merge points and UVs

what does anim8or do with uvs if i merge points? does it interpolate, or will i have to re-map?

Try it out for yourself and you'll find out. There's a save and undo feature for a reason ;)

(but to answer your question: UVs are preserved within reason. If you merge points so that it changes the number of edges for a polygon, or merge several points of varying distances together into one point, then things will start getting messy.)
