Title: connecting a point to an edge, removing points

Is it possible to connect a point to an edge creating two edges?  And Is it possible to remove points without losing an edge?

Yes, select the edge, then do a shift/Z to cut the edge this will give you another point

Yes again, move the point you wish to remove very close to an existing point, then do a shift/L and type in an appropriate number for the tolerance (default 0.50) and it will merge the two points together. If it does not, either move the point closer or use a higher number.
