I think I've got this right, is a bump map a way of adding a bumpy texture to an object without messing about with the models faces?
If not...well, I'm an idiot.......but......
If so could someone give me an idiots guide to how its done please?
Thanks

You are right.
Example, if you have a brick wall (wall covered with a pic of bricks) if you then use that same picture and turn it into black and white where the mortar is black and the bricks are white, use it as a bump map and your brick wall will show grooves where the mortar is.

Cool I'll have a go in a min.
Thanks lynn22

Awesome:

Had a little trouble at first as I didn't realise the bump doesn't take effect until it's rendered.
Thanks for the help.

Sorry about that, I should have mentioned the render, I forgot :)
Glad you found it, your image looks great.

Am I right in thinking if the two colours that make the bump possible (black and white),
would different shades of grey make any difference?
I mean: insted of just full bump (black) and no bump (white) would grey make a medium bump?
-
if you thought that, you'd be right, yes, the colours affect the bumpy-ness of it, and if you want a more obvious bump, the bumpmap texture in the material is only at 30%, bump it up to 100 to make the bump more obvious
-
Yes, inbetween shades of gray make smaller bumps. It's the same with transparency maps and specular maps.

Actually if you go to view->preferences and tick the Use Shaders box you'll be able to see the bumpmap in real time

"Use Shaders" is grayed out in my preferences, any obvious reason why ?

Yeah, mine is too?

do you have a graphics card (non-integrated) or their drivers installed?
i have a 7300GT with forceware 169.25
-
I'm using my laptop at the min as my PC has gone strange and I don't think this thing has anything inside it never mind a graphics card. Lol
-
I don't have a graphics card, just a plain PC, that explains it :)
-
To get the Shaders options you need to have an OpenGL 2.0 compatible card and new enough drivers. OpenGL compatibility is not labeled, so look for DirectX 9 compatibility.
The lowest Nvidia is the FX 5200, and I'm not sure about ATI.

I have been searching the web for help with textures and found this site www.arroway.de/en/index.html.
The quality is fantastic.
There doesn't seem to be a useful link thread on this forum (that I can find)
I know google is everyones friend but it may be a good idea to start one up.

Are you looking for textures? Because I have a great site for realistic textures and pictures:
http://cgtextures.com/ It has a 30MB upload limit a day but that equals like 30 textures a day so that should be enough.
