hi, jaron!  welcome to the forum!  help yourself to one of my newly-invented Virtual Biscuits:

i think you'll find most (maybe all) of us would say we do anim8or as a hobby, it's just some of us are more obsessive about it than others.   ::)  we still have to balance it with other stuff, like education, jobs, etc, but it's amazing how much some people get done when they use their spare time effectively.  i'm not one of them, i have to admit - i'm still working on an anim8or movie i started in december 2006, just because other stuff keeps getting in the way...

but don't let that put you off!  use what time you can, post your work here so we can offer you advice and feedback and stuff, and above all, enjoy ;D

since we're in 'introductions' mode, my name's pronounced 'KOL-kluf', btw  ;)

Hi doom! Yes, the anim8or forum is really good. Post your own topics etc... You have to start somewhere. Everybody is still learning. Always new things to do. It is a hobby of mine, I go on anim8or everyday. If I was you, read the anim8or manual, it helps alot! I always read it time to time. Oh I forgot, spicy is the name!

hello, please make yourself welcome in the forum, but wipe your feet first, i know this is a little off topic, but speaking of profile pictures, what is the nominal size? since i'm trying to get a new one up, and is it better to have a bmp or a jpeg?
again, welcome!

Hi Jaron (Doom),
I'm new here too.  It's nice to see young folks take up this as a hobby (or profession).  I'm gonna need lots of help around here.  I wanted to model a wheel, but I can't do it from memory because we didn't have them when I was your age.  Ha ha.

falloffalot-I hope you have soft padding inside that thang, cause getting a dent in it would hurt as much as falling off and hitting a rock.  I love ethnic food.  I think I'll change my screen name to falafel-alot.  Go Gyros!

I would not recommend bmp at all... the file size is bigger and there's no need for extra image quality... jpeg with middle level of compression will do...

as for the size... I think there's no point of making the image larger than 200x200 px, I guess the size will be decreased if it's to big...

G'day Doom, good to have ya.  My advice, have a good read of the manual, check out some of the tutorials here, on animanon.com and on anim8or.org, ask questions on the forums, etc, but most importantly, just experiment.  It does not matter what you make, post it in the WIP section.  People here are friendly and encourageing, and offer advice freely.  We are an inclusive bunch, and there are often group projects and contests going that are lots of fun and very educational.  There is currently a newb group project underway, there are links to it on this site, and they are always looking for participants.

As colclough said, we are all hobbyists... I suppose pros would be using Lightwave or something expensive like that.  Just remember, Anim8or is a work in progress, being built by one bloke in his spare time, so there are a few gliches, and gaps in the manual.  He relies on the Anim8or community to test his upgrades as he progresses towards the ultimate goal of Anim8or version 1.0, and in the meantime we get to play with this awesome piece of software.  Good deal, huh?

Following the trend of username pronunciation and explanations (kicking myself that I didn't pick the whole falloffalot/helmet thing) my username comes from my Ensoniq SQ80 synthesizer, which sits beside me as I type this, and was the first thing my eyes alighted upon as I tried to think of a name.  I dunno where the "5" came from...
