Title: [ COMPLETE ] Challenge #24: Halls of Fury!
Post by: Raxx on January 05, 2011, 10:40:09 pm
(http://an8.the-meadow.net/Com/Challenges/Hallway_Sample.jpg)
Halls of Fury!

Welcome to Challenge #24! The goal here is to fill the above hallway with whatever you see fit! Make a cool scene out of it!

Wait, what?
That's right folks. You get a lovely clean canvas in the form of 5 sides to do whatever you wish! Add content in or around the halls, modify the walls to your liking, add more hallways, whatever you please!

Eh, What's The Catch?
Uh oh. Umm....

Deadline
One Whole Month! (March 13th, 2011)

A puh-PRIZE!?!
The top three winners get a poster shipped to them with all the entries in it! (so long as there are 5+ entries).

Notes
Use whatever renderer you want!

Use the .an8 file as your foundation for your hallway!

Please post your final image as 1800x360!

Mini-FAQ
Q: Should the word "Fury" reflect in the scene?
A: Only if you want it to ;) That won't be in the judging criteria. The public will be judging the entries based on overall impression.

Q: Seems like a lot of work, can I do this challenge with someone else?
A: Yes! The end result is all that matters, so long as it's done through sweat and tears! (no prefabs please!)

Q: I'm using XXXX program to do my non-modeling work. Does the scene orientation/camera setup have to perfectly match the Anim8or version?
A: Don't be the one sticking out like a sore thumb! Try to match it as perfectly as possible! Most scene/camera systems should be similar enough to where you can just enter the same coordinates and FOV you'll be pretty close to the original. After that it's just a bit of tweaking!

Q: Do I have to use the same lighting/materials/etc that's in the attached .an8 file?
A: No, the only things you have to keep the same are the dimensions of the hallway, the 5:1 ratio of the camera resolution, and the same distance and FOV. You can add whatever you want to the hallway, add more hallways or rooms, add stuff around the hallway to supplement it, add stuff inside it, etc. Just don't block the original hallway from the camera. Also from the sample you only really get the impression of one kind of scale. But you can make it out to whatever scale of detail you want. Like a huge banquet or concert hall, a portion of a mall, a regular underground hallway, a hotel hallway, a mouse nest, or whatever. Just remember that you can only add so much detail to the outside of it (equal to the black space around the hallway in the render above). Everything else will be cropped out!

How many hours do you have in your minute Raxx? ;D ;D ;D

Still waiting for the file.

One question?  Should the word "Fury" reflect in the scene?

One question?  Should the word "Fury" reflect in the scene?

Only if you want it to ;) That won't be in the judging criteria. Entries will be judged based on overall impression by the general public. I'll edit my first post to include that info.

And yeah, my first post is updated with the .an8 file with the hallway :o

Hm, kinda strange. I did some renders and the results were not what I thought they would be. And the whole challenge with the file given:  ??? So, we can add something to the hall, modify it or only something inside of it. And the local lights must stay ?

The images below are: as it is on screen ( not rendered )
                               rendered with resolution given
                               rendered with resolution 1000 x 700

so why the difference of what we see?
Title: Re: Challenge #24: Halls of Fury!
Post by: Raxx on January 06, 2011, 11:35:37 am
Well, to be honest that's the old way that things had to be done. Basically you could only use a 5:1 aspect ratio (1800x360, 900x180, 675x135, 450x90, etc) in your renders in order to get the same results as I got. But it's not handy for quick previews or even seeing it in the OpenGL workspace, so I went ahead and adjusted the .an8 file's scene and camera settings. This way you can see what it'll look like without having to render it, and rendering any ratio puts the entire scene in the render anyway.

So to all you folks who already downloaded it, feel free to download the file again for the adjusted camera. The objects are untouched so you can just import the objects if you have already started on it. However it won't make a difference to the final result whether you download the new file or not, since rendering at 5:1 ratio gives the same result in both cases.

And to answer your other question, no the lights don't have to be the same. The only things that have to be the same is the camera position and FOV, the dimensions of the original hallway, and the 1800x360 final render requirement.

Like a huge banquet or concert hall, a portion of a mall, a regular underground hallway, a hotel hallway, a mouse nest, or even some little ant hole or whatever.

Ok, we'll see what we can do, very interesting what people will come with on this theme. Although the camera position looks not so artistic for me  :P And one suggestion: if for the next challenges there will be those challenge polls, not to create new topics but use the old ( open them ) because if not , there will be a mess here i guess  8)
Title: Re: Challenge #24: Halls of Fury!
Post by: Raxx on January 07, 2011, 02:32:42 pm
Don't worry about the poll topics ;)

The scene orientation is there for maximum creativity. You can tell a story with this kind of setup, it all depends on the artist.

Hey thanks. :O Oh the sand it will be bumped I think.

I've started posting wips here http://www.anim8or.com/smf/index.php?topic=2005.60

maybe people could do the same - ie make a thread to show their wips. ;)

Nothing wrong with posting wips here either, as a way for people to keep track of everyone's progress more easily.

Good start on your ant and fish btw, it'll be interesting to see what you come up with overall ;)

Post by: headwax on January 09, 2011, 10:24:23 pm
Thanks Raxx, yes I'm i nterested in what it will be also.

Edit+ Raxx well I deleted the fish because of lack of interest. Silly really to flog a dead horse, eh? (or dead fish in this case).
Wasn't a bad try though. The textures looked great :) except for the tail.
I'm off for a surf.

Hope I haven't let you down, I still use anim8or all the time. It's a great program.
Thanks for trying to rev up the challenges!
Looking forward to being able to use your new interface gadget when I get windows 7.
Bye for  now from the dry part.

Hey guys! I'm participating for once! ^^
Here is what I have so far. Let me know what you think!

(Everything [except the hallway obviously] is modeled and textured by me in anim8or just for this project, nothing has been recycled.)

I have new hope for this challenge, and for Anim8or. So don't really expect me to participate this time, but I will certainly try. :)

That's already been explained. All you need to keep is the overall "hall" and camera angle. Everything else can be completely original.

I have an idea, so I think I might be able to enter this one. ;)

Aw. Nobody submitted anything?

This lack of activity is spurring me on to make something. This was a nice challenge. I just was busy with school stuff so I didn't quite voice out that I'd join. I had an idea but couldn't foresee that I'd be able to put it into motion.

Janro runs off to make something.

Very cool, I know they're unfinished but with a bit more lighting work they'd have turned out even better. Even so you had some nice ideas!

I wish there were more entries (including my own), does anyone wish to extend the deadline for this challenge?
Title: Re: Challenge #24: Halls of Fury!
Post by: Janro on February 06, 2011, 12:02:18 pm
If you wouldn't mind could you extend it so that I may attempt to submit something? Although that'd be a bit unfair though for NickE I think. :( If he thinks it unfair then I won't push for it.

The more the merrier!  I was late and my submissions unfinished!  Where is the fun in being the only one?  Extend please.

I'll try. ;)

Agh wish I could work on this but college work is getting in the way of my idea which I realise is more complicated than I first thought :P

Will still try to get something in for this though. maybe just something abstract lol

Below is a quick render of the second one:
A covered walkway between two buildings.  A curiously empty and unfinished urban scene.

That looks cool! It reminds me the train station in the place I'm being.

Glass windows connected by red and gray construction:

And the tunnel in red and yellow hovering over the railways:

View at the entrance to main hall from inside of the tunnel/walkway:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/15632944@N00/4413333964/

I like the the building, even if it looks a bit neglected from the outside. It looks the best at sunny days when windows reflect sunlight, sky and environment at different angles. Coming back to the topic ;) You can make a really good use of lighting and enviro map (or self illuminated hemisphere), to make it look real. Some low-poly trees (i.e. http://www.treegenerator.com/freetrees.htm ) on the street would be fun as well. This looks really promising :)

Nice work everyone so far. Sorry to be late with this, thanks for the challenge Raxx !

This is my entry as long as it conforms with the rules.

The top one is the correct size image.
The bottom one is larger for more detail.

Subject Title: The Robot Factory.
Meshes: Anim8or; Renderer: Carrara 8;
Artist: Andrew Finnie (contact details on image, bottom left.)

Looking forward to seeing everyone's work.

Title: Re: Challenge #24: Halls of Fury!
Post by: Janro on February 13, 2011, 09:14:11 am
Ok I'm already halfway building my subject model (one of them anyway) for this project and I have a concept as to how it'll go. I'll post some screens tomorrow when it looks a little less messy. XD

Anyway my question. Again it's about the hallway like a few have asked. We are not allowed to change the dimensions of the hallway but we are allowed to modify it to add more hallways/doors and whatnot. That much I understand. Can I replace one of the walls with let's say a low fence, or the ceiling with the leaves and branches of a tree? Basically I put in an element in place of the face of the original hallway. Or would that be going too far? I'm afraid it sounds too radical for this challenge.

Don't worry I have a backup plan. ^^

Yeah don't think i'll really have time, college stuff getting in the way of making stuff and after finishing the work feel more like playing xbox :P

Good luck to you guyses submitting :D
Title: Re: Challenge #24: Halls of Fury!
Post by: Raxx on February 14, 2011, 08:10:34 pm
Hm, very abstract headwax, seems like that's your cup of tea eh? It's a little hard to tell where the walls meet but I think it conforms enough ;)

Janro, the dimensions are the most important. So long as the low fence has something above it that distinctly shows the top boundary in some way or shape then it'll be fine. Basically, if you were to place all of the entries in a column and scrolled through them, ask yourself if yours would be out of place based on how you handled the boundaries. If anything, work on it and seek our opinion :)

I'm hoping for enough entries to be able to stack them on top of each other like some kind of collage. You know what, just for kicks....

Deadline Extended To: Sunday, March 13, 2011
The top three winners get a poster shipped to them with all the entries in it! (so long as there are 5+ entries).

This is just a little more incentive to participate.

I'll be working on mine soon enough. Just gotta scrape the rust off again...I'm a little bit in 3D Joe Wiltshire's predicament, except it's work rather than college and reading instead of games. Darn you Kindle App for Android! :P

Ok, WIP as promised, rendered in ART.  Final image will be titled "Escape from launch bay 17" and will most likely be rendered in Carrara.  There are a few layers of detail remaining, aside from the 'action' of the escape itself.
Title: Re: Challenge #24: Halls of Fury!
Post by: Janro on February 15, 2011, 09:55:41 am
Right. I'll think about it. I haven't built the background yet... I wonder if that's a bad thing :\ Ah indecisiveness.

Anyway I've finished modelling my main subject. I'll be duplicating him with different colors and textures to fill up the scene with hopefully a battle zone.

Attached is a screenshot as well as my quickly recreated study(original went missing somewhere in my university's campus). Hopefully you can see what I meant in the quick sketch. As for the fence I realized it wasn't as low as I thought when I placed in some figures to get size comparison. The large tree's leaves are what's taking the place of the top and the trunk for the wall. Is that still relatively conforming to hallway box shape?

This is my entry.  Modelled and rendered in Anim8or (130 hours render time!!!) with a bit of post-render hand retouching.

Image title: A Narrow Escape.

Title: Re: Challenge #24: Halls of Fury!
Post by: 3D Joe Wiltshire on February 25, 2011, 09:42:05 pm
Nice render ensoniq! 130 hours is long for a face on render lol, you must've used a lot of art stuff for that!
Title: Re: Challenge #24: Halls of Fury!
Post by: ENSONIQ5 on February 25, 2011, 10:24:59 pm
Most of the materials have at least one ART attribute (specular reflection or glossy reflector) but the big speed killer was the 14 soft-shadow lights.  I expect Carrara would have completed the render in a couple of hours (that's with full ambient occlusion, secondary lighting, etc.) but I didn't have time to re-jig the materials and UV coords and I had a PC that wouldn't be needed for a few days.

Good job ENSONIQ5, nice level of detail in your scene. Reminds me of the ol' Star Wars escape from the Death Star.

Anyone else working on their entries? Finally started mine so let's hope it'll be added to the fray in time ;)

wonderful ensoniq.
i hope this is ok for inclusion into the challenge
This could be called invisible fury
as the fury is off screen, centred in me waiting for the render to conclude.
36hrs ray traced shadows.
I accidently terminated a previous attempt at 75% completion. :o
but i'll call it 'weave'.

That is just awesome Ensoniq. I really have to get my game on now... after midterms. Working on mine on and off. Will post what I have in tomorrow or the day after.

By the way, Did my study make any sense Raxx?
Title: Re: Challenge #24: Halls of Fury!
Post by: Raxx on February 28, 2011, 11:06:14 am
Oops, thought I replied to that already.

Hard to say if it'd work. Can you put the tree in the middle back and put another fence or building on the right side instead, or something like that?

Captaindrewi, looks good and a bit abstract as well. I think with you and ENSONIQ5 having such long render times, I'll stick to using just the scanline renderer myself :P

Reminds me to check out Messiah Studio's rendering capabilities ASAP.

Err, well. While I have a feeling this might go the way of the dragon and never get completed, I figured I'd show my progress until the progress stops :P

It'll be something like a demon vs hero scene.

That is one interesting creature Raxx. Looking pretty good.

I'm falling behind schedule. Anyway here's what I've built for my setting. Testing out the fence wall. I was thinking of doing away with the tree if I could find a way to replace the ceiling. And I still need to build the wall on the left.

So I haven't tinkered with the lighting just yet so the default lights are still rigged there. I intend to finish the modelling first before doing anything else. I admit that its not a lot of work done compared to the others.

I love the idea of having the scene elements define the hallway space, rather than using a strict 'room', very inventive!
Title: Re: Challenge #24: Halls of Fury!
Post by: Raxx on March 06, 2011, 12:00:04 pm
Looks like it might work Janro, maybe you could make it some kind of waterfront or something and give it a wooden bridge up top to replace most of the ceiling, or something like that.

captaindrewi, I just noticed that your render is either cropped or the camera was moved or it wasn't rendered to spec. What's the deal with that?

Here's my progress with the demon. Added the usual spikes and stuff. The arms need work but I might just skip it and start on the rest of the scene.

Just 2D edit it, all it needs is the border increased in size and the image resaved to the correct dimensions.  The actual detail part is correct, no need to re-render.

captaindrewi, looks much better. The perspective's a bit off though because it wasn't originally rendered at the same distance or whatever, but I think it looks close enough to matching the others ;)

Indian8or, nice scene there, did you make those models from scratch for the challenge itself? I do have to comment on the dimensions of the hallway...I don't think they match the original. I hope it wouldn't be too much trouble to ask if you could try adjusting it a little more closer to what it should be?

I'm slowly working on my hallway, fleshing out the basic stuff and some of the lighting. Interior of a house. It'll be a...obscure birthday party...

Thanks for the feedback guys. I should've checked back here before working. Made a real quick tree and leaves. (College work is killer and deadlines so close to each other.)

Raxx, that would actually solve my problem right now. XD Might design something flat for the left hand side. I've been thinking of a gate but I didn't want a canopy. For some reason the design I am currently trying to achieve is somewhat more on the tribal/medieval village side, hence the wooden pike fence. Must sound strange I suppose. I can't really find the term I'm looking for.

Attached is a quick render of a workaround for the 'roof' A canopy of leaves from trees behind. The only way I can get it to actually pop out would be through lighting I suppose. That'd take some thinking.

Will get back to work on this after BackGroundDesign plate. What a coincidence my plate is a repeat panning background with dimensions which are similar to this challenge.  :D

Indian8or, I think you might have moved the camera or something, it seems to need some adjusting. Look at the attached image to see what I'm talking about, the boundary is in red and you can see that nothing's matching up.

Janro, looks like it's gonna be hard unless you use something man-made, eh. If you can preserve the 8 corners then I think you'll be set. It'll take some creative thinking so good luck ;)

Another? Hardly fair to those who already finished...but...whoever wants a one-week extension, raise your hand!

Personally I have to raise my hand also...there's no chance of me finishing in time :P

As for those who have already finished, there's that Don't Forget collab ;)

Ooh ooh! I've got one!! :D
"Questionable Orders"

Changed the hallway shape into a armour window with a HUD.
I hope that's not cheating.

p.s. Boom.

Alright, I'm still working it, but I had an unexpected weekend visit from my mother-in-law, which means other family coming and going and and and.... So, I doubt I will get this quite done... Then again, my fault for not joining until a couple of days back, as an afterthought...

Anyway, attached a small bit of render of what I have been putting together.

Looks good Jaw Jaw, reminds me of the ol' retro games, probably due to the HUD's design (which is good). Another interesting way to interpret the "hallway" theme.

Arik_the_Red, it's a start ;) Green radioactive sludge?

I won't be finishing mine in time, too much stuff came up over the week. I had started to enjoy designing the hallway interior, so I might keep working on it anyway. Not to mention my idea's too quirky to really pass up :P

I'm afraid I might not be able to finish this. I have to go to class and I might not have enough time when I return.

To at least show what I've got already, here's a wip. All that's missing are the character's really, which I've just boiled down to two.

Now that I look at it though I think it's really stretching it...

EDIT: Managed to finish it (at the expense of my painting XD)

The image needed a tad bit of photoshop color correction to fix up some lighting issue I couldn't handle within Anim8or due to using flat surfaces for leaves. You can't get a good highlight easily on the upper part of the group of leaves. (HoF contact ps.jpg)

But if photomanipulation isn't allowed on the entries then I attached an unedited one just in case. (HoF contact.jpg)

EDIT 2: Crud I rendered the wrong size. I wondered why it was so small. XD

Additional notes: Render time approx: 20 mins

This has a ton of flat surfaces for particles whatnot. I lost count how many copy pastes I did to get a clutter. And due to lack of time I couldn't fill the area with bodies. Ah well.

I found a few faults already while I stare at my screen during render. Lighting is something I should really get practicing with... well basically that here and there and I over darkened some textures for fear the characters won't stand out.

Any feedback is appreciated :D

Hm, you certainly stretched the boundaries, Janro, but I guess it's close enough...you did preserve the corners afterall :P Nice scene though, I think if you had more warriors in there to fill the scene, it'd have looked even better! As for the lighting, certainly has a lot of saturation. But it'd also have been hard to make the darks subtle enough to work against a tropic sunny day as well. Overall for the time you put in it, you've done really well.

Ok, the topic is now (finally) open for voting! I put the images together in the first post so that you don't have to rummage through the entire topic, so feel free to vote on your favorites! I wish Indian8or didn't drop out though, but I think there's enough entries there to make a good poster or T-shirt or something ;)

Yibbeedee Doodah some of those works are sparkling!

Thanks for hosting the challenge Raxx - and carrying it through to the end.
I know why you don't put your own work in. You just don't want to show us up eh :)

Cheers from this part of Oz!

Hah, the secret's out :P

So, voting's over and we know who the winners are! ENSONIQ5 at first place, Headwax in second, and Janro third!

Congrats goes to everyone who participated in this challenge. It was a long one ;) As for the prize winners, give me a few days and I'll set up your options based on if the artists here give me permission to plaster their work on something tangible :P

Hey thats wonderful thanks so much Raxx.

Congrats Ensoniq5 - a well deserved win. And Janro and everybody else - great stuff!
Wonderful to see what the old girl anim8or can do :)

Raxx,  you certainly do have my permission to plaster my work on something tangible (as long as I don't get arrested)

Thanks all & congrats to everybody who managed to submit something.  Initially, when the challenge was posted, I thought the hallway concept was very limited and had little scope for different ideas, but I was certainly proven wrong by the final entries which were amazingly varied in concept.  Anim8or's development may have stagnated a bit but in the hands of imaginative folk it can still amaze.  It is also great to see the WIP work of some who didn't finish, due mainly to not being afraid to tackle far more complex ideas than I was game to!

Thanks to Raxx for your continued enthusiasm, and I am more than happy for my work to be plastered alongside that of these talented artists, much appreciated.

Congrats guys. This was certainly a fascinating challenge to do. I enjoyed and learned quite a lot with working with 'particles'. Shadows don't work too well on them in Anim8or. :D

Sure I don't mind you plastering it on something tangible Raxx :P
