Title: Mascots
Post by: hihosilver on April 24, 2008, 08:44:55 pm
I'm working on two mascots for the Anim8or.org (http://www.anim8or.org/) mascot competition as the site is being redesigned and expanded.
This is my first entry, I may throw some textures on, like a slight bumpmap and simple diffuse map but overall he's mainly finished.  I'm sticking with the blue gums, but I didn't want to render out another normal image with blue gums.
He's fully rigged and animate-able.
Tell me what you think:

Your mascots awfully happy, good luck with the comp!
You might want to work on the feet though, they look a bit flat, and maybe round off the toes.

Those are really good. I like the teeth. The eye's is also dark and cool. Good luck with the competition as well

Thanks everyone.
Tanzim:  You may be right about the feet.  I had the toes rounded previously, but I felt this would make them more stylized.  Perhaps it wasn't the right way to go about it.  Since I've already rigged the model, and now UV mapped it, I'm not going to change this, but thank you for the C&C, I apologize if it seems like I'm not taking your advice.  I do hear you though.
So here's what I've done, UV mapped him:

UV mapped it's a great mascot.
It looks so much better than the green variety which made me think of a pea with oversized dentures  ;D

It looks alot better with the texture hihosilver! It does look wierd, but it also looks stylish

i think it would look best if you hybridised the two colour schemes, and had the UVed version for most of the parts, but kept the black eyes, and maybe also the solid-colour gums.  i think the textured eyes make it seem less alive than before.

all just imo, of course :)

Yeah, the eyes should be black for a realistic effect. Not sure about the gums, maybe you should return them back to normal (Still looks cool though). Or don't, I am not sure if the texture and some pink gums would go together. But the black eyes is a good idea

Haha, well thank you all.  I'm glad you like the new texture  :P
Just to let you all know though, that was never actually meant as a texture.  As you can see, it's a numbered grid.  It's meant to show off the UV mapping to show how well or unwell it deforms.  So if the squares/numbers were stretched or skewed, then that wouldn't necessarily be good UV mapping.  People often use simple black/white checkerboard patters to do this as well.
Haha, I guess it was a misunderstanding that paid off though.  I'm glad you like the texture's color.
As for the actual texture which I'll be painting, I think I'll perhaps give the creature a bit of a hybrid of the two.  Perhaps a creamy color with some green mixed in, we'll see.  Another thing to know though, no color for a texture is definite.  If this were to become a mascot, it would be textured differently for different occasions.  So I plan to make the texture versatile.

People often use simple black/white checkerboard patters to do this as well.

so that's why steve included 'CHECKS' as the sole default texture in anim8or?  i never realised that before, i always just thought it was some random image that he put in for development testing... :-\ :D

Thanks for the heads up, now I know what CHECKS is for

Cool! I never knw that! CHECKS you say? Better start investigating myself :)

that's not a definite fact, guys, just a semi-educated guess... i always wondered why the loaded textures list always included 'CHECKS', and this is my best guess at why ;D

Haha yes, that's probably one reason why he has the CHECKS texture.  I figure it's also colored so that you can view colors as well.  The CHECKS texture is an all-around very generic texture that can be used for many things.

Now, you can see my texturing!  Here's two different textures.  Both very similar, mainly just different color schemes.
Crit away!

I personally don't have any crits, it's a great model and I love the teeth!

Wow that is a great model. I dont have much to say but how did you model that, how did you make your textures and does your creation have a name ;)

well, i've never seen anything with tartan teeth before ;)

i think, personally, i prefer the yellow one over the green.  just imo.

Finished.
Thanks for your support.
Spicy:  Thanks, that's just the UV map  ;) not going to keep that for the teeth.
RnDr FOX:  Thanks.  I modeled that with a combination of boxmodeling and edge looping techniques and a nice reference image.  Oh, and edge looping!  Always important.  As for texturing, it was actually quite simple.  First I unwrapped the UV's on him, then using photoshop I rendered some clouds then used an overlay layer and found an image of some skin, then overlayed that, added some spots and some texture to them, etc.  I tend to use images to help me with my texturing.  It's very helpful.  Oh, and I have a bumpmap and specular map which can be very helpful.  Lastly, no name for this guy, maybe you could think of something  ;)
thecolclough:  haha, thanks.  Well, this model and its textures are very easily changeable.  I made the textures with extremely easily editable photoshop files where you can dump a color in a layer and it will change the skin color, or the spots color, or the teeth color or the gums color.  So any color scheme is really possible.

You can view my final post with all the information and downloads in this thread (http://anim8or.org/forums/index.php/topic,751.0.html)

And here's my final render for you all:

Hi "Tootsie" nice to meet you, you're looking swell today  ;D

now which photoshop are you using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop CS3. Also I am wondering if Gimp can do exactly what you just said you did for your texture.

I used Photoshop Elements, it came with my tablet.  I believe it should be pretty easily possible with Gimp to do that with the textures.  You just need to be able to use blending groups (and grouping would be useful, but that's only if you wanted to have easily editable color schemes.)

Well, digging this up, but I realized I never actually posted this render.
I created this for the new and improved:
CG-Nation! (http://www.CG-nation.com)
Earlier it was on the front page and made nice and pretty by TheProducer, but here's what I can show you now.  I'm working on some other renders for other pages on CG-nation.

Thanks Almost Cool.
Yes, he's the mascot of the CG-nation forum now.  He's called "Grunk" for now.

Congrats on winning the competition !

I liked Grunk (whatever that means, if anything) from the beginning  :)

i think it suits him.  i'm wondering, is that red box significant, or is it just something for him to stand on?

Obviously, it's "the perfect" cube primitive!

...Kind of reminds me of those creatures from the Stephen King story "The Langoliers" or the movie "Critters". ...only friendlier!

Well cg nation struck it rich. Now first thing they see is the skill and delicate rewarding work that animators face.

Im glad this came from anim8or.makes me proud to use it,no, to be a part of it is more accurate.  :)

Thanks guys, if I get any time between soccer preseason and work I want to squeeze out some new renders.

lynn: Thanks!  That does mean something :)

thecolclough:  No real significance.  I just had that image in my head really.  I always felt a nice perspective angle looking up and a leg up on something looked epic.  Perhaps a bit like an explorer on a ship looking ahead from the front of the ship.  A bit like the way CGN is a new exciting land, and grunk is admiring his new domain ;)  That last part I made up on the spot, though perhaps it was somewhere there all along.
Or what Rudy said...
5L1D3R:  Never read that!  Perhaps if I sharpened the teeth we could change the 'friendlier' part ;)
