After a LONG time in the works, I've finally published my first songs!
Of course I had to make lyric videos to go with them, and to do that I've made a lot of use out of Anim8or!

The first song, "Leading Me" begged for a Vaporwave look. I saw an image where someone created a cool effect with a glass ball that turned everything upside down, and thought it was perfect! I made my own scene with my Jesus statue, the Greek pillars I made in other artwork, and made some plants and other greenery. It looks so appropriately 90s to go with the sound of the song!

The next video is a bit more on the 2D side. I painted the rose and the background, but the falling petals were made with Anim8or. I made them fall with Physics by turning them into a particle effect in Unity!

Anim8or v1.0 Discussion Forum / Re: Bug? JPEG ≠ JPG
« on: February 17, 2025, 11:08:41 pm »
I had started a fresh Anim8or file, and tried to import the image as a Reference Image. I attached it below.

The one with the JPEG extension can't be found at all, and the one with the JPG extension is the one where I changed it to JPG by renaming the extension in Explorer. Trying to open this image file through the Reference Image menu causes Anim8or to crash.

However, if I open the image in Paint and save it as JPG, it opens in Anim8or without any problems.

I did a little research and discovered that apparently, there are a few differences between JPG and JPEG, namely that JPEG allows storing metadata which JPG does not. Perhaps this could cause some conflict in what Anim8or is expecting when it tries to read the file.

Anim8or has always been able to open JPG files, and I always thought JPG and JPEG were one and the same, and interchangeable. But not only does Anim8or not find files labeled JPEG, but changing the extension to JPG manually and then trying to open it causes Anim8or to crash.

Are JPG and JPEG really fundamentally different?
Is it a complicated fix to recognize JPEG?

Not that it's hard on my end to use an art program to save as .jpg, but it seems like an extra step.

I call this one "Afloat". It's the simplest composition and was the quickest to make (besides creating my own background), but so far it's my favorite and I adore it.

Two new artworks!

1. "Tiled", reminds me of old VHS covers or a "Coming soon to own" screen.
2. "2.1 Gigabyte Sandwich", inspired by "Four Byte Burger" by Jack Haeger.

These designs are now available as T-Shirts and other merch on my TeePublic store!

I modified the last two designs to be a bit more dynamic since I hate slapping a square on a T-Shirt, so those two have the originals separately as Prints.

I still plan to make more and upload them as another wave in the future.

I also finished another new artwork!

This one required a bit more editing in post. Obviously the scribble was added after the fact, but you probably noticed ART doesn't render fog. I achieved this by
1. making a HUGE dielectric cube with minimum IOR so the light wouldn't bend, and an appropriate UnitDistance so that at least the color would overtake in the distance.
2. Adding a gradient over the background in post.

If there's any (possible) smarter way to achieve fog with the ART renderer, I'd love to hear it!

CoriDavis how much memory does Anim8or use when you're rendering the scenes?

When I use Multithreaded ART, it uses about 93-95% of the CPU. I attached a snapshot of my monitor during a render.

The image of Jesus with the pillars still had the issue whether or not it was multithreaded. It didn't even matter if it was ART or Scanline. It only goes up to 15% at the most when it's not multithreaded.

Image 1 is Multithreaded, Image 2 is Singlethreaded.

Ah heck, I didn't realize that was there. Was it added recently?

So many times I've made a texture and not realized how much I'd need it more throughout my project beyond the first object I made with it. But there's no way to easily change it from "Object" to "File" without remaking the texture, or perhaps editing the code of your Anim8or file if you're clever.

It would be nice to have a checkbox or dropdown within the material dialog that can allow you to switch the assignment at any time.

Alternatively it would be cool to be able to copy/paste materials, not only as a way to move a material between File and Object, but to make it easier to make a new material based on an existing one without having to redo all the settings from scratch. But I imagine that would be a lot harder to implement.

I do agree. If you don't already know how it works, you'd have no clues how to use it in its current state.

It would make a lot of sense to have drop-down menus of the current classes and attributes instead of expecting to already know what to type (and risking typos, resulting in it not working). And for each attribute, users could go to the manual to learn what they do, or it would even be great if there was a tooltip that briefly explained them.

This would even make it more enticing to experiment with different attributes and combinations.

Here's my next one! Special appearance from my Jesus model.

I had a very strange issue with this scene that I was never able to fix, causing Anim8or to crash every time I'd render more than once. I narrowed it down to having something to do with more than three pillars in the scene (specifically the curly ones). I could render ONCE, freshly after opening Anim8or, but if I tried to render again after that (ie. changing something and trying to render again), the program would crash. I troubleshooted for hours before giving up and working with only three pillars.

Did some editing in post, and adding a Bloom effect really pulled it together. I love this one even more than the first.

I've attached the unedited version with no filters under the finished piece so you can see what it looked like straight out of the render.

The forums ate my first attempt at posting this, so hopefully it doesn't post twice!

I wanted a background for my Portfolio page on my website, so I made this! I'm still super obsessed with Vaporwave aesthetics and music, and wanted to make one of those geometric abstract images myself.

After rendering, I edited it in GIMP. I even made a CRT screen version of it, and a dot-printed effect! The print version is my favorite.

If I make more of these, I'll post them here. I do still need to make at least one more image for another page on my website.

(and yes, my profile looks different! I've recently rebranded from Scamarca Productions to SammyJ Studios!)

That looks amazing! I LOVE it! I'm thrilled to see more people lipsyncing and animating characters these days.

I use my video editor to do this. Import your video, and when you export/render, most editors have a PNG/JPG option which will export the video as image frames.
