Difficult to get started - too many new concepts
« on: March 02, 2008, 11:35:09 am »

I have read the manual for a long time and played with Anim8or but find it difficult to create even a simple object. I will very much appreciate if someone can help me show how to create a simple flower - a stem (created from a modified cylinder?), and a few petals. May be one or two antennae coming out from the centre.

I also can't figure out how to select one modifier and one object before I can apply that modifier. When I have only one object, I could do Select All.

Thanks very much.

Have you tried some tutorials? The eggplant tutorial (click here) would help you a lot with your flower model...

You can use all 3 mouse buttons to select, add to selection and deselect; explanation in the manual: http://www.anim8or.com/manual/2_basics.html#mouse_usage
You can also use the Drag-select tool for multiple selections (read the common button meanings)

Good luck...

The first tutorial in the beginners section here is a tutorial on modeling a flower.  Tutorials will be your best friend for creating things right now and they should help you so that these things aren't so difficult.

Also, try searching google first.  I searched for "anim8or flower tutorial" and found that tutorial.

No, I had not seen the tutorial, but saw it today. I think this tutorial explains quite nicely. I haven't had the time to try it myself, but hope to do it this Saturday.

This would have been very nice because I had an idea of animating a flower with flapping wings. I had difficulties running the video file after unzipping. It said some component was missing, but didn't tell me which one. I tried this on an old Windows NT 4. Should I do it on Windows XP or do you think the problem is somewhere else?

That's strange.  Perhaps it's an NT 4 error.  I downloaded it just now, and it worked fine.  I'm running on xp.

Yes, I have had video problems once downloaded in the past too. You might have to download Dvix on the Internet. This might play the file. I think's it's free. But check first

I went through lesson 1 of the eggplant. Too many new things to learn. A smaller first lesson would be better and would not drive away people who find this complicated. I will manage but I feel it is heavy. I also don't have so much time, so it would be better to put the lessons in smaller bits for people like me and many others.

In my opinion, compared to the level of difficulty required for truly "real-world" models, the eggplant totorial is about as simple as can be.  It provides an excellent introductiion to basic modeling tools and concepts, and is just challenging enough to make it feel like you've accomplished something once you've completed it.  Anything more simplistic would be boring.

Hello

The eggplant tutorial is hard, !!! I found it very confusing. Made mine upside down. It's time for a new early starter tutorial. I've just made one as far as the modelling but have to add audio. Nothing to say mine is any clearer!!!

As far as modifiers? Forget them at the moment otherwise your woes will just be starting! Belive me, you can spend hours trying to modify something and find no rhyme nor reason in the method. EG no  graphical indications of what way the modifier will bend. Spend the type modifying it by hand and you will be a much better modeller and less frustrated!

PS of course there is rhyme and reason, but after spending several days trying them out I could not discover it :)

BTW I leave out a lot of my vowels to save spce.

i'm going to have to agree with bystander and headwax (on behalf of friends), though i haven't done the eggplant tutorial myself, my friends (that i introduced anim8or to) who did the tutorial kept coming to me for help, after i read the tutorial i had to retell it to them so they'd understand.
BTW my friends aren't stupid
