when i use lines and try to make an umbrella and then lathe it,it fills the area where there was supposed to be a hole.

to make your 3d object with that picture just do the same as before:
first select your drawing
second click on build->extrude and set it to Z axis

to make a 3D text you need to:
first-make the text.
second-extrude it by going in:build->extrude.
