Title: Doodles
Post by: CowTail on July 01, 2008, 06:33:52 pm
i figured i'd get more exposure by posting the same stuff in the same kind of topic at both anim8or.com and anim8or.org so that non-org users can take a look at my stuff

i'm reserving this topic as a posting place for my artwork that isn't specific to any project i'm working on!

here's my first doodle i'm working on, some kind of pig-like alien!

whoa... ugly-as-heck alien (i'm guessing that was intentional?), but very cool modelling!  8)

like mactetra said, keep posting!

Good modelling and imagination. I love the alien, it looks very cool. It would be good to see some textures when its fully finished

This model is just sick...
I agree with B3Dman, that is an area I really need to work on.

Texturing tight areas on a subdivide is a real pain.
The model looks how you want it, then you add a texture and it overlaps all over the place and bleeds into areas where you don't want it to.

At first I thought you were making some kind of post-modern sculpture of a woman dancing in the sunlight on a cool winters day rejoicing at her newfound independence from a male dominated world.

And I thought....hmmm, its a quality model...I can picture it displayed in the corner of a large cubist condominium with many windows, white walls, and very few pieces of furniture.

Maybe a few bean bag chairs and a doooofay '.

But then you added a pig nose and I thought AHA! Now that I can relate to.
Pig beasts wearing freaky helmets are always cooler than post-modern art (in my humble opinion)

I'm just being silly (ignore me)

Seriously I really like it. Did you use colored lighting? It looks like you did.

i'm glad you guys like it! he's intentionally ugly, being some sort of pig kind of alien (i consider pigs ugly, therefore the alien must be ugly ;))

the lighting isn't colored, but the background has a slightly blue-ish cast added to the diffuse material. there are two infinite lights, one facing down at an angle and one facing up at an angle. the one facing up is less intense to provide a backlight kind of effect

here's a screenshot of my setup. as you can see it's really simple

update: i changed the eyes! he's not as alien-like, and is more like a fantasy kind of creature, but i like these eyes better. i also made some improvements to the helmet, but am still working on it

the new version's definitely better.  the new eyes look a lot more realistic, and i like the flange you've added at the front of the helmet.

How do you change the intensity of an infinite light?

and you added tusks to the sides of the head ;) i like them!

Who says anim8or's modeler sucks?.....You did do this in anim8or, right?

PLanAhead: to change the intensity, you change the color.  Anim8or can not really create lights that cast black, as black is not a color, it's an absence of color.  So when something is closer to black, it will have a lower intensity.

I don't like the creature (I hate pigs) but it's absolute beautiful modeling, well done.

WOW
Belongs in the gallery!
You kept it quite low poly, and made me feel like a newb at the same time.

updated the head a little bit! in general i've been tweaking and getting prepared to start on the body...i'm trying to update at least once a day unless i've done nothing ;)

as a change of scenery i'm working on a phone on the side! try to guess what model it is!
theres more detail than just the silouhette but i'm just having fun being mysterious ;)

my appreciations go to you fellow artists!

tanzim: its not that low poly since its a subdivision object, but the original cage wireframe is kind of efficient ;) i'm not sure if i'd finish enough of this pig for it to be placed in the gallery, its starting to make my computer cough up blood!
lynn22: i hate pigs too! thanks!
xalener: of course it was done in anim8or! ;) anim8or's modeling tools are great, but there needs to be a few more features changed and added for it to completely satisfy me!
B3dman: oops, forgot about the tusks! they were easy to install ;)
PlanAhead: as hihosilver said, you just change the color! the light angling down was completely white, and the light angling upward as the backlight was set to a medium-to-dark gray!
thecolclough: i like the flange thing too :) in this update I added some more detail/contour to it but thats where the changes will probably stop!

version 3 = even better than before... again!  8)

i think the fatter neck is quite appropriate for a pig-type species.

Same, looking better.
And yeah, that's what I meant, the 'actual' poly's not the 'virtual' ones.
And I believe that's a Blackberry, though I'm not really into phones.

yep, it's a blackberry 8830!

i've done a bit more for the phone, probably going to go back to the pig for a while before i update it again!

(http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/377/23rli0.th.jpg) (http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/377/23rli0.jpg)

areas i need to work on:
sides are basic, still need a lot of detail
screen is just a texture, will add more detail there and make my own graphic for it ;) also needs antennae light thing on top right
the entire back needs to be done

i'll add a clay render to show the modeled details in some future update!

thats incredible!! i think you should model a version where the alien has a nice muscular body as well. you are doing great!

Nah, that's great. Don't forget B3dman: It's inspired by a pig. It already has a fat looking face (cheeks) and a chunky neck so I think the body is fine.

But really: this is amazing. Are you using reference images, or just making it up as you go along still?

B3dman and Dosser , thanks! i decided to go in between and make him fatly muscular!

i'm just going with the flow with its design, after this update i'm going to take him in an entirely different direction now! as you can see in the updates below, i just made his arms and hands extra large!

render (camera distortion makes the features extra-exaggerated :P):

Wow that is amazing I like how you make him a little fat since he is a pig thing. Organic modeling is something I need to work on. I am going to have to watch this thread.
