I would like to create what you can see on that screenshot attached. The example only has horizontal lines, but I'd like to achieve this effect with a wireframe consisting of horizonal and vertical lines.
I guess I would have to make a flat cube with lots of divisions, z-axis set to zero and work with the bevel or bump tool, by selecting points in a circular selection, but how exactly?

You could add a reference image of a circle as a guide to selecting points - use a lower resolution grid & convert it to a subdivision, too.
Perhaps Terranim8or's facility to create a terrain from a height map might do the trick.
If it just has to look like a wireframe, you could always just lathe the shape then UV map a grid texture over it..

What I'd try is creating a plane with many many divisions, then use terranim8or's displacement map feature, and just draw up what would normally be a bumpmap but use that for a displacement map and the program should do the work for you.
