How do I create bump & trans maps?
« on: April 01, 2008, 01:58:45 pm »

Does anyone know of an easy way to create a bump and/or trans map from a picture?
As some bump and trans maps look as though they have just been converted to either greyscale or black and white.
Is this how it's done or am I way off?

Here is a pic of a tree I took today as an example:

Thanks

That is definitely one way to do it.  If you want it more realistic though, it may require you darkening and lightening certain parts.  Converting to grayscale always does a decent job but isn't normally fully realistic.  So to get realistic bumpmaps you'd have to take much mroe time on them and select what you want bumped and what you don't then make them darks and lights.

You can also use the same texture you used for you diffuse map as a bump map. No need to make it black and white or greyscale. I never use those and it works out fine for me. For a trans map you should make it black and white or greyscale.

Just had a go at using the pic in the diffuse and also in the bump with a bump of 40 see the results below.
This program never fails to amaze me.
The only issue I have is that the very front of the tree seems to be slighty out of focus.  ???
Is this normal or is there a way to adjust it?

it probably looks blurred because the texture isn't high-res enough.  it works in principle, but i suspect it'll look more in-focus if you have a higher-res photo.

Of course yeah.........like a fool I've reduced the quality of the pic to post it on here and never copied it.
So i've only got the low res pic left, the res on the original was in 7M(F) as well.

Thanks for the help

I really just got bored, and dont know how I came acrosst this topic, but I made own version using the picture you provided falloffalot, I quickly did this within listening to a few songs of Neil Young.
Reminder: It was just pure boredom
