READ-COMMENT RATIO
« on: April 04, 2009, 03:56:05 pm »

TO: Any Moderator/Administrator

Hey, i noticed in the Works in Progress forum that the read-comment ratio is suprisingly far apart. There are quite a few interesting projects that get about a hundred reads, but no post! or a thousand reads, but 20 posts...

I know this is not uncommon in forums but i think its very discouraging on the animors here [well, atleast on my part it is]

I think the problem arises from the fact that may are busy and just can't find time to comment... is there anyway to make a quicker way to post a reply [ i realise the difficulty, but consider it in the long term] or maybe put some quick-rating options? It could really help in output.

Please consider this, help in any way you can.

There is indeed a big difference in the amount of views and comments. This has various reasons as you stated. Must of us are busy or just simply have nothing to say.

I can't think of a quicker way to reply to topics, we already have the quick reply option (below the topic). This should be fast enough. A rating system could be a solution, but i don't think it will add alot. Rating a topic costs about the same time as writing a comment.
What we need is more active users: about half of the users never posted anything.

Also if you want more comments on your topics, ask for it. By giving information, wireframes, links we can see your progress, which makes it easier to comment.

Don't be mistaken, this is not a problem that needs a solution. The replies/views ratio is actually much higher here than almost anywhere else. If you're impatient to get replies to your WIPs and such, then improve the quality of your posts in a way that would make users want to reply. This isn't a chat room and spamming isn't allowed here, and what you're asking for us to adjust is borderline on both. Also, adding a rating system isn't much of a solution, as floyd86 said, not to mention users might be discouraged by the ratings they get.

Also you need to note that guests can view topics and add to the tally of Views, along with search engine crawlers/bots.

Estimated averages for the WIPs sections of various forums
(Replies/Views - ie Anim8or.com has 1 reply for every 22 views):
Anim8or.com: 1/22
BlenderArtists.org: 1/38
Threedy.com: 1/83
CGTalk.com: 1/96

So looking at those numbers, be grateful we have this much participation.

I just don't reply unless I feel I really have something to add. I only put in a "Wow, good job" if the work really made me say that in real life. If someone else has said the same thing I want to say, I just leave it alone. Truth be told, this post is about as superfluous as I'll get.

Thanks, Floyd, Raxx, i guess i've been 'educated', i had no idea about the ratio being way better here, so i guess i'll just have to improve any time.

And Dreadkb? i guess thats how most people feel, so i shouldn't expect too much i guess.

Thanks again guys for replying. :)
