I have had an accident with my laptop (which stores ALL of my Anim8or files)
I forgot it was plugged in & tripped over the power cord and fell on it. It is now in bits in a box and the HDD is now Inaccessible. :-[ :-[ :-[
A note to all.....Back up your files.......
sadly I never and now I've lost the lot.
(Nice new look to the forum steve)

Maybe not all is lost yet. A good repair shop should be able to transfer your files from your harddisk to a new computer.

Thanks lynne22
I have tried 2 local PC repair shops and they both say it's knaked.
-
I had that experience a couple of days ago. The computer started slowing down then the computer wouldn't turn on! :-[
Eventually it turned on and I got my stuff back. :)
But as falloffalot said back up your files!
-
I would give it a 3rd and last try with another repair shop. Who knows, 3rd time lucky.
Telling you it's done for is the easy way out if they don't know what they are doing. ;)

Hard drives are fairly tough, stepping on a computer and breaking the outer case shouldn't have trashed the drive. I'd keep trying, bring the HD without the computer to a repair place and ask them if they could attempt to read the drive. You might have to find a smaller mom & pop place vs one of the larger chain stores.
I've got two guys in my area that are really honest and good, only charged me $17.50 labor and no parts to replace my CPU fan after everyone else wanted $75.00 to $100.00.

It is extremely unlikely that the drive is damaged. I have been in the computer repair business since the late '80s. Here is my suggestion: I would go to the computer store (circuit city, best buy, etc.) and buy a external USB connector (or enclosure) for the laptop drive. You can plug it into another computer yourself and read off the important files. The external USB connectors are about $5 on Ebay, enclosures are about $12 on Ebay. Enclosures or external cables are $20-$40 at stores like circuit city:

Even cheaper if you can wait for it to ship:

Jason: Don`t go to Computer World They`ll tell you it no good.....trust me ... try a local small company. As everybody here has told you the Hard-drive is intact.... I can`t remember where in the UK you are But I would gladly do it for you N/C

i was trying to plug in the power chord to my touchscreen tablet pc, and i dropped it on a surge strip and the lcd shattered to pieces :'( luckily, it ran on flash memory, which is not nearly as fragile as hdd disk memory, so i got it all back.

Thanks for the advice guys.
The HDD flew out of the bottom of my laptop and bounced across hardwood floor, with most the buttons. :'(
Thanks for the kind offer Kev (Kreator) but, the problem I have is I work for the Government and therefore I am unable to leave this drive unattended with a third party. (I’m not a spy or 007 before any one asks).
A colleague is taking it to bits to see if it can be repaired. Fingers crossed.

w8....u work for the government yet your more worried about losing your anim8or stuff??? :-\
i'd guess the government stuff is A: backed up on some government server, so it's not permenantly lost, and B: it's probably boring anyway... right? :P ;D
...unlike anim8or work, which is usually irreplaceable, and much more interesting than any government records (apart from the MI6-type ones, but he's already said he doesn't work for the secret service)!

yea Jason I have the files that you gave me like the fly, classroom, and maybe the mine cart but I'll have to double check that. I believe that I also have some textures and tutorials that you made so if you need any of these things I'll email them to you ;)

Thanks guys
I have had a bunch of discs dropped on my desk with hopefully useful data.
Not had chance to have a look yet and I've not replaced my laptop yet.
