Importing objects from other 3D creator programs...
« on: August 07, 2009, 03:08:40 pm »

Hi, I work with Alibre 3D-CAD Design program, and I'd like to animate my project beyond what Alibre can provide.  Is it possible to import a rendered piece into Anim8or?  Or will I have to recreate the entire project from scratch?

you can import objects. I think theres 5 in total. you import/export in .3ds .obj and .vtx. ive read that people want a .x file to be availible to anim8or. i think most or all cad progrqams use .x extension. I think there is conversion programs around the net. I always use .obj, ive heard .3ds isnt stable (i could be wrong).

so what you want to do is find a conversion progtram if urs isnt able to export objects into .3ds or .obj. (Im not sure what the .vtx is) i hope this helped and if im wrong some1 else will chime in.

Not a rendered piece, no, because that implies that it's solely an image, not a model.  I'm guess, though, that Alibre can export a model as a mesh or multiple meshes (.3ds or .obj formats are fairly common, and there are free programs that can transform between different formats, too), which could then be imported to Anim8or for scene creation and framing an animation.  I once created an assembly animation for a client who provided me .obj files for each of the 20 or so subassemblies.

There is a potential problem, though.  Most often, CAD meshes have far more detail -- more points, which means more polygons --- which can really slow down render times.  But there are ways to reduce polygons, too, without losing TOO much detail.
