I am considering the possibility of installing VirtualBox and Windows 8.1 on a Mac for the purpose of running Anim8or and a few other indispensable Windows-only graphics programs. Does anyone have any thoughts on the advisability of this proposition?

I don't have any personal experience with it, but I've always heard of people using BootCamp or Parallels with software and games and having no issues whatsoever. It's basically as if you had Windows on a separate partition, and just happened to be able to run Windows like normal from within MacOS. There should be no problems so long as the windows install has proper graphics drivers installed, and your hardware is fairly modern.

Thanks for the advice Raxx,
Anim8or does run on Windows 8.1 in VirtualBox, but the performance is somewhat limited due to sharing of system resources, etc. I might try Parallels at some point in the future but for now I have set up a dual-boot configuration with Bootcamp. The trouble with this solution is that I won't be able to switch between Windows and Mac applications without rebooting. I wish there was a way to actually port Anim8or to Mac. A few years ago, I managed to run Anim8or in Ubuntu using Wine. I thought that it might also work on the Mac, but no luck; Anim8or starts, but then crashes immediately.

Just in case anyone is wondering about running Anim8or and other windows applications on Mac,it seems that Parallels is the way to go--much better than VirtualBox, but still not as good as Bootcamp.
