you need to close the spline for it to extrude, i believe.

Learn to draw in the Object/Point Edit mode, you will thank yourself later - Trust me!

It's the button with the 3 little squares under the eye.

I don't know how new you are to the program - Sorry if it sounds funny - Well I guess it does sound a little goofy. LOL!

I'm not miss leading you - Then you go to another button with three squares but two of them are connected - This is the Add Edge button - Before you start to draw you must hold down the shift key to draw your first line.

ive been using anim8or for about 6 or 7 years now. i know it says newbie under my name but i think thats based on the amount of post not time. i guess to be more specific to my question,  what constitutes a malformed spline, i just wish to understand what it is about this shape that prohibits extruding.

This problem still stumps me.  I was able to extrude a spiral object when I had a zig-zag forming in the middle (though only with every other zig-zag.  for examples, when there were 2, 4 and 6 spline edges crossing the distance from the start point to the end point, it was a malformed spline.  Then, when I had the zig-zag and there was 3, 5, and 7 edges in-between it extruded.  Yet then it didn't seem to work when I did this with curved splines, and I found it was the opposite (2, 4, and 6 switched with 3, 5, and 7.)
Now I find that it doesn't work with more than one loop of the spiral though... so I'm still stumped.

Reading this over I'm completely sure I've confused everyone here, but don't worry, I'm as confused as you are.

Have you tried drawing your spline in a view other than Front ?

I tried to replicate your spline and in Front view I also get the error message of malformed spline, however, in side view it extrudes perfectly.
Maybe a quirk of the program ;)
