The things written in the "edge editing" section of the manual don't work for me.
I have a simple rectangle. I want it to have slightly rounded corners/edges like a mobile phone. I convert it to a mesh object, click ctrl+A, choose "edit - edge properties" from the menu and whatever numbers I enter for "smooth" and "rounded", nothing happens.
If I doubleclick my object and change the smooth angle to something higher than 90 - for example 91 - I get a shaded object in my perspective view, but the corners are still not rounded.
How do I correctly use this function?
-
Rounding only gets activated for subdivision objects. If you select the mesh and go to build->Convert to Subdivided, you'll see the effects of the rounding. Note that to see changes in rounding, you have to double click the subdivision object and press OK every time you change the edge properties.
Creasing only gets activated for regular mesh objects. It's kind of the same thing as smoothing groups, except a little more flexible. Edges you crease will ignore the smooth angle.
Edit: To get slightly rounded corners, you can try the bevel tool ('b' when in point edit mode). It isn't perfect though, so if you can't get the results you want then I recommend doing it manually.

I tried again and can't get it done. Converting to subdivided changes my rectangle to a soap, creasing a mesh object doesn't do anything and the bevel tool gives me sharp edges instead of rounded corners.
-
Soap thats a good name for it! Select a cube convert to mesh, in edge mode select all the edges, and then do a bevel, you just need to reinforce the initial edges with the bevel tool so do it slowly, then just subdivide.

1: initial cube
2: cube subdivided that looks like soap
3: cube with edge reinforcement (bevelled slightly)
4: edge reinforced cube subdivided.

try the tool named "Point Bevel" ( to do read the usage carefully ).
this tool can work on Face as well ( i think Rectangle mean Face as Anim8or is 3D ).
if you are talking about 'Vertex-Chamfer' it is not present in Anim8or (before v98)!
you may also try other tool to do it without Subdivision use.
( see the image & you can find the Script here :

also search the Forum Claude made a Point Bevel Script as well and new version of Anim8or (v98) have it. i think it will be helpful to you.

I managed to get it done with kreator's explanation. Is there a way to adjust the radius? I only moved the mouse about two pixels, it's looks like a mobile phone already and not like a soap anymore, but the corners are still too round for my taste.

Bugmenot: Post your .an8 file and we can see what you want

try this as well - see the attached image.
it will be better to know what kind of phone you are modeling, name it/give the model number/attach a picture/(or a render output if you don't wish to show us your file) at least/a web link; so that we may know what you wish to do and can help you worthfully.
