Title: bismark w.i.p
Post by: thehalflifedude on May 03, 2008, 04:28:19 pm
heres a wip of the great german battleship, bismark: (http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/7941/bismarkv1image1bz6.png) (http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/4011/bismarkv1image2ay5.png) (http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/8828/bismarkv1image3rn6.png)

Good start for a newb! I like it. I like the guns at the back of the ship. By the way, when you rendered the image did you turn antlaised? That get's rid of bad edges when rendering the image and gives it a more better look. Menu>Render>Turn on Antlaised. Looks cool though. How long have you been using anim8or?

um... for like 2 years now....

EDIT: heres a annoying bug that makes it hard for me to enjoy making bismark: (http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/6899/annoyingbugoutbuttonsanpd3.png) know what could be causing this?

look on the left, ignore the reference image i am using for the bismark :P

What bug? All I can see is that you must be using a reference image? I also see that all the buttons are selected, is that the bug you was on about? Sorry, can you explain your self a bit more. Welcome to the forum by the way :)

yeah, it's really hard for me to know what button i was last using, so i end up hitting random buttons and screwing up my model, then all of a sudden the buttons are all back to normal.

I believe I've had that bug before, I'm not sure exactly what the problem was.  What version are you using though?  More recent versions haven't given me any of those troubles.

Yeah that has happened to me a few times. I don't know what it is or what causes it. All I do is click on drag select button, drag select and it goes back to normal. It happens quite a few times for me. Don't know why though. How may times does it happen to you?

it happens often. i don't know how many times, but it probably won't go away.

I am using v97 preview version and it still happens to me. Not very often though, only a few times a day

me too, mabye it might have to do with our video cards or somthing? i have a onboard video card which runs really slow if using opengl, so making bismark has a really low fps, if i increase the fps in settings, it actually runs slower.

I don't think it's video card, anim8or's graphics come from the CPU not the video cards (I am sure it does, that is what I was told). I don't think the bug is from the video card, I am unsure. Maybe Steve knows?

well let's just push all that aside, after all, i can just make a new topic about the 2 annoyances. now back to the bismark.

Back to the Bismark indeed! Are you going to add some textures to it once it is completed?

if i can FIND some textures. it's really hard to find textures for a legendery battleship that was sunk to the bottom and not many people would take pictures of it in time on the internet :P

Okayyyy! Well why don't you surf the internet for other battleship textures. It will all look the same, just make sure the textures look simular

They look better, you have added a few more bits to it. How long have you been modelling this?

Looks good for an hour, where did you get the reference image from? I must admit, that's a good start

i don't care :) if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. anwyway, i'm starting to get to a very detailed part, so i might not reply for a while.

EDIT: if you were thinking i am making this because i am bored, you are wrong, i was inspired to make this model because of this (http://www.megavideo.com/?v=27OD7OM7) video ;)

!!update!! added a s#$load of stuff to teh bismark (well, not really, but i've added a little) and the captains bridge or whatever was too hard so i put this up instead: (http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1350/bismarkv3image1sf0.png) (http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/6835/bismarkv3image2jm9.png) (http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2470/bismarkv3image3ve8.png) i am not focusing on detail, i'm focusing on getting teh bismark done, so all i have to add are the other small turrets and i'm ready for the big challange: texturing it. !!update!!

Just a couple of corrections, guys:

1.
I don't think it's video card, anim8or's graphics come from the CPU not the video cards...

Not exactly.  Anim8or doesn't use the GPU for rendering an actual JPEG or BMP image.  However, it DOES rely on Open GL graphics for how it presents images on the screen during modeling and in the scene window.

2.  If you're going to be correct, thehalflifedude, the proper spelling for this infamous German battle, ship, it's Bismarck, with a "c."  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_battleship_Bismarck

It's a great model, well on the way to being excellent.  My only criticism is that if you are going to call it the Bismarck, you really should attempt to model it accurately.  I am not entirely sure what the "captain's bridge" is, but if it existed on the real ship, it should exist in some form on your model.  It may be difficult to model, but could I suggest you post a few pics (if you have them) of that part of the ship.  Maybe some other Anim8ors can help with advice on how to build it.

All in all, though, its a great start.  I have not seen too many warships modelled in Anim8or, and I am really looking forward to seeing the final textured, rigged and rendered work.

i have added a different captain bridge that i think i have seen on some other ships.

nice job but the hull profile could do with a little more attention. here's a good example:

halflifedude:
Have a look at Genetica Viewer 2.5 (its free) for your textures,or check out this thread http://www.anim8or.com/smf/index.php?topic=721.0
That bug happens on my low mem laptop but not on my high end PC. You could try and reduce the amount of applications you have running. (just an idea)
Nice ship BTW.

that's my thread :P XD :) >:] anyway, i'll try out that other program you mentioned.

EDIT: i tried the program you mentioned, and it's a hell heck lot better then finding textures on the web, as a matter of fact, it actually got me to try out bumpmapping, as it actually creates the bumpmap after you render:
(my first bumpmap :) )

EDIT: when i said "after you render" i meant in the program you mentioned, not in anim8or :P
