Hello
Please find a an8 file for a compound microscope.
It has an eyepiece and and objective - both made from a pair of lenses.
The scene has a morph that slides the objective towards the eyepiece.
All you have to do is change the 'lens" material to reflect your choice of refractive index. Go to scene mode, choose view camera and render it.
Feedback appreciated.

Here are some tests made in another render with the same mesh.
The magnification changes as the objective lense set moves towards the viewer.

thanks xalener! I think the possibilites are endless. With reflection etc you could so amazing animation. A kaleidoscope does come to mind.

Nice! Great idea.
I had in mind rendering a lens, but not an entire microscope. Have you tried to add more detail to the lens by the means of subdivision? I think the microscope will distort less the image when the number of faces increases on approach to an spherical surface of a real lens.

Good idea on the subdivision
Above image is the lens I used, which is subdivided, but flattening one end has given it a less than spherical shape! So maybe that is the wierd distortion?
In real optics I think the bend would actually go the other way to reduce spherical abberation!

I have also spent some time playing with lens effects using ART renderer and here is the best solution I found to get rid of the distortions:
Make the mesh as simple as possible and let the subdivision algorithm do make a smooth surface. Create a cube, convert it to subdivided and scale it non-uniformly to get the lens shape you want... don't forget to set enough divisions to the mesh and a it's done!
I love this microscope idea by the way...
