In case any one was wondering how my graphics card swap turned out, the difference is spectacular. The "new" card is a second-hand Radeon HD 4550--not an expensive card even when it was new. This upgrade improved the Anim8or workspace performance on this old machine considerably (possibly by a factor of ten--just a guess). Thanks to everyone who offered advice!
