Xmas
« on: September 11, 2008, 07:16:31 pm »

There's a lot of animating involved in my Xmas animation so I started early to be finished by December ;)
It's a good thing that it is taking that long for since then I switched from V 0.95 to V 0.97c and what a spectacular change in the rendering with ART.

The first image was made back in July, today I did the second one. Not only are there the additional shadows but also the crispness of the details. Thank you Steve.

Amazing difference!

It's a nice, homely Christmas scene. May I suggest the edition of a skirting board? Seems to add some semblance of reality.

Thank you Headwax.

First time around I had thought of skirting boards but I had rendered too much to do it all over again and then I had forgotten about them. Thank you for reminding me.

Since I am re-rendering anyway the carpenter came and fixed the skirting boards.  ;)

I like the way you've done the fire and in the later renders the chair and table look more attached to the floor with great shadows.
Nice work lynn22

Thank you  falloffalot.

The animation starts with a near dark room with only the fire flickering. Then, slowly, the lights go on to the strength in above pics.
Then the action starts  ;D

That darker pic gives convincing depth through the window. Are the trees in the window a flat image like the fire and the Christmas tree?

falloffalot, my apologies, I was not ignoring your question, I just did not post a reply immediately and then got caught up in other things   :-[

The trees are a flat image like the fire and the Xmas tree. After all, all we do is try to create an illusion for the viewer and how we did it is to them mostly neither here nor there.

However, it takes the strain off my old workhorse PC when rendering.  ;)

That image outside the window does work very well, appearing moonlit and really, really cold, which makes the room itself that much more inviting!  I also use flat photographic images whenever I think I can get away with it, although with animation it can be harder to hide the two-dimensionality than with single renders.

This is really nice work, great use of textures.  My feeling is that the fire could illuminate the room a little more, gently spreading a warm glow across the floor and the seat in the corner, but it is a minor thing.  The only other thing that I could make a suggestion on is the illuminated side table and light cone around it, which makes me think there should be a lamp on it, from which the light comes.  Excellent work though, I like it a lot.

you should set the specular on the Christmas tree to 0. Because the reflection is in the transparent places as well.. You used transmap right?

Thank you ENSONIQ5 and a lamp it is !  You are right, the light needs to come from somewhere.

Mactetra, the specular on the tree is 0. Just keep in mind that the final viewers of the animation willl only see the tree and a few other things sort of from the corner of their eye because their attention is on what's moving. Viewers don't analyse single frames as we tend to do.

yes, but we're all going to notice it when we watch the animation now!  just because we know it's there.  :o

if you could just get rid of that opaque surround on the tree, you would upgrade the image from 'nearly-perfect' to 'perfect'.  a bit of work on the transmap, and it should be impeccable.  honest ;)

very nice lamp, btw ;D

Few things here that are annoying me and degrade this still .

1: the decorations seem way to big ! they could be scaled down a tad.

2: the window looks flat, perhaps a bump map to the material , same applies to the picture

3: Ditto with the fire It needs some depth

Other than that looking quite nice, will be better animated I know

I disagree somewhat. It;s akk a matter of style - what style lynn is aiming at. Not superrealism perhaps, but a christmassy feel.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions guys but I have to move on now.

I still have to finish Rudolf then rig and animate him to dance to the tune of "Jingle Bell Rock" and hundreds of frames to render.
Last make a music score to finish it all off.

Add it all up and there's not much time left till Xmas  ;D
