Title: Recently removed all videos from Youtube...
Post by: TheRetroZombie on October 24, 2010, 10:18:20 pm
I have gotten rid of all my videos including Anim8or animations. I've decided to revolutionize my channel which will be mainly about classic games gameplay. I might still use Anim8or for some things dealing with some effects. I am also thinking about learning Blender3d when I have the chance, or when I feel like it  :-\  Though it's been nice learning the basics of 3D animating and modelling and hoping to expand my learning on 3D graphics and video editing. This thread might not mainly be about Anim8or and it might get locked. But whateva  :-\

I never trusted Blender personally.  it was WAY too slow for my computer, it was really complicated, and after downloading it, I discovered I had been infected with Banker Trojans. I also somehow managed to get flooded with 200-something temporary files.  So yeah, never doing that again.  Anim8or all the way, I will be loyal. lol

Blender's safe. But it is complicated.

Too bad you might be...quitting, RetroZombie. Be sure to pop on in here every now and then! ;)

I'm not going to quit Anim8or. It still is a helpful tool. Actually what my reasons are for switching is that a lot of software supports blender. But what about 3D Max and Maya? Are they easier?

I was learning 3dsmax - and I must say that I liked Anim8tor so much because of interface a bit similar to 3dsmax ;) Anim8tor is something like simplified version of the interface, but split into modules just like an old DOS-based 3dstudio. I don't know Maya, but if you're not a student they both can be heavy for your pocket...

I work with both 3ds max and maya. There both great programs, but I must say that maya is a bit better if you want to make animations. 3ds max is great for modeling, but you have more control in maya.

Recently I,ve been using Blender 3d  and I'm pretty good at it but I'm never leaving Anim8or. :)
If I'm making a simple animated short I'll be using Anim8or but if I'm making an over-complicated animated short I'll use Blender. ;)

There's just something special about Anim8or. 8)

I can't leave it.It's close to my heart :) :)

Blender is impossible... But i did some fluid and cloth tests in it. I can't understand the giant interface, which is what make Anim8or awesome. So small, tiny interface, great tool overall.

So I should do Maya other than Blender? More simpler?

I wouldn't say maya is easier...Both maya and blender are hard to learn. Maybe maya even harder since maya is very complicated, but this also makes it very powerfull. If you can get your hands on maya I would go for it.

i think anim8or is like a diamond in the rough. its more of an exception from other 3d software (that ive played around with). everything has a "learning curve" and i really dont think you can go with anothers opinion in the sense of learning. some thing u get some things u dont. i would tinker around with as many as you can before you decide to "pick one". i would think that the top dogs in the industry such as maya and 3ds max are constantly competing with one another so there isnt a "better" one.

kreator and some of his buddies use cararra. its definatly worth checking out. he/they have the download at animanon.com or net. i liked the interface way better than blenders. + they have a bunch of helpfull material like tutorials and they have a great comunity too. (mad props to kreator btw he has done a bunch of things for alot of people)

just dont put all your eggs in one basket. and definatly DO NOT go and buy some fancy software just to try it out. as  long as you put the time and effort in you will do fine.

Actually the latest version of Blender looks pretty good. It looks more simplistic. I also want to use Blender for it's own game engine. I've always wanted to learn how to make small games on my free time.

p.s. doing really good with my new videos on Youtube. Planning out more to come out like new series. But if you like the classics check my channel out!

I've been learning blender and once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature to you, it is powerful and best of all it is FREE just like Anim8or, I heard a lot a people complaining about how hard blender is and I was scared to try it, I downloaded lots of tutorials and learn the basics and to tell you the truth, I will never pay for software like maya of 3dmax, now I think this is a nother great alternative http://www.nevercenter.com   It is called Silo 3D and I got a trial version and works great not hard to learn and not expensive ither.
hope you guy give it a try. and don't get me wrong I still use Anim8or.

Blender seems on the edge of impossible. I could absolutely model something in it, but the sheer amount of time I'd have to put in into is as opposed to the quick and easy tools in Ani8mor just seems too unreliable for reall use.

I'll give my two cents. I personally find anim8or to be a great tool. Comparing Anim8or and Blender is like comparing a pen and paper with a scientific calculator. Anim8or is simple and easy to use, just like the pen. pen and paper are usefull for many things, but you can't do calculations as quickly as the calculator. Each has thier own advantages; I wouldn't use a scientific calculator to add 2+2, I would use my head. However, I wouldn't want to calculate any country's national spending record with pen and paper, I could, but it would take forever.

And just like a scientific calculator, if you understand complex math, those calculators come fairly natural. It doesn't take long to get a math scholar to use one.

I got Blender a little more than a week ago, and already I can pump out helicopter models in 1/2 a day. Did I learn Blender? No. Have I learned Anim8or? No. Have I learned how to make an effective model? Yes. If you understand the concepts behind 3D animation, then doing them in another program is easy. You may learn every button on a scientific calculator, but if you don't know algebra, you will never be able to use the calculator. Don't study your calculator, study math. Then you will be able to do all the functions of that grand scientific calculator, on a piece of paper. Don't study Blender, Maya, 3DSMax, or Anim8or. Study animation. Then you can be great no matter what program you use.

Ok, that's a bit more than 2 cents. ::)

Woah, everything you just said is true. I really like your analogy, it may actually helps out in years to come.

lol, it's like you guys don't want me to expand my knowledge of 3D animating software & stay on Anim8or. Well anyways I got a new laptop which is awesome. It's a lot better than my crappy commercialized PC that can't even run Portal without being all slow even when the graphics are on low. I just recently bought the Orange Box :D Half Life 2 ftw!

Retro,
I know it is important to hear others opinions, but why don't you give it a try and find out for your self, (I'm talking about Blender) perhaps it will win your hart, as complex as it is I like the challenge of it, once you see how powerfull it is and the things you can do you'll probably fall in love with it, for me I use it more for special effects than modelling, I like to create movie intros for my family videos and it's awesome. and there's so many resourses that can help you learn it one step at time.

hope this helps.

If you're going to take the Blender plunge, then I HIGHLY recommend getting some books.  The Essential Blender, Blender for Dummies, that sort of thing.  Blender's not the kind of thing you're probably going to gain much with if you just try to sit down and mess with it.  Learning the Keyboard Shortcuts alone is huge.

Once I got my feet wet with Blender, I found myself use a combination of both for any given project.  I'd say it was something like 90% an8 and 10% Blender, but that 10% usually was things you could do in five miuntes in Blender that would take three hours in an8.

With the now total lack of an upgrade for anim8or in the last Four tears! (sorry years !!)

I thought it would be nice to start using Blender 2.64 ( yes I know another Learning Curve!!) but its pleasantly suprising it is now, much more intuiative,

And this Manual makes it a lot easier ! Written by John M Blain.

Its in our Anim8orWorld Public dropbox Folder so head over there and pick a copy up ( in pdf format)

And start the learning Process. We also have a new Blender and Maya board for beginners so hop over and get involved.

to be honest I've learned to like Carrara a lot even though I haven't done much with it, and I never really used messiah3d (even though it has an extremely powerful renderer). For some reason pretty much all of my 3d work has been done with anim8or. I even have the modeling and posing software made for Carrara  ::)

I guess it just goes to show simplicity done right can be a lot better than their counterparts.
