Post by: Raxx on June 09, 2013, 10:22:48 am
Creatures Cycling
Working Title

Welcome to the first of hopefully more than one Community Collaboration Challenge! The goal of these challenges is to spread the Anim8or name by completing polished art and then posting it on sites like DeviantArt, Youtube, CGSociety, or other channels and saying, "This was made entirely in Anim8or".

These are challenges where the entire Anim8or community collaborates to make a still render or animation based on a theme or idea. This first challenge will have a preset theme, but future themes can be decided on by the members who participated in the last one.

Rules

Current Theme: Creatures Cycling

Development Cycle (Current, Completed, Upcoming)

So that's it! We're now in the Modeling and texturing development cycle. First come, first serve! If a task isn't taken, post here to let us know that you're working on it. Then post your WIPs here. If you have any questions, ask away!

Modeling-Only Task List (Taken, Complete)

Note that modeling and texturing are two separate stages. Do not unwrap or texture anything, that's for later! Also, this list may be subject to change.

The Idea
The idea is to mimmick miniature photography (https://www.google.com/search?q=miniature+photography&safe=off&tbm=isch) using the diorama effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniature_faking). The subject will be a lizard and frog riding a tandem bicycle in a classic setting. There will be a 1950s-style house in the background with a 1950s car in the driveway. The lawn will have a few lawn ornaments in it. The lizard and frog will be riding by on their tandem bike, and will be the primary objects in focus.

Hello Raxx, neat idea, something that I like Collabaration!... I hav`nt really got into a concept drawing yet,but prefer to doodle about with anim8or, so here is my idea for an animal Could be nice and furry with Phur, like a mammoth! Done on my XP laptop whilst at work, will get back to it shortly when I`m home on the desktop.

Just a video for bicycle inspiration:

Will think about a creature for the bicycle. No good at drawing though, we'll see.

This looks the business....

Two animals on a bike .... does it have to be pedal powered? hmmm.

Elephants on bikes have been done before. How about a tandem bike specifically designed for, say, house pets?

Attached is an example of what I mean, though naturally the bike would need a bit of engineering work.

Well, the deadline has passed for the ideas phase, but it doesn't seem like there're enough concrete ideas to vote on (2-ish?). Would anyone like to share their opinions or new ideas before I put it up to vote?
Title: Re: CCC #1: Creatures Cycling
Post by: Raxx on June 28, 2013, 07:11:28 am
Ok, poll is open to vote on an idea. I added the idea of having a lizard and frog on a miniature tandem bike as well, since it'll be easier to model and pose rather than dealing with fur and complex engineering ;)

4 days to vote!
Title: Re: CCC #1: Creatures Cycling

I already submitted my vote. Would you like to know what my vote is?
Title: Re: CCC #1: Creatures Cycling
Post by: Raxx on July 02, 2013, 09:48:20 am
Ok, the poll is complete! The winner is the Lizard and frog on miniature tandem bike idea. I'm relieved it's not the house pets one ;)

Since the idea itself was pretty vague, I went ahead and put it in a specific setting. This may or may not be cool with everyone, so let me know if you had a different vision that you really liked. In the meantime, I added a task list to the first post that you guys can volunteer for on a first come, first serve basis. Each list and each sub-item is a separate task. The unwrapping and texturing will be done in a separate phase.

I will wait a few days before I volunteer for a task, so that you guys can pick out what you'd like to do first. There's no set deadline as of yet, but hopefully this can be done in a timely manner :)

Good luck to everyone who participates!

Judging by the <sarcasm>overwhelming</sarcasm> enthusiasm for this project, I'm going to go ahead and nab one of the tasks before they disappear :P

Frog, I choose you!

With collaborations, there usually is a pathos with anim8or users, only us diehards would condescend to take on something like this.

I`ll take the tandem as nobody else has elected to do so  ::)

Edit: If I have more time I`ll try some more models ( I would suggest models to go to a dropbox, as the norm is to post here and then all and sundry, collect the models without any participation )

Hello Raxx. sorry I don't have enough time to get involved, I have overstretched my already overstretchynedness stretchtedness... just wanted to say I am lurking

You're doing great work. I'm amazed there's not more anim8or users! It needs a school teacher or two with a classroom full of anim8ors to flood you. Be careful :)

Post by: Raxx on July 06, 2013, 06:56:20 am
I fully expected this type of involvement to happen, but couldn't resist poking at the community in my last post ;)

Kreator, glad you're on board! I'm participating with the full intention of sharing the files I make with the community, as forum attachments. While I'm not all that big on releasing my models to the internets, I think other users could learn from the files and resources that we share here. If you could do the same, kudos to you. Do whatever you're most comfortable with though, I'll respect your decision.

headwax, no problem, I'm sure we all understand. I'm quite busy with other projects as well, and this community challenge doesn't bring home any bacon ;) There isn't a deadline set for this challenge, so hopefully people can participate when they find the time. Thanks for posting though!

Had trouble sleeping so I got up early and did an hour of modeling. I'm also recording the process, so hopefully when it's complete I'll have a youtube link to share.

Heh nice progress guys.. don't worry about the participation so far - it's not a huge project (on purpose im sure ;) )

I'll pick up modeling the car.. a nice alternation for making organics models lately

watch out though, it might turn up more detailed than planned haha..

$imon, it'll be spectacular to have one of your cars in the scene. Put in as much detail as you want ;)

captaindrewi, great! Since the placement of the poles will be handled later, try to make the wires easy enough to change around, if you could. Thanks!

Tandem in Progress, But need to get my old bike out to take some photos of the brakes, pedals and spoke arrangement on the hubs. wheels are just testing dummies until I find out how they are configured.

Should have it finished soon, I take it I do not rig it in any way, its hard not to!

update:Revised tandem 09 July :
Revised tandem 10 July : Chain added But forgot the double Clanger on the rear! so another bit to add, Shimano gears on rear.

Nice job captaindrewi, look like telephone poles to me. What do you think about adding the metal step things on the trunk of the pole (like this (http://thumbs2.picclick.com/d/w500/pict/310695878509_/Lionel-O-Gauge-6-37851-Scale-Telephone-Poles.jpg))? I know some places they use cleats to climb the poles instead, but it'll add a little more noise (and therefore realism) if those things were added.

And hey CrashDrive, glad you're with us. Yeah, don't worry about texturing, that'll be done later and possibly by someone else (unless you volunteer for it). The current details look great, and should work well when textures are added, but of course add more detail where you see fit ;) Is the fence easy to extend?
Title: Re: CCC #1: Creatures Cycling
Post by: captaindrewi on July 11, 2013, 07:15:25 am
yeah, did think of them, have put some in.
locally the appear only at the top of the pole.they must use a ladder to negotiate the lower part and use the foot rests to do maintenance etc.
Unlike the pic you linked to where the items go to the floor.
If that was the case where i live, there would be a steep increase in the mortality rate.
and i don't think i would have seen my 10th birthday.
Title: Re: CCC #1: Creatures Cycling
Post by: Raxx on July 11, 2013, 11:05:12 pm
captaindrewi, I think it'd have been the same for me as well. I recall wanting to climb those things but they were too high up :P Looks good, I'd say it's complete. Feel free to share the file if you're done with it, and of course you can pick up another task if you're game ;)

CrashDrive, I think the iron supports and railings are good. The railings seem a little short though. As for more detailing, that's up to you. I imagine most of the house would be blurred at least a small amount, since the bike is going to be on the road, but depending on the scene setup it could be helpful for some details to cast their own shadows, or add more where they could silhouette against other details.

Herewith, The Tandem The .an8 File is 14.8 meg! However, I have dissected all the parts into individual files for easier texturing etc.

The BikeStand, (yes there is one on it!) is a morph, its set at open. There ae also some others I played about with but I think they are now non-operational.

edit:forgot the image!

not a real flamingo :o....a garden ornament flamingo.
possibly work when textured and bumpmapped.  :-\

Quite the large file kreator, but it opens well and looks great!

captaindrewi, a welcome addition to the project ;) I think a texture would be sufficient for the rest! I'm marking it as complete, if you'd like to share the file.

I should have a nice update on the frog sometime this weekend :)

Drewi: ooh cool Flamingo!...Its real!....usually those ornaments are on one long spike...Lidl`s have them at the moment!

Raxx: I tried to get the polycount down but I couldn`t see where to save, but glad you like it. I might have a stab at somthing organic myself with the Lizard, that should be fun, thats if nobody else intends on having it?

Great work guys!

kreator, not bad for a first attempt. Is there a specific species of lizard that you're going for? He looks a little square-ish, maybe you can soften him up a little ;)

CrashDrive, excellent detailing so far. I'm sure your hours are well spent :) I agree, a bit of foliage would help, I kind of forgot to add those to the task list. I'm thinking two large trees, two small trees, and two types of bushes. I'll add 'em to the list, and if anyone wants to take a shot at them then let me know.

I promised a nice update on the frog, so I spent the night finishing him up. Overall time was 6 1/2 hours, and I recorded the entire thing and put a sped-up version on youtube. Next time I'll probably just do a timelapse vid, so as to avoid the huge files...

Youtube Video (http://youtu.be/MtbSbcMaAcY)

You know I like gifs ;) The youtube vid may not be ready for a few hours after this post. I started getting tired at the hands and feet, but it should be pose-able.

I thought so too, The missus said it looks like a crocodile (Cheek!) so have been revising him,  as I did rig it, and found some blatant issues with the mesh!  I`m not happy with the feet either, so they will be re-worked as well, just hope they reach the pedals!!

Lionel_the Lizard .....Thats his name...I`m just about done with him and he`ll have to do now, his starting to bug me!

I have spent way too many hours on it with rigs etc , but he will now pose without too much deformation. ( I think... unless he does a somersault)

Is the final going to be animated or is it just a still?

Musings
Yeah the back wheel and seat are going to need lowering or something unless the lizard puts his feet up and the poor old frog does all the pedaling. :)
There are many tree generators out there that will probably generate what is required without the silly file size of mine but as we are using anim8or exclusively this is the best i could muster.
Though i think someone could perhaps do better, i seem to remember others doing work in this area but i may have dreamt it.
CrashDrive Kreator Raxx Great work. 8)
Title: Re: CCC #1: Creatures Cycling
Post by: kreator on July 16, 2013, 11:58:37 am
Haha!. :D  :D I had a go at placing him (Lionel) on the bike!! The tail gets in the way to start with and his feet cannot reach the pedals!  ::)

So some reconstructive surgery will be needed for his legs, and I might add a Bike Trailer for his tail,|I think.  :-\
Title: Re: CCC #1: Creatures Cycling
Post by: Raxx on July 16, 2013, 03:21:40 pm
Thanks CrashDrive and captaindrewi!

captaindrewi, nice tree :) True, there are generators but as you said the goal is to make it as Anim8or-exclusive as possible. I'll try and hammer out one or two trees as well, using PHUR. It's my fault for not mentioning it, but next time unwrap the leaves before you multiply them, so that whoever textures it doesn't have to unwrap each leaf. It's not hard to do with sophisticated software, but not everyone has access to such ;)

kreator, indeed, the proportions certainly need some work to fit on the bike. But not all lizards have stubby hind legs. Take the Basilisk lizard for instance. It's ok if you combine different species of lizard into one, I doubt any of us care if the final render is scrutinized by a herpetologist. I think your model still looks croc-like. Attached are some ideas on how you could change it to look more like a lizard. Basically, have the mouth divide the head more in half, larger eyes possibly angled more upward, and wider head in the shape as drawn. Also, the hind legs should probably bend the other way. Don't worry about rigging him at this stage, unless you're doing it to test things out. It still needs to be unwrapped and textured by someone, which could totally render your painted weights null and void if it's done outside of Anim8or.

The idea is to make it a still render, as it requires less commitment. Beyond that, anyone can animate it if they wish to.

Here's an unreasonable tree....I'll give it another shot later ::)

Spent approximately around 96 hours on this darn Lizard, and other projects are suffering now, so its time now to call it a day on Lionel if anybody wants to fiddle about with him they are welcome!

http://www.anim8orworld.com/animation/Lionel_Test1.mp4

I originally had his back feet facing to the rear but that caused problems, because there was no way you could pose him on the bike without serious deformation of the mesh, however, I suppose another model with morphs could overcome that problem, but I have other projects to get on with as I said earlier.

Revised file attached.

On another note, you can mirror bones in 0.97e however they mirror to the same side then you have to rotate them over! and do not try any sequencing with it in 0.97e as it will corrupt the file adding blank sequences and an imaginary scene declaration , ( I did this by mistake and had a corrupted file, but salvaged it by deleting any decalartions to sequences and scene.)

Post by: kreator on July 18, 2013, 03:26:54 pm
Thanks drew for taking a look at him, this what I like about collaboration, I was getting bogged down with him, and it helps enormously what someone can take a mesh, have a new slant on it and modify it, to look somewhat better.

I still believe the backward facing feet will not work if animated, or for that matter posed.

I really think some of the other posters at the site took on the challenge, or are the 7923 new members since Jan 2013 just the usual spammers...

CrashDrive, excellent house, the stonework looks fine to me. Are you going to detail the chimney the same way? We can have a go at the lawn whenever you post up the model, unless you wish to do it yourself!

kreator, I may have a go at making some changes to the lizard as well. Weekend's coming up ;)

And headwax, thanks for the words of encouragement!

Good stuff guys, I like how the models are coming along!

Crashdrive: if i could give you one more comment before you finish it; the garage door (in fact the whole garage) seems a bit small to fit a car in (especially the one im making haha) . If you compare it to the front door, two people could fit in it next to each other now, not quite a car though.

Unless you meant it as a shed moreso than a garage of course.
I like the look of the house though, good job!

- I'm way behind, time to step up a gear haha

Thanks Crashdrive.. the car I'm making (Chevrolet Bel Air) is apparently 16' 5" by 6' 7" .

The width should fit just about.. couldn't hurt to add a foot or two for easier entry maybe.

Depth-wise it will need some more space I think. It looks about 13 feet deep at the moment. If you add a car and some space to walk around it, I think it might need another 10 feet for a good fit.

Liking the house! Nice stuff.

Thanks for the adjustments, Crashdrive. Not sure if the car will be in the garage or on the driveway in the final image, but it will at least look possible to fit it in ;)

Just to show I am working on this, a wip on the car so far. Still have a bit of modeling to do (most of the window sections, wheels, ornaments, and inside a bit.

I'll get it done in a day or two maybe . I have to try before friday; because I'm leaving for a week.

Crashdrive, I know how you feel.. Especially when modeling loosely from a picture or one image, interpreting details can be difficult. Usually I come back and remodel parts a few times until it fits ;)

Here a different interpretation for the car, no need to use it in the picture of course, just was messing around. (Quick render)

Lookin' good , crashdrive!

sorry I've been working on a different project in the meantime, and I think the forum going offline for a few days didnt help either ;)

The lizard might need a finishing touch still, I'll have a look at that maybe.

Then it's over to texturing? (the house is mostly done of course, but for the other objects ;)  )

Sorry I haven't been around in a while.. Wasn't feeling too good

I've put all the finished items together in a file , see attachment.
Crashdrive, your file didn't include the flamingo's and tree unfortunately.

The file might be too big too attach? not sure.. it's not working, so I uploaded it to here:

Are we going to finish this off then? Or should we wait for Raxx to officiate the next steps? I certainly would like to see this progressing further.
Title: Re: CCC #1: Creatures Cycling
Post by: Raxx on October 09, 2013, 03:14:02 pm
Sorry for being a bit nonexistent lately. The lizard and frog don't have clothing yet, which would be nice to have before moving on. After that we can wrap things up by texturing whatever still needs texturing, and then do the final scene set up and rendering on our own.

So I'll go ahead and take care of the clothing and have it done before the end of this weekend.

Would anyone like to volunteer to make a large tree and a variety of grass strands?

Hey Raxx,

It is good to finish this stage and move on..

I've made some adjustments to Lionel, see attachment.. The feet are still a bit of an issue, but maybe it's sufficient to pose.

I'll make some grass strands .. not good with trees. Crashdrive, I liked the one you made, maybe you can make another bigger one to use? Raxx, the one you made was cool as well.. but my an8 crashed when I tried to move it!  :P

CD: I guess any tree would do, an old one would  be nice of course :P I'll fix the shingles for you !

Don't worry about the time - there are some other things that  need to be modeled as well in the meantime.

Yea lizards aren't really made to cycle, maybe we can lower the seat for him? or let the frog do all the work ;)

Alright, here's an updated file with all the elements included & all the textures. See the render for the total picture.

I've added some deck chairs to the mix.
There is also an Object with just the elements that make up the different ground planes on which the grass can be spread using Raxx' PHur plugin.

Alright, added a working mouth/tongue. The clothes are taking longer than expected. I just need to make a sailor hat and tie, and then unwrap and texture all of it. Update attached.

[edit] Hat and tie done.

Looking great, Raxx!
that's one character all modeled, cool!

I've made a tree to go with the house
Kept the leaves pretty big, so that it won't have too many polies, hope it looks good enough though.
Added the tree to the main file:

Raxx, I demand a modeling tutorial. :D
Guys, this is coming along great! I have sort of fallen off of the animation bandwagon in pursuit of music (for animations?) but I'm following this project pretty closely, and the detail dedication is awesome! Can't wait to see what's next!
