Moving glowing lights with TEXT!!!
« on: April 23, 2015, 01:02:11 pm »

Hello All
I've almost completed an animated presentation, but now I would need to create a rotating glowing elliptical object with a text inside (see example attached)
I've read the various methods on how to do the glowing, but for some reason I can't achieve a good result...
I don't know if it would be even possible to do what I'm been asked, in truth.
Can you help me please?

Thank you very much

Hello WOWLAND,

Can you give us a clearer description of the glowing elliptical object that you have in mind.

Hello,
Thank you for your kind suggestions.

I have to rotate this whole sphere (see pic), with has those glowing balloons.
I've already modeled everything, but I can't do those lightning effects.

Using the alpha mask:

1) It would be possible make the glowing lights move exactly as they were an objects?
2) What kind of solid should I use? A flat cylinder? Or a sphere?
3) How should I save the pics to retain alpha mask? PNG?

Thanks!!!

There are a few ways to do this, here's one:

The blobby objects can be created as flat rectangles with the graduated edge effect managed using a transparency map.  The trans map is a bitmap with black edge and white centre, softly graded from one to the other as required (in my test below the edge is a bit too sharp), loaded into the texture area of the Transparency attribute.  With the specular value set to 1.0 and white, the result is a glowing white blob with edges fading to transparent (transparency of 1.0 is fully opaque, 0.0 is transparent, which is a bit counter intuitive...the field should really be called 'opacity' but I digress).  This method doesn't require alpha masks or anything like that.

I used 3D extruded text for the test but it would probably have been better to use images for these in the Specular texture field, ie. create a white background/black text image for each.  Regarding the motion in my very rough test below, each text rectangle is a child of the sphere/stick thing and rotates with it, however their 'Orientation' field is set to 'Other' with 'world' in the reference field, so their orientation remains aligned to the 'world' (ie. does not rotate).

The transmap and Anim8or file are below if picking it apart would be helpful.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, you will need to UV map the texture to the rectangle so it aligns correctly.  If working in Front view, just modifying the UV generally sets the texture to the full width and height of the rectangle by default with no further tweaking required.

Thanks!
Before getting at work, I must point out that the sphere is gonna rotate this way (please ignore the colors)... it will be the same procedure, isn'it?
&feature=youtu.be

Currently, I've put textures with text, to prevent seeing the text backwards when it rotates, so every balloons is splitted in two objects.

If I put the "square of light" between them, I think I must keep them always parallel to the camera... which is something I would like to avoid, since I don't remember how to do it anymore ;)
Do you think there would be any other way?

Thanks again,

The video is showing as private, not able to be seen.  Are you able to adjust the settings in YouTube?

That's fixed it, cheers.  Setting the orientation of an object relative to 'world' keeps it at a fixed angle in all dimensions, so the rectangles would always be facing the front regardless of their location in space.  You can also set them to 'Facing' and relative to the camera (eg. 'camera01').

Creating an actual 3D blob of light with soft edges that can be rotated about is not simple in Anim8or, though I wonder if the dielectric effect could be wrangled to do something like this.  Others may have come up with solutions that look good, I'll have a fiddle with dielectrics and I'll let you know.

WOLAND: I'm still not not sure I know exactly what you want to do. Is it something like this?

I once made a sun with a GIANT half-sphere and a light, and it looked really good. I think the same technique could work here, too!

Sorry about that. Now you can download them. See if you can play in media player.

Are you using Internet Explorer? If so, can you try using Chrome or Firefox?
