Hi Gang
I am trying to create some nifty shapes for electric guitar models. I am using splines to creat the shapes. When I FILL or JOIN SPLINES, I get these lines that make it a pain to do any extruding. Why is that?

That is the standard tessellation that happens when you fill a spline. Basically it triangulates the mesh, one of the downfalls of automation. If you need to work on the mesh, you can select all the faces and press shift+m to merge them, but since parts of it is concave you'll have to use the knife tool to fix the areas where the faces overlap the edges.
Alternatively, if you want a nice array of faces and edges to work with, you could just create a general shape with polygons using the Add Edge tool and fill holes, and then convert it to subdivided, like in the attached image.
