with vertices and edges, but I use 3DS Max for the heavy duty modeling, especially if I need some boolean functionality.    I usually create the basic model in Animor, and use Max for refining and final texturing and lighting.

I do think Anim8or handles background reference images better than Max. ...easier to manipulate and no loss of detail.

i use 3ds max because it has much more tools and it's more usefull, anim8or is more limited and simpler, i attempted to use anim8or to make this machine and i spent a hour on it, and i didn't even have a floppy drive, cd drive, not even a power button!
anim8or is too limited to make a good model, if you do make a good model, it will take you weeks, months, mabye even years.

3ds max has a hell lot more tools and is mabye even simpler to use because the added tools, and it definatley isn't as limited as anim8or.
example: the model isn't made up of "just boxes", i used the great "connect" function when i select 2 lines, creating a divider, which makes creating faces way way faster and easier then with anim8or, this is a feature i would love to see in anim8or.

you also can apply several materials to different faces in 3ds max, you might be able to do this in anim8or, but i get the chills at even thinkin about starting simple limited anim8or to see for myself...

I would disagree with you there.  It seems to me you just didn't familiarize yourself enough with anim8or.  I'm not disagreeing that 3ds max is superior overall, but Anim8or does have much easier modeling tools to use.  Unless perhaps you're going for an extremely detailed model where you need operations such as booleans.
An example here:
There is a connect feature in Anim8or.  Select two or more edges and either go "Edit>Connect Edges" or simply press "j".
Anim8or has power, and can create the models you desire, you just haven't spent enough time learning anim8or to know that.
That's my standpoint, but don't be so quick to judge Anim8or or to compare 2 programs unless you've actually experienced them both.

So in summary, yes, 3ds max has much more powerful modeling tools.  It's a commercial program after all.  You're disregarding Anim8or's power too much though.  It's a very powerful tool if you know how to use it.

may i remind you, thehalflifedude, that i made this using anim8or:

anim8or is not limiting. your willingness to learn is limiting.

I agree anim8or has power, maybe you just haven't experienced anim8or fully yet. just because 3D Max is a commercial program and is has more tools doesn't mean anim8or is less capable. look at startrekfan001 amazing picture! This truly shows the power of anim8or. Maybe you should play with anim8or a bit more and fully understand what it is capable of

Um, guys, lets just leave it at this:
The thehalflifedude stops dissing Anim8or, and everyone else stops arguing with him.
After that everyone goes back to living there lives like they did before.

aggreed, as long as they stop arguing about anim8or being a better choice.
