Ofcourse you will have to make a new render for this challenge ;)
but yes...let's go wild...you can use different renderers for this challenge. But the rest should be done in anim8or and ofcourse I can recommend the ART renderer to everyone ;)

A little setting up the scene... borrowed my "main character" from the Antarctic Whaling Base just to use him as a scale figure.

We ARE supposed to try and share a bit of progress, right?

Yup, I mucked up a brickwork, then needed a bumpmap, so GIMP-i-fied it and got me bricks with bumpmap...

Kreator I'd love to see your render but I can't see it on Animanon, it wont let guests see your image!

BLOG1

I thought I`d start this image as I have some time, and my next project is still taking shape

This is a simple scene modelled in anim8or and rendered with ART which took 20 minutes to render
(http://www.animanon.com/ROOM/GardenTable_Chairs.jpg)

However, I exported the scene in anim8or as a 3ds then imported to Carrara

This render incredibly took 9 seconds

Note: if you export as 3ds it will only save the static models, ie: lights, cameras, figures, sequences are NOT exported

So the carrara render is not an exact view as I had to insert a camera and lights to replicate the view Plus I did add some translucency to the umbrella which I will animate

BLOG2
Added some more tables and chairs, and just a quick anim for the brollies, Pity you can`t export the morphs from anim8or into Carrara will have to do those manually in C

Will start on a Marquee soon....

Great stuff, everyone. :)

I like Arik's start, cooldude's nice render. (Although I would suggest adding some more lights and improving on the scene a bit)
Kreator's is awesome. :D

if you are talking about my scene, it was actually rendered in object mode, thats just the object, not even close to being finished.

Hopfully I well get the heart textured soon.

Nope, movies/animations wont be judged in the final entries.  Kreator simply enjoys animation so he goes the extra mile to put his work in motion.  I would always encourage animation, but this competition will be based on images.

Thanks for the good words. Everyone's goods are looking good ;)

Am personally hoping to do both a still and animated, as I want to focus on improving my animation abilities. My animation ideas won't require extreme extra time, so it may happen.

But, at minimum, I think I should have a good still render to work with. Again, I am sticking strictly with anim8or for the modeling and rendering, and use of GIMP for texture work.

Nice challenge idea and the first test renders here are nice.
Maximilianibus; its a good start, you could try to make your texture fit better (apply face to face or try a UV MAp) and perhaps subdivide one more time.
Her is what I have so far, I hope to have time to finish my scene this time...

Glad to see that more people join the game, I hope to see a lot of finished works (mainly mine, of course ;) )
I'm now done with my main render! It has taken 60 hours but I find it wonderfull how anim8or made the diffractions throw the glass!
Now going to accessory renders and post production (AO, DOF, trying to simulate the light rays on the table in the shadow of the glass and add the shadow of the fork that curiosly dont appears...)

(I made everything in anim8or v.97d and used the ART ray tracer renderer.)

Nice Bmattster !!! You didn't use Attributes I think? The whole scene will look more realistic if you do that. And for liquid you can use cylinder and just edit some of its points ( if I am not wrong you used little spheres?) ;)

Come on 3Dgeek11, I want see your stuff here !!!  :D

Here is my entry. I made the adds I wanted.
For the credits:
- Textures (wood and tiles) from lemog.fr (customized in Artweaver for my use)
- Beans: from "Colruyt" (low cost supermarket in Belgium)
- Modelling, texturing, an render in anim8or
- Accessory renders in anim8or (depht channel, light rays in the shadow of the glass, shadow of the fork, AO)
- post production: Artweaver (the most) and Gimp (DOF)
Good luck to everybody joining the challenge!

An amazing result, Tof !

Maximilianibus, have you tried yet to add some more light ? Your image would be much better if you put a little light between the table leg and the camera and would stop your table top from "floating" :)

BMattster, for your next project with glasses you might make the foot of the glass a little bigger, as it is now the glass will fall over at the slightest movement of the table ;)

I'm finished as well, so here it is

Wowa... Thats actually awesome lynn! dunno if you'd want to reveal it untill after the challenge but how did you manage the curtainy effect at the back?
Title: Re: Challenge #21: Dinner is served
Post by: lynn22 on September 13, 2010, 07:41:29 pm
Thank you 3D Joe and no problem, there's no private trick or mystery about the curtain.
Here you go :

In Top View, draw a curvy line with the smooth spline tool (boxed in yellow)
Make the curves irregular and in some places have them overlap the next curve to create an effect in light and shadow. Just look at any curtain in your house and you'll know what I mean.
Make sure that the size of the curves are in proportion with the rest of the scene, not too big and not too small.

In Front View, extrude the spline in the Y direction and texture and that's it.

In this picture most of the curtain effect is just light and shadow, nothing more.

Well, I got a bad deal tying me up... and, sadly, I can't put the time to finish by the deadline... but, here, my "main course".... Nothing else is in a finished state, and I won't be in a position to finish due to real life tie-ups...

Sadly, I don't have a job that lets me sit all day playing with the PC... and family has been demanding time-wise this last week... and will continue to do so for the next few days..

So, all I can do is offer up:

SPORK - America's OTHER Pink Meat... (best eaten with a spork)

Can created and rendered in Anim8or... Label created in GIMP

The normal render toke about 3 hours and the AO 1 hour.

Finally  ;D :D ;D :D Task manager says : " Working time = 35 hours 30 minutes "  :o :P ;D Now I must send my computer to vacations :D I ( computer  ;D) was rendering two pics at the same time, just the lighting and the enviroment were different so I'll choose the "sunset-y" one as my entry, as 3Dgeek11 asked ;D although the other looks more realistic to me. Generally it is not as exactly as I imagined it in my mind, but for first time I think it's ok. Although some material settings came kinda strange ( my mistake ), espesially the spoon and the glass. I used transparent attribute for the glass instead the dielectric, because it's less " heavy " and for the spoon I forgot to increase the specular value. Comparing the glass with the jar ( which has the dielectric attribute ) you can see it. Nevermind, next time ;D. Every body congratulations

Either one's fine, Gyper. ;)

But I love the final result. :D
The first one does actually look more realistic, and maybe a bit better.

Good job!
And, Floyd: Great! I love it. :)

I promise I will enter the next challenge. ;)

Like Janrp said: I rendered one pass (the normal pass) with the textures and shadows on and no AO. And a second pass with no textures and no shadows and only AO (below). The material for the glass is dielectric, with IOR at 1,33.

Here are the passes I used: a normal pass with textures and shadows, an AO pass, Depth pass for the DOF blur and an alpha pass for the background.

This is definitely the most difficult contest to vote on so far, if I had five votes to cast they would be too few to honour the amazing standard of the submitted entries.  It's great to see different takes on the theme, and the level of detail, integrity of the modelling, and 'theatricality' is, in most cases, stunning.  Well done ladies and gentlemen, top quality stuff.

It's easy to make these passes. The normal one is just a normal render. The depth and alpha pass you choose to render along with your normal render: go render>render image and in the frame spec editor you can choose image, alpha channel or Image + alpha channel. Here you can also choose to render a Depth channel (normally I use a z near and far of 50-1000). The AO pass is a bit more complicated. I give al the objects in the scene the default gray material only with the specular value at 0. In scene mode you delete all the lights and at the AO attribute (object>attributes -->name: AmbientOccluder with int 1). Then go settings>lighting and set the global to 0 and the ambient to 3. Now render you scene at an AA value of at least 64 and you AO is done.

Now you will have 4 different images. I use photoshop to combine them. The AO for the soft shadows and contrast. The depth pass for the depth of field blur (all the white will be blurred and the black not). The alpha pass can be used to change the background of your image.
The separate passes will give you much more control and allows you to tweak the effect it has. It also lowers the render time since not everything has to be calculated the same time.

Hmm... That all makes sense, I guess, but I already knew how to render depths and alphas, etc. ;)

I just don't get how you "combine" them... How is that possible..?

Thanks for the info! I might try that the next time I open Anim8or. (I know...I haven't opened it in a while, but I have been fiddling with Cre8or!)

You will need some basic knowledge of photoshop or other 2d painting software to understand. You can use the rendered images as layers on top of each other to compose your final image. Each of this layers you can adjust it's setting like blending mode, contrast, transperancy etc.

Oh, I have PhotoShop and am very good with it. Should have said that before. :P

Just layers, then..?
Hmm...
