Title: "An8-Chan" side project
Post by: fromsoysauce on November 20, 2016, 05:55:31 pm
Hey there, everyone! My youtube fans have been wanting me to get back into making an8 tutorials, but I've been hesitant to do it because I wanted to do it with some good fun production value.

An idea that's been floating around in my head is to have the tutorials actually feature a fully animated cute character that just flies in from time to time to give the whole series a more episodic show and pseudo story and not simply a tutorial series.

Of course, if you remember me, you also remember that I specialize in making "anime girls" So I was thinking of translating Steve's Robin into the design of cute and quirky anime girl "An8-Chan".

If you have any suggestions for design elements that you think would work well for the character let me know. Or if you think this idea is just silly weeb trash, feel free to let me know that too.

This idea certainly isn't trash.  I'm not really into anime and I can't offer any ideas design-wise, but as an admirer of your consistently awesome work I'm honestly looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Sounds good. Hope i will be able to follow. Another admirer of your design style here.

Ditto.
Always enjoy your anime stuff, and you're really good at it.
It would indeed be interesting to see what you do with robin. (http://s6.postimg.org/p4cqdev8d/grysmile.gif)

Oh yea?

And what if I decided to actually just go and make "Anim8or the Anime" which is an episodic story that revolves around An8-chan the robin, who is a stand-in for the viewer, as she learns the ins and outs of the program.

So an episodic story that doubles as an in-depth series of tutorials.

i'd watch that =]

It'd be fun to write for and animate.

It would, however be quite an ambitious project. I might try setting up a Patreon for it.

Careful with those ins and outs:

@nemyax  that's funny!

I also had the idea recently of if An8-chan changes a little with every episode. Since she is a stand in for the viewer, that represents the hypothetical viewer getting better at the program.

Sounds like a fun little project, I suppose people could drop their own variations on what she should look like into a thread and you can judge which one you'd like to use as a base design. Maybe have a low poly version to start and have her become a slightly more detailed and higher resolution model as the episodes progress, or just have different models of her made by different people.

Say- at first I was just thinking of best ways to work of the anim8or robin. At first I thought maybe trying to with some kind of thing that just worked off the pallet, but dressing a girl in red and yellow doesn't exactly lock-on to anim8or.

So I've been thinking- what if she has bird features built into her design? I.E. the anim8or.exe icon features tallons, so what if she had yellow talons for feet yellow scales at the lower segments of her legs?

Yeah, I meant more the character design aspect. Tutorials are best left to people who know exactly what they're doing. XP

The best bet is to start as simple as possible maybe use a base color like the gray user interface color for a simple outfit and then start adding features based on UI elements and such that way you can try  a part see how it looks and keep or disgardbased on how weel they match. Maybe hair can be red (possibly "feathered") with yellow accents rather than it being her clothing colors, otherwise she'd probably end up looking too much like the Chinese flag.

Yeah, to incorporate robin INTO an evolving anime character, with humanoid characteristics, could be quite challenging. (but am sure you could do it)

What about, maybe,  "An8-Chan" as a "cute and quirky anime girl", somehow really "anim8orish" (?), and with a sidekick, Robin. (maybe made in your own anime style?) (2 characters) ?
Robin could do all sorts of helpfull things for An8-Chan...... and vice versa.  ;)

I actually really like the Chinese flag. Using red and yellow feathers is a good idea! It's going to be a challenge, but I really hope that I can wind up with a design that anyone on this forum can take one look at and recognize as being an interpretation of Steve's Robin.

I was actually playing with the idea of unusual skin color to get more of that effect. I find that giving her yellow skin (though not as solid bright yellow as in the icon) and red hair does a lot to home in on the robin identity. (yellow skin and red hair, as in similar to SunsetShimmer in that regard).

I was playing with the concept of yellow tail feathers (since that's a part of the robin Icon) and I found myself extrapolating that to a pattern of feathers which basically formed a cute skirt. --- From there curiosity drove me to see how it would look if I went with that feathery structure till it wholly resembled a light dress.  I think that's what I'll go with rather than having her actually dress up.

That plus 3 clawed hands, as well as 3 clawed digigrade legs comes together with making her look like a little red siren.

I am not sure if she should have wings or not, and if so, if they should be part of her arms, or extra limbs, and if they are limbs if they should extend from her upper or lower back.

I now have enough of her modeled out that I can take a coherent WIP screen.
She's got the same red and yellow coloring as Steve's Robin, but for the sake of balance, the pale blue that anim8or uses for the back-drop fills in as a third color.

I wanted to play around with the idea of feathers, since I don't have any feathery characters in my games. So her hair was designed to look as if it is feathers as well as the red on her body forming what appears to be a dress of feathers. Finally she has 3 feathered winglets for ears, which of course are analogous to Steve's Robin's winglets. 3 Turned out to be a bit of a fractal for her too, since she also has 3 digits on each appendage.

Do keep in mind that this is just a WIP, and that the final one will have proper detail where it deserves to be to amount to much better form (not to mention actual texture maps)

Glad you like it, Steve.

I must confess, I don't think that I myself had actually ran through the Robin Tutorial myself when I started anim8or, so technically this is my first attempt at rendering the character.

It would be pretty unfortunate to make an interpretation of someone else's character, that the original creator didn't like- I've been down that road before, not fun-

This however, I'm confident, will wind up being quite adorable in the end!
--Edit---
Added detail to the forms of the accessories!

Hey, as far as I'm concerned, anyone can interpret Robin as they please. I like your human+animal interpretation. Her dress has such a good feel of feathers.

While I like the idea that was previously piched about having a lower res character increase in polycount with each episode. I ultimately realized that that would be a lot of work to have to redo the 40 face blend shapes every single time.

So instead I'm thinking of just basically making her start out as a child that simply gets older each episode. This would be done just by scrubbing through blend shapes- really.

Here is a picture of An8-chan in child form~

Not yet textured, but fully weight painted!

Seeing her like this, I kinda feel like adding wings to her design, no matter the configuration would just make the design too busy- thoughts?

i'd say make a backup and then give it a shot - worst that can happen is it doesn't work out and you take them off again.  you don't know until you try it...

I tried the wings, it didn't turn out too well-- but on the bright side, I gave her scales!

That is indeed a nice touch!  Looks like you've got her well rigged.  The tail feathers add a lot to her expression, too.

People are messaging me on other sites explaining:

"Anim8or's mascot has never looked so sexy!"
and
"Now Robin is a sexy gal, that's a very cool char design :)"

Now at the moment- I have to take a moment to rerig her (since I did learn a few things about rigging when I made her adorable, slender, digitigrade legs as well as that cute fan of feathers that make up her little tail). But I am very very happy with the way things came out. It's a simple design which is pretty much characteristic of my signature in design philosophy, but at the same time there are a number of interesting traits she has, here's the run down: Red, Yellow, Blue, the primary colors of paint, incorporating her source material as a bird in the form of a pretty dress of red feathers, a fairly unique hair style, four three-fingered claws. Fantacy ears, and that fanning tail.

Maybe it's just me- but as I was posing/animating her I couldn't help but feel like she's drawn in a way that coincidentally (or perhaps subconsciously) is comparable with the art style used in some of the promo-art in the Shantae Pirate's Curse by Way Forward.

It got me starting to think of the possibility of making a video game around Robin (yes I do still intend to have her appear in the tutorial vids I will make on youtube) but I'm talking about an actual action adventure game.

Primarily I'd like to explore her as a character by way of the above mentioned traits in her design. But bonus points if I could see to it to add some level of puzzle challenges which call back to some of the features in Anim8or that it does particularly well.

An example off the top of my head. My personal favorite tool in anim8or is the cut-edge tool, as it is handled in a way that is far easier to execute in Anim8or than more complicated programs. So what if she would have an ability that let her cut the edges into certain surfaces, and she did it with her talons. I am not sure what kind of effect that could have on gameplay, but I'm sure I could come up with something.

What do y'all think?

This is definitely a great idea, not trash at all. Whatever you do just try not to over sexualize your anime character. I've noticed this is a huge factor in most anime figures and it gets kinda monotonous. Fun and quirky will do just fine. All the best.

Character sexualization is actually one of those things that go over my head. Being the asexual girl I am, the very idea of a character or person being "sexually attractive" is very strange to me. I do remember having heard that some characters are societal deemed "sexy" that I can't see as all that interesting aesthetically. Like Bayonetta. She sorta just looks like an awkward giraffe with guns to me.

Despite that though, I have been told in the past that that some people even describe my own characters as sexy:
https://scontent-mia1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/p960x960/16722735_10212215115113018_8996116193256931117_o.jpg?oh=b0c8280ead6c6c732be307f033bf47b7&oe=5903513F
or
[/youtube]

Though in reality, as a girl game developer, when I create character designs, I tend to feel most satisfied with designs that look like things I think would be fun if that were what I looked like walking in public confidently. (of course, that's putting aside fantasy things like crystal wings and bird talons)

Aww thanks, V! But what I can do now is just the result of analyzing Nintendo's 3D models and practicing.

I'd do offer personal lessons for 3D modeling and game making if you are interested in my techniques. My student's seem to appreciate my lessons enough to refer to me as "Sayuri-sensei", which is something they came up with, not me.

As mentioned earlier in the topic though, I do have plans to make a Patreon powered animated show which doubles as some solid lessons on making models with anim8or. So if you have any ideas for topics you might want to be covered in that show, feel free to shoot ideas.

I can see why you would say that. While not that game, there was an JRPG I fondly remember enjoying as a kid called Xenosaga:
http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/xenosaga/images/6/65/Image91q19.png/revision/latest?cb=20141027001944

Here, however, is a figure showing my style in the form of a timeline:

2007-2012 I was in a phase where I didn't know what I was doing, so I tried to emulate animu. You can tell that it's falls short of that. 2014-early 2015 I tried to create my own style distanced from animu. People told me that they didn't like the direction I was going, so I gave my fans polls, and with their suggestions, winded up combining elements of My Little Pony and The Spectacular Spiderman, and suddenly I had found a definitive style that worked exceptionally well for me.

Sooo I am going to be updating the model for Robin in that I will make her scales actually modeled into her legs and arms instead of just textured.
