Title: A Transparent Problem
Post by: argo34116 on November 17, 2015, 04:05:42 pm
I have this model of the type 9 shuttle from star trek. It looks ok in Anim8or, but there is a section (See images- I have highlighted the section of the model in question) that is transparent when I place it in Celestia. You can see stars and even the warp nacelle beneath it if you rotate the model. The section in question is solid and colored grey-white in Anim8or, but it is black and transparent in Celestia. The rest of it is ok, except for that one section on both sides. I have included the Anim8or and the textures here.

The model has some of its faces flipped, showing the "back side" when it should be showing the "front side". In Anim8or and most 3D software, the direction of the face is called a normal. Most games implement back-face culling to enhance performance, which means that the back of faces aren't rendered. Anim8or by default has back-face culling disabled which is why you can still see them in Anim8or. So to fix it you need to select all of the flipped faces and then flip them.
Note: You can, after #2, select all the meshes and go to Edit->Fix Normals (X) to have Anim8or try and make all the normals face the same direction. This will work in most cases, but you should inspect the model afterwards to see if Anim8or missed anything.

Thank you. Flipping normals as indicated did the trick. Thank you for the help. sorry I was not able to get back here sooner to report the success, but we were in the middle of a long and traumatic move. Our living situation is still not stable.
