Is there any software or anyway a .jpg, .gif, etc can be converted to a 3d file format that I can import into Anim8or? Thanks.

No, it’s not possible to convert a 2d image to 3d. But you can make a references image (Build->Reference Image..)

I agree with Monex, the only way to get a good 3d object out of an image is to simply use build->reference and use that as your work space, HOWEVER, there are some things you can do to attempt to get a 3d object. You might find that tweaking will take just as long as having made it from scratch, but, here is an example from google
http://groups.google.com/group/SketchUp3d/browse_thread/thread/1aa3eede1aee61ea/
I also believe that there are some tools out there that will attempt to do 3d object (usually only ground mapping) out of greyscale images in bmp format. If memory serves me correctly terragen used to do this.

AccuTrans3d might be able to do that depending on how complex the image is.  I
found their website here...http://www.micromouse.ca/  I'm not sure what formats
you need, but since converting 3d formats is the main use of the software, you
will probably find something that works.  Anim8or will take .Obj or .3ds files and
a couple others too.

You can use Archipelis designer available from www.archipelis.com for any 2d pic ... it will use the picture as the texture map, there is a demo available but you cannot save the obj or 3DS file.

38 euros for full version.
