Yep, it's a glass cross...any comments?
-
nice! what raytrace mode you has use?
-
There doesn't appear to be any refraction happening, which makes the cross appear hollow and thin-skinned, kinda like a soap bubble (which is fine if that's the look you were going for). Any chance of an ART render with refraction/dialetrics?
-
I really need to learn to look more carefully at things before I post--I didn't notice that there is a problem with the background image.
I used the scanline renderer, so no, there is no refraction. I wanted the dielectric glass look that you can get with ART, but I like the way scanline handles environment maps and anti-aliasing. Also, I think I would have prefered ambient occlusion rather than raytraced shadows. Maybe I can make a composite to get the best features of Art and scanline. Thanks for the comments. I was expecting someone to ask, "What's keeping the cross from falling over?" or, "What is that surface underneath supposed to be?"

Hello ronaldefarmer,
I like it. (http://s6.postimg.org/p4cqdev8d/grysmile.gif)
Was wondering, What's keeping the cross from falling over?, and also, What is that surface underneath supposed to be?.. (http://s6.postimg.org/4y98eizkt/grywink.gif)

Good point, Johnar. It does need something to keep it from falling over. I still don't know about the surface.
This one is rendered in ART. Did you know that environment maps don't work on dielectric materials? I had to copy and paste the cross with a different material to get the environment map in combination with refraction.

Ambient occlusion instead of shadows--which looks best?
-
Ambient occlusion looks better. Colors are much more pronounced/bright/deep-glassy......
Nice to have some type of shadow, but if it came to a choice, the bottom pic has a more 'glamorous' appeal about it. :).
-
I think I'm through with it. What do you think?
-
That final render looks awesome.
Nice background, nice tabletop, good shadow and excellent reflection(s).
I like the final glass color. Looks 'bottle-ish', which makes me think something could be inside it..... but i understand what it feels like to 'finish up and move on'.......
All in All, well done Ron. Looks great. (http://s24.postimg.org/o4uvmxwjl/Thumbs_Up_G1.gif)

Thanks for the kind words, Johnar. Something could be inside it? ...Like what?
-
WOW! How did you model it? Really cool, that final render is pristine!
-
Hi Davdud101,
Thanks! I modeled it more or less like this:
-
Something could be inside it? ...Like what?
Actually, it looks very cool 'as it is', but, since you asked.(http://s8.postimg.org/j64xwcx9d/Big_Grin_Gry.gif)
Could be......liquid......bubbles.......goldfish....internal fire.......spider(s)...dirt and small tree.....vines with leaves/(thorns?).....smaller cross hanging on chain....little man sitting in the bottom, looking 'trapped in religon', or maybe 'looking for answers'....snow/rain.... a head in the top, hands(upturned?) in the sides and legs in the bottom.....doves(peace)....lava lamp .... light bulb......insects....terrairium....blue air and clouds.....flowers....candle wick/flame(s)....hour glass sand.......space/planets/stars.....................
.....But then, as i said b4, it's awesome as it is, it doesn't actually 'need' anything.
Can it be 'expanded upon?,beautified?, redirected?, embellished somehow?'......hmmmmm...... if you can 'see' something , then maybe...
warning
It has already reached the point of being an 'Excellent, finished image', and attempts at anything i've mentioned, could easily become a frustrating waste of time..lol (http://s6.postimg.org/4y98eizkt/grywink.gif)

+1 johnar

So, I put something in the glass cross:
I don't think I like it though.
-
Mmm, interesting idea, but I think I agree. What about something else, like "Hope," "Salvation," "Faith," or "Love?"
-
Hi RudySchneider,
That would probably be a better sort of message. I can easily change the message just by editing the texture for the note's material. Mostly, I just think the note in the bottle is a distraction and that it detracts from the depth and "glassiness" of the image. Your comments reminded me of something I did a while back for a webpage:
Again, I'm not sure what keeps these crosses from falling over or what the surface beneath is supposed to be--not a well developed design. Also, there is no refraction since I did this in version 0.95 before Steve gave us the ray tracer.
-
cool!
-
Looks nice, definitely like the version without the message, since as you said it detracts a bit from the glass itself. Perhaps, you can emboss a message instead on the metal holder or give it a little placard attachment.
-
It does distract from the original image. I agree. If you are still inclined to put something in the bottle, maybe a string of 'prayer beads?' hanging inside, would be less intrusive to the main image.... or... maybe i should just 'leave well alone'....lol
...sorry Ron..... (http://s13.postimg.org/668ay1knn/blush1gry.gif)

Looks awesome.
