Title: Animating a Picture
Post by: Spartan396 on April 01, 2008, 09:36:55 pm
Hello again :)

I know I have another thread, but I am eager to learn. That and I didn't find a tutorial for this particular subject.

OK, my problem: There is a picture I would like to make a 3D sort of render for. I would like to know if it is possible to take a 2D picture, edit a bit, and make a 3D picture out of it that I can rotate, etc. and put into a movie. If so, I'd like it if someone were so kind as to give me an easy to follow set of directions.
The image:

If there already is a thread/tutorial that I didn't see before, please send me in that direction.
Sorry for the hassle and thanks for the help,

you could import that picture as a reference and trace along the lines with the spline tool, then extrude to make it raised, then you would have a 3d sysmbol.
so, this is from halo, right?

I will have to experiment a bit before I can answer with any certainty.  One possibility would be to trace the image into a vector file, manually if necessary in something like Illustrator or Corel, or use an automatic trace utility to create a vector image from the original bitmap.  Saving this vector as, for instance, a DXF file, then using a freeware converter to convert it into a format that can be imported into Anim8or, like lwo, you should be able to get a spline into Anim8or in the shape of the logo.  Join the splines and extrude.  If you don't have a trace utility we can sort out something whereby you email me the bitmap (under 1MB) and I return a vector image, using Corel Trace.  I'll play with the concept and see if it works.

It's definitely possible.  First, I'm wondering if you plan to make this fully 3d, or do you want it to be a simple extrusion?  A simple extrusion is easy as you can just trace the image with the spline tool, join all the splines you drew then extrude.  If you want this fully 3d with a sphere of a globe, etc.  that requires more skill of course.  Skill comes with practice, and the best way to start practicing is reading the manual and following tutorials which you can find on anim8or.com and google.

if you wanted to attach it to some sort of 3D shape, you may have to get a UV mapping tool.Possibly. But what do I know,anim8or might have a tool 4 that.:-[
