Can I change the default orientation?
« on: February 23, 2017, 03:25:54 pm »

If I have an object 'A' in object editor and I rotate it to -90, 0, 0 it is now oriented so it looks the same as object 'B' whose orientation is 0,0,0,

Can I change the default orientation of A so it now has an orientation of 0,0,0?

I tried cut and paste back the object, I tried to rotate the 'object /axis'.

You can do this if it's a Mesh or subdivision object in a round about way:

1) Rotate it -90, 0, 0.
2) Add a new, simple mesh, such as a dodecahedron, but add it so it's not touching the original mesh.
3) Select both meshes and apply the Build->JoinSolids command. This will reorient the object to 0, 0, 0 and adjust the points accordingly do it's still in the same place.
4) In the point editor drag-select all of the points in the dodecahedron and delete them.

You might also want to move the object's axis back to it's center in Object/Axis mode (hot key O)

Steve,

My experience has been that there's no need to actually add another object: simply select the object which needs to be reoriented and select Join Solids. It seems to work fine even though there's only 1 object to be "joined".

Is there some reason this can't / shouldn't work?

Thanks, seldon. I didn't think of trying that!

I have 5 meshes as a group.  If I just join solids with the group selected it does not work. If I add a mesh, select the mesh and the group, then join solids, it sets the orientation to 0,0,0 (as I want) but I don't think it joins the mesh and the group - I can simply select and delete the mesh in edit mode.

I can reset the orientation with this procedure, thanks.

I'm using 1263.
