Title: Diversions
Post by: johnar on December 23, 2014, 12:27:02 am
 Need the occasional Diversion when 'Deeper' needs a break.
 Have had animation and animated gifs on my mind today, and christmas pressys, so put this together this afternoon.
 Froyds Xmas gift from hell. (https://s6.postimg.org/vid36dwgx/Smile_Blnkgry.gif)
(https://s6.postimg.org/ec4udg80x/Froyds_Pres.gif)
 I don't know whats in the box, but it doesn't like to be moved.
 Takes more than a stubborn xmas gift to upset Froyd tho. (https://s6.postimg.org/y2drxlqch/Winkgrey.gif/img]
[img]http://s12.postimg.org/8pv1fp6tp/Froyds_Pres.gif)
 Could go over it a few more times, but had enough for now. Was just a diversion..

Diverted again.(https://s6.postimg.org/gxw0bk1i9/Rolleyesgrey.gif)
 Most of you have probably met this character. He's gone under a few aliases, but his actual name is Stuart Pidity. Or Stu..(Stu-Pidity).
(http://s2.postimg.org/br7broxrd/3facesb.gif)
He's been my main man for some time now. (and Froyd, of course.)
  Time to add morphs to my latest character. (below right)
(http://s30.postimg.org/455w0tt29/stunstroyd.gif)
 Stu has 24 face morphs, so i'm trying for at least that with this bloke.
 Will update every time he has a few more than he has now. (currently 2, Leyeshut and Reyeshut)

16 morphs so far, but 11 of those are eyes and eyebrows.
 (Will get some tweaking. Tongue mostly)

 His shades are '1 size fits all'. (9 morphs)  :)

 Moving on...
Anim8or uses forward kinetics, (FK) everybody wants Inverse kinetics (IK), and the fact of the matter is, they both have their uses, advantages and disadvantages over each other.
 Some more professional software has both IK and FK, and many professional animators prefer to have both.
 Search engines full of IK/FK discussion.
http://forums.cgsociety.org/archive/index.php?t-1300798.html
http://softimage.wiki.softimage.com/xsidocs/ik_AnimatingwithForwardKinematics.htm
 Anim8or has a good FK animation system.
 The trick can be in the keying.

A not so good example:
Simple keying like this::
(http://i68.tinypic.com/5owll3.gif)
gives results like this:
(http://i65.tinypic.com/9iegt1.gif)
 but change the keys positions:
(http://i68.tinypic.com/2zio5z7.gif)
 and you get more like this:
(http://i68.tinypic.com/v6mbrq.gif)
 They're the same value and type of keys, but just placed differently.
 Can you see the difference?. Its very subtle, but it defineatly has a more fluid motion?
 I need lots and lots and lots more learning and practice.(https://s6.postimg.org/gxw0bk1i9/Rolleyesgrey.gif) (https://s6.postimg.org/vid36dwgx/Smile_Blnkgry.gif)

Nice work johnar, as usual (http://s6.postimg.org/p4cqdev8d/grysmile.gif).

This is a cool little lesson in animation. The slight lag between when the upper arms accelerate and the lower arms and hands react in the second example looks more relaxed or "natural" because that is how animals usually move.

Anim8or has a good FK animation system.
No it doesn't. "Can set and edit rotation keys" is not enough to qualify for good FK. You don't get a choice between Eulers and quaternions, you don't get constraints, bone translation or variable-length keyframe handles—you don't get much of anything at the stage that Anim8or is at now.

Room for improvement, but good enough to experiment and learn the basics of keyframing, timing, etc. (https://s6.postimg.org/c5vuaz2jl/Winkwhite.gif)

Have been away for a while, finally able to spend more time with anim8or, and the progressing IK.
 I looked around a bit for some decent humanoid joint limits, decided to just make my own, suitable for anim8or.
 These limits, below, are working out pretty well so far for Froyds rig, but may need tweaking for other rigs. (?).
 Help yourself.

the other thing that would be interesting to know is, where have you used IK chains within that rig?  is it just one for each limb, or is it a more complex setup?
Title: Re: Diversions
Post by: johnar on September 20, 2016, 05:41:20 am
Thanks for replies and comments.
 The joint limits i've posted are still not necessarilly the final settings, but so far is behaving pretty well with froyd.

Quote
http://where have you used IK chains within that rig?  is it just one for each limb, or is it a more complex setup?

 So far, its only 2 bones per IK chain.
 On both sides its:
 Shoulder -> Bicep
 bicep -> forearm.
 Thigh -> shin.
 Heel -> toe.
 I've left the wrist and fingers FK, and the neck as well.
 Its probably far from the 'correct' way of doing it, but so far am getting results.
 Feel more comfortable dragging the arm in to position with IK, then animating hands and wrist FK. (i can use sequences i already have for animating FK hands, and positioning the arm, IK,  before positioning the wrist is seeming a more exact way of getting the final pose.
 I'm treating legs the same. Dragging the leg from bottom of shin bone, IK, and then final positioning of heel and toes, although i'm using IK, heel -> toes, for final position of feet.
 Its a work in progress.
 Was having trouble with longer IK chains, crashing, but now realise that was more the 'what i was doing', rather than an anim8or problem. So will go for longer chains in the future, as i get more used to the idea of how it all happens.
 Thanks for asking. Happy to share, at risk of ridicule. Lol. (https://s6.postimg.org/c5vuaz2jl/Winkwhite.gif)

I haven't worked with Anim8or's IK (yet!) but I have worked with it in Carrara many times.  I think your method is spot on johnar, effectively setting the wrist joint as the IK terminator.  Anything you need full control over, such as hand position and finger joint angles, should be left FK.  It might help to think of it like the way you think of using your hand to, say, grab a glass of water.  You think about moving your hand to the right location and angle to grasp the glass, you don't think about angling your shoulder and elbow to position the hand correctly (that would be FK).  Conversely, you don't think about moving your fingertips to the correct location, they are only moved once the hand is in place.  Therefore the hand (or more precisely the wrist joint) would be the ideal IK terminator.

Nice work on IK'ing Froyd, johnar!  I'm looking forward to having a play with Anim8or's IK, it's one of the things that's been on my 'wish list' for as long as I've been working with Anim8or :)

I had an IK chain with 8 bones for a tail. It crashed a couple of times, but then Steve told me he figured what the problem was. Fortunately, he'll fix this problem.
I'm waiting for the next build. Hopefully, we would use IK&FK :)

It's encouraging, and a relief, to hear that i am actually on the right track.

 Yes, IK in Anim8or has been on many wishlists, i'm sure. And mine as well.
 Now that it's happening, it's really quite magic.
 Must be a ton of work for our one-man band, Steve, the magician.
 You really must try it when you can. I'm sure feedback to steve, from someone like yourself who is familiar with IK, would be extremely helpfull in the planning and progress of anim8ors IK system.
  I must say, so far it's coming along quite magnificently. Potentially, absolutely top notch.
  Cheers ENSONIQ5. Good to hear from you.  :)

daniel99: thanks for that. Good to hear.  :)

bicep -> forearm.
Thigh -> shin.
Heel -> toe.
I've left the wrist and fingers FK, and the neck as well.

not quite what i expected - i'm half-way through building my own IK test skeleton (borrowing Froyd's joint limits btw, thanks for sharing those!), and i was planning to do it with one IK chain from shoulder to wrist and one from hip to ankle, at least initially, and see how that worked.  now i think about it, though, i can see why you'd want the extra control at elbow and knee... maybe once the system is fully implemented it'll be possible to work with a single chain per limb and then fine-tune elbows and knees in mid-chain, but for the time being your approach does make sense =]

 With build 1250 and the new quick keying functions, IK has just got a whole lot easier to animate with.
 Heres froyd with his bits showing, giving his limits a stretch.
(http://s17.postimg.org/n67m5xqcv/Gif07.gif)

 Although the limits are still working well, you do still need to be a bit carefull. He can put his hand INTO his chest, but then, so could we, if our chest wasn't in the way. ;)

 The seas in Deeper will most probably remain stagnent for a little while longer, tho who knows when inspiration might strike. I'm still modelling, slowly, sea creatures. And getting the underground aliens ready for action.
 But for now, i'm hooked on the progressing IK

 Just wanted to say, i've updated the joint limits.
 Theres no big differences, in fact, only one maybe 2 small changes, which now i can't even remember what they were... ::) .. But, i have made the values a bit less haphazard on the pic, and therefor, easier to read. (and refer to, if you're using the picture itself as reference)
(which i was doing, when i realised that it needed straightening up a bit, in places) :)

 Have given the wrists more turn on the y axis. the bicep more movement on the z, and upper, middle and lower spine all have a few extra degrees of movement on the x.

 Some things i spend a little time on, then basically just throw away.
(as we've all done, i'm sure).  ;)
 Last couple of nights i've been playing round with this.... nearly made it to the bin, but what the heck.....

 Yes indeed, a 'Froydian slip'. (https://s6.postimg.org/8anuunu01/biggrinn_W.gif)
 He may not be the sharpest crayon in the box, but you've gotta give him points for trying. (https://s6.postimg.org/62e9r2c9t/Smilewhite.gif)

How about a 'Froydian 'slide'?

Froyd has certainly been working on expanding his territory, besides his gymnastics.

 True. :)
 Some kind of 'infinite ground grid' could be pretty cool. Haven't  tested the limits of adding more and more 'ground grid objects', yet......

 But just lately he's been staying more in the one spot ...

Hi neirao  :)
 Thanks.

 I think a lot of the places where it says "image not found or was removed" come from missing 'emotogifs', like these: (https://s6.postimg.org/u5ve4hz1d/biggrinngry.gif)(http://s24.postimg.org/cn9xhqr5t/SSG03_G.gif)(https://s6.postimg.org/gxw0bk1i9/Rolleyesgrey.gif)(https://s6.postimg.org/vid36dwgx/Smile_Blnkgry.gif)

 There were a lot that went missing over time, so i uploaded them all again, and now they have different urls' (addresses)
 I made a mistake and deleted all the remaining ones before uploading the fresh lot, so maybe thats why.
Anyway, i'll go through now and update these pages.
 Thanks. (https://s6.postimg.org/vid36dwgx/Smile_Blnkgry.gif)

 EDIT. Have updated emotogif links. There are some animations missing, will try replacing them shortly........

EDIT 2: I've attached the new emotogifs and links, just in case anybody wants them.

Thanks all for your encouraging comments, and intresting suggestions and ideas.
  My delayed response is due to  making a video "reply?", which is taking way longer than anticipated, because of 'other life stuff' getting in the way.
 Turning off the phone and hibernating here for the winter is fast becoming my favorite option at the moment.......(https://s6.postimg.org/y2drxlqch/Winkgrey.gif)
