I usually make a low quality test render (AA off) of my scenes to control if everything seems OK.
I had the idea today to evaluate the render time with the time taken by this test render. I tryed it with a small scene and come to this result:
render time for the quality render
if AA=4 : 4 x render time with AA off
if AA=9 : 9 x render time with AA off
etc...(I tried 16 and 25 too, I presume it is the same for all value, and that some of you don't need a test to know that!)
Simple and I think helpfull to limit the AA to get a correct render time (I actually have a render in the oven with AA set at 49 that will certainly take +/- 70 hours on my poor old computer...Boring.
It can work too with the image size (a 800x600 render will probably take 4x the time of a 400x300 render)

I use a method which is pretty effective. I render the image with the same setting as the final image (same AA, shadows etc) but I change to resolution to ten times smaller. so ie if your final image should be 1280x720, I render the test at 128x72. This test will be 100 times smaller (in amount of pixels)then your final image. Since you final render will have to render a 100 times more pixels it will that 100 times as long --> if the test render takes one minute, the final will take 100 minutes. It could be of a couple of minutes or something but it's pretty accurate.

I wonder if it would be possible for Steve to add a render estimator to anim8or at some point. An estim8or if you will. or maybe it can be added as a plug in?

right, that would be cool, but i never saw any scripts for scene mod....
