Scene Mode : Camera/World Problem
« on: November 27, 2010, 04:16:06 pm »

In this picture the world appears way too small:

In this picture the world has been expanded to a slightly more appropriate size, but its so big that there is a gap in it:

In this image I have shrunk the robot to make the world appear bigger, but it can't get close to the camera because the camera will go through it.

Is there a way to make the view of the camera start earlier? And perhaps end later? Another thing that bothered me was that the camera's pivot point was odd, is there a way to make it more precise?

This may be due to Your Z-Limits settings.  You can change them by clicking View > Z Limits.  Lower the Z-Near setting.

Nice image, fromsoysauce! I like the atmospheric effects & the flyer looks cool too!

The size of the earth all depends on how high above the earth it is flying of course, in the first picture it is more a space-ship, whereas in the second one it approaches airplane-level altitude.

You can also just move the world back a bit and increase its size.

Thanks Simon, but *Face Palm, my bad for using confusing terminology.

It's not really supposed to be THAT big. When I said "the world" I wasn't talking about the earth, I was talking about the environment. The sky is not supposed to look quite like an atmospheric effect as much as a typical oceanic horizon line.

What I didn't explain, was that the problem was that it looks, as you say, like it is a representation of the horizon of the earth from an astropoint. When I really wanted it to look like plain and flat horizon.

What I want to do is make a video based on the box art I made for the game I just released. See a comparison hear:

But when the camera goes at certain angles like the one above, the effect is as Simon explained, which is not at all what it should look like.

Rudy, I just tried that out, but nothing seemed to change.

Those are very nice models. The human one looks amazing.

Anywho. If I'm not mistaken you have a bit of a problem with the perspective making the thing look big? Try toying around with the camera FOV and then set the camera back. This should probably flatten the image and not quite make the background 'world' look like a planet. By doing this you'd also not have the problem of having the ship disappear despite it looking a little bigger.

Another thing to note. When you're making a 3D image the things don't have to be really in scale with one another :D So you could toy around with the actual distance and size relationships to get the effect you want.

You mean my Zoey? Thanks, I'm quite proud of how she came out:

Back on topic,  Janro, Interesting, I didn't know about the camera properties. I see your point though, and I guess theoretically, what I could end up doing is using a flat angle whenever needed and when I want to show the bigger picture, to make the robot and Zoey appear to be in a bigger world, just make them tiny objects.

I'd like to ask another question though.

Well, this film is an animated version of the first boss battle in the actual game, and in the game, lots of crazy stuff happens, lasers all over the place.

I was wondering if there was any efficient way to control stuff like this, particles or whatever.

Anim8or doesn't have particle effects but there are been programs which generate these for you. Namely Random8or and Terranim8or. Although I'm not sure if they can produce the type you want.

Those lines of spheres I think you could try having all the sphere's as one object and then angling the camera in such a way that you don't see the either end then let it fly past the camera. If you need an angle requiring to see the edges, playing around with Z clipping to cut off the sphere's so that it's generated with the same look as in the gameplay.

Laser's can be simple cylinders or polygons if they're only going to be seen for a split second. Alternatively if it's a laser that blasts from it's starting point to the distance you can play with morph targets for that cylinder.

Any specific effect you are trying to duplicate from this video?
