General Anim8or Forum / Re: New to 3D Animation
« on: November 12, 2013, 06:39:07 am »
Hi Drew, I'm also new to 3D modelling and animation. I have found Anim8or to be quite powerful and relatively easy to use.

Here is some things I have learnt:
1. Read the manual, it helps a great deal. Print it out if you can.
2. Anim8or can handle some advanced features using ART or Anim8or Ray Tracer, if you intend to use advanced effects like real reflections and transparency (glass type), you will need to understand how ART works, which basically involves using attributes. You can read about ART here But in brief to use ART, you need to set it as the renderer, and for every material that you want to add advanced effects you have to add Attributes. eg Attribute Specular, with string value reflection.
3. Rendering: ie  creating the final output movie or image, can take a lot of time depending on a number of factors like complexity of scene, ART effects etc. For movies it can take hours (sometimes days) to create the final video file , so understand that when first learning creating your animations. This is not just something that happens with Anim8or, the Blender movie Elephants Dream took a whopping 125 days to render on a supercomputer!
4. There are different ways to achieve the desired result, lathing, extruding, splines, box modelling, etc.. The trick is to know as many as you can and use the one that will work the quickest/best!
5. You might want to check out Cyberdog's Anim8or page, its quite useful.

To add on to what johnar has said:

You can use it with a free program called Spacescape to make some impressive skyboxes.

You can read more about it here.

General Anim8or Forum / How do you make this wheel?

HI folks I'm new both to Anim8or and to the forum so if I posted in the wrong area please forgive me.

I just wanted to know how you create the wheel, or more correctly the mag in this picture:
I can handle the wheel no problem with that great tool the lathe.

I really like how it looks but I haven't been able to create something like this. So can any of the experienced members of this great forum please give me an idea of how this can be done, and if possible the processes step by step?

@ ianross No problem!

I just noticed a rather interesting program on the list called Silent Walk Renaissance (http://www.silentworks.hu/swr/index.php)

Whats interesting about the tool, (from what I have seen after playing with it for a while is):
1. Its free, no nag screens, no trial version
2. It allows you to create (basic) FPS games without coding!
3. They also added scripting support using the well known GML, although I haven't seen examples of how to use it (Game Maker Language) apparently the 3D engine itself was made in GM too.
4. Its supports .OBJ and .MD2 and anim8or supports exporting to .OBJ so that's a good thing!
5. You create the rooms/levels using a 2D interface which I find quite nifty.
6. Games are ready to distribute as soon as you save the level, just go to the projects folder and distribute the exe and the accompanying data folder, to anyone that wants to play the game.

I should also mention that from what I have read on their forums this 3D engine isnt particularly powerful and advanced effects like bump mapping and shaders aren't currently supported.

So what do people think?
