getting started... anim8or 0.95
« on: April 20, 2008, 06:37:28 am »

Hello to all. I am new to this forum, and a total rookie regarding animations. Just a few days ago I dropped onto anim8tor and at first sight found it much better structured than similar programs, so I downloaded it.

Now my question: I unzipped the file and got the anim8or.exe - and nothing else. No scripts, no nothing... is this what it is supposed to be? Next I collected some stuff from your great tutorial sites, but still have no clue where to put what... As I said - a total rookie  ???

Anybody out there willing to help me taking my first steps? I already went through the Anim8tor_basic_instruction.swf and succeeded, but what now?

Thanks in advance for your patience and help.

Don't worry--the great thing about Anim8or is the fact that it is nothing but a small .exe file. That's the way it's supposed to be.

If you want a good start, try the tutorials on the Anim8or site. They'll provide some useful insight to help get you started right away.

Hope that helped :)

Hi Catabina... welcome to the forum..

as xero11213 mentioned, anim8or is simply an exe file.. you can add various scripts though.. but before even starting the tutorial I would suggest to go through the GREAT manual. Read EVERYTHING from page 1.. as you read along the manual you might try that particular topic on anim8or.. I hope that will be your stepping stone... good luck..

Manual:

There are also plenty of scripts you can check out.  You can find a lot of them at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/w.watson3/main.html
But yes, it's mainly a .exe
I'd recommend first reading the manual and playing with all the tools, learning the ins and outs of the program.  Then follow tutorials, google will be your friend there.  After you learn to use the program through the manual and tutorials you'll be able to start on your own project!

Welcome CataBina.  Scripts are not actually necessary for modelling, they just simplify some things.  For instance, you can model a spring manually, but it is a total pain, so a script exists that does it for you.  I have not downloaded any scripts, preferring to do all my modelling myself (working out how to model something is half the fun IMO).

As already mentioned, check out the manual.  For the first few weeks I used Anim8or I had both the program and the manual open, so I could flick from one to the other (which I did often!).  There are a few minor gaps in the manual, but there are always people here on the forums ready to answer questions, especially on the trickier aspects of animation and modelling.

The advice I give to anyone who asks is "experiment".  Anim8or's greatest strengths are its small size and simple interface, but there is still a lot of capability there.  Visualise a scene, as simple or complex as you like, and try to build that scene in Anim8or.  You may not get exactly what you imagined, but you will learn heaps by trying.  For instance, you might want a rotating light, like that on a fire engine.  In figuring out how to achieve this (using the manual) you will learn about light parameters, key frames, possibly even scripting.  Try the tutorials on this site, and there are others on other, less Anim8or specific sites.

Have fun, that's what Anim8or is for!

Whoa, thanks to all for your replies! I have been doing some reading in the manual, followed some steps in one of the flash tutorials, but of course am still far away from really understanding what Anim8or can do. Unfortunately, a full time job leaves not enough time for the great things in life ;-)

What I specifially have in mind is having a winter forest as a background, animated snow (I found the animated rain, so maybe I can play around a bit with that), an old piece of pergament paper which starts moving and a big black bird that will eat it in the end... a story based on a German poem...

Well. Whenever I have the time to start, I will do so, and when I am really desperate and close to jumping out of the window ;-) - I'll be back here, most sure to find help...

Thanks again! Until soon!
