Title: dragon
Post by: baxter on March 30, 2008, 12:41:55 pm
hello all

I havent been on the forums for a very long time now since the switch to this new forum. (it takes like 5 minutes for the forum to load up :P )

so I decided to wait and when it loaded up decided to post my most recent creation

(http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/3521/dragonfinalfightableca3.jpg)

A dragon made for the game Alatheya ( www.Alatheya.com (http://www.Alatheya.com) )

hopefully it'll be textured soon so I can post an update :)

critics welcome

It looks good, I liek the tail. But at the front (Chest Area). It looks a little too flat, only a little bit. It looks very good. Can't wait to see it textured. One question, how long did it take you to model this dragon?

yeah, the front is a little wierd, so is the head as it dosn't seem to have a mouth. also there are a lot of 5 sided polygons.

it has a mouth you just cant see it at that angle :P

yea the front has been bugging me too im trying to get that fixed but ive mostly been trying to perfect the joint area

and it took me roughly 1-2 hours to make the first version which eventually changed into this version

That looks like a very good start to the dragon.  The front, as people have said is a bit strange.  I believe it's because of the circle that the mesh seems to come in on.  Instead I'd just try to make it flow through like any other part of the mesh.  I'm assuming this is lowpoly since it's for a game, and I feel that you can definitely get rid of some polygons especially around the legs and wings.  I'm not sure how big this will be in the game though, or how close you'll get to it, so I can't say for sure.  Also, I guess most people simplify the mesh in the end, so I can't judge too soon ;)
Good start though, it looks like a good model so far.

That is really good! Although, I'm not to sure about the legs or the wings
Have you thought of making the front bit an emblem instead of fixing it

it needs some long, sharp teeth, and i'll add my voice to the movement saying the front circle is weird, but otherwise i like it!  also guessing you're going to put some membranes between the wing spike things?  anyway, i'd love to see a textured and subdivided version!

this not going to be subdivided and I have made a textured version now

the texture is still a WIP I really dont like the quality of it but its a start

and Ill get to work on the front area right now :)

http://baxter500.deviantart.com/art/updated-mar-30-dragon-texture-81456843 (http://baxter500.deviantart.com/art/updated-mar-30-dragon-texture-81456843)

and due to the overly used flying dragon, this dragon will be flightless, with this breed of dragon they were born without wing membranes possibly due to the radiation emissions from the space miners crashed ship and they had to learn to survive without flying thus relying on brute strength which in turn, makes them harder to kill than other dragons ;D

the only problem i see is the odd circular area. otherwise, the textured version looks great

My criticism is it looks too 'real'. It really depends on the style of the rest of the game, but IMO dragons should look bright and a little cartoony. Yours is duller (colour-wise) than I imagined, with dinosaur patterns. The result is it looks far more like a dinosaur than a dragon: especially since it doesn't have wings. The dark shadow at the front also looks out of place.

So I think technically it is very well textured. It's just that the colours don't really make me think "OMG it's a dragon".

As dosser said, there seems to be a strangely gray textured section in the front of the body.  You'll want to look into getting rid of the seams there.
Other than that, it's tough to really crit the texture because the image is very small.  It seems like your main worry right now should be making the texture seamless.  I do agree with Dosser as well that the colors don't really make the dragon stand out much.  Perhaps add something a bit more stylized that stands out a bit more.  Making the textures edgier.  After that I'd advise you add a bumpmap and specular map to add realism as they normally do in games.
You're doing well so far though, keep it up.

nice dragon, never played the game myself, but i imagine that a more scaley reddy colour would look better, and if it were less cartoony than the rest of the game, wouldn't it be cool to say, OMG, that looks like a real dragon O_O

i don't really know, but it looks great at the moment

that is a very nice dragon. How exactly did you make it? what type of modeling method did you use?

woah, so many replies to answer :P

ok....

@bucketman717
the odd circular area will be fixed I just havent gotten to it yet :P

@Dosser
"Real" is what I was going for ;D

@hihosilver
grey section? I dont see grey anywhere on the dragon :P

@3D Joe Wiltshire
The game isnt even out yet :D and its going to be an MMORPG so models are supposed to look real ;D

@RnDr FOX
I used a cylinder and started shaping along the body of the dragon then made another cylinder for the head and attached it the body, then made another cylinder for a leg and made the leg then made 4 copies and altered the front ones a bit and attached them to the body ;D

hopefully I didnt miss anyone and thanks for all the feedback on this

also one more note- everyone was told to start recruiting so if anyone wants to join Team Augreal (the team thats making Alatheya) go to www.alatheya.com (http://www.alatheya.com) and use the contact form

we need 3d modelers
2d artists
writers
programmers
linguists
texturers
and some other jobs that I cant remember

be ready to provide an example of your work to Wolfb4ne(the Leader) so he can decide :D

great model :) everything's superb, apart from his feet ... They look rather robotic, as though they are made from metal ... but perhaps that was purposeful? :P Dragons, at the end of the day, are fantasy creatures and can be modelled anyway you like, i guess :P

yeah, nice work :)
that game thing sounds funkeey

You could add a crystal or something on the flat surface on the front :o

If u wanted to cut down on poly count u could make a wyvern(dragon where the wings replace the front feet)I guess that would cut down on the poly count in somewhat matter
