Title: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 18, 2010, 04:35:41 pm
I was thinking, for everyone who uses anim8or (and cre8or), if anyone would be interested in making an action/adventure game (like the ones w/ castles, temples, dungeons, basically like a Zelda game). I would need someone who would make the objects, places, and other stuff in anim8or, another person to make music, and a person to make sounds such as a monster yelling or anything like that. It would be wonderful if we also had somebody to help with the cre8or functions also. So reply if you are interested! :) ;) :D ;D 8)

I could do any type of sound (voice, music) in MIDI, and also I am willing to model... Just a side note... most small projects like this break up. Not that I have no faith though.

Ok well you can join if you want, like just post you're ideas/models/sounds here and I'll check them out.

And I hope it wont break up, but yea I'll never know. I'm just giving it a try.

So it's a fantasy type game...? Those use a lot of elements, seems like you'd wanna start on a smaller scale just to discover your game design self but whatever, we'll need a forum or something.
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 18, 2010, 11:01:10 pm
Well I mean it doesn't have to be a very complex game, just a game with simple things, like dungeon/temple with locked doors and boss (it can just be 1 dungeon for now).

Suggestion... if you're serious about organizing something, put up a few pieces of "inspiration work," something to show others what you yourself have to offer a team. Without something to show for yourself, people will be shy of the idea - not sure whether you might be simply wanting others to do all your work while you just cheer it on.

Post by: davygravy123 on August 19, 2010, 09:54:41 am
Yea, I definitely agree with you, Ill work on a bit of it to show you guys. I wouldn't want people doing all the work, or course, but yea I'll try getting started on it.
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davdud101 on August 19, 2010, 10:45:19 am
I'll do some random concept sketches and models.
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 19, 2010, 11:42:32 am
Ok cool, I got a character model but I need to learn how to bone a little better, due to an annoying error when I try using weight brush on it.
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davdud101 on August 19, 2010, 12:01:51 pm
what's the error?
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 19, 2010, 06:35:50 pm
"The bone used to skin an object must be a descendant of the bone to which that object is attached", or something like that...and I can't attach objects to the root bone...
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 19, 2010, 08:48:03 pm
Heres a character I quickly made...
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davdud101 on August 19, 2010, 08:57:26 pm
To me the character is... basic. I was expecting maybe taller charactters or original Runescape-like graphics. But, if this is the style, We'll go with it. Unless you want another modeller...
Oh yeah, and I'll skin the guy so don't worry.
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 19, 2010, 09:48:22 pm
Well we can make another character, I was thinking of adding more to him though. But yea if you got any ideas of characters post them and ill check it out.

davygravy. Just a note. That message isn't an anim8or error. Theres more in the manual about that. ;)
Title: Re: New game
Post by: siragin on August 20, 2010, 08:14:36 am
This is just a little side comment. But since alot of projects seem to eventually wither away and die. How about just starting small and just creating a one level game or demo. and after that if everyone is still interested then you continue to create more levels. This way the project will go by faster. and if it ends you still have something to show. Just a suggestion though.
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 20, 2010, 08:25:12 am
For davdud, that looks like a good char, and siragin, for now Im letting people post thier ideas here and sooner or later (or never in the worst case) ill make 1 level
Title: Re: New game

@ davygravy123- I think someone should get started on the mechanics of the level, just maybe as a demonstration.

remember when i said these would be elf clothes? well nvm about that. i thinks elf clothes should be like green? and more like archery clothes. but i think these will be good for like a mage or sumthing.i will work on the elf/ranger clothes 8)
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 22, 2010, 11:04:16 am
Ok, cool. The clothes look like they would be good for an elf. I've been boning a Link (from Zelda) model, like skinning and boning / sequences. Was thinking of making a Cre8or Zelda game, not working out good in Cre8or loll

Post by: davygravy123 on August 22, 2010, 08:07:55 pm
Here's somethings I thought of right at the top of my head:

-Character (duh)
-Items (like hearts, power-ups,etc)
-Monsters (again, duh)
-MAYBE a boss
-MAYBE NPC's (to ask you to do favors for them)
-A good terrain
-Trees possibly if in a field
-Weapon(s)
-Keys for locked doors
-Treasure for keys (unless you can get them a different way)
-Temple/Dungeon exterior and interior

The list can go on, but that's just a few things.

Title: Re: New game
Post by: RudySchneider on August 23, 2010, 07:58:13 pm
One minute per frame, is that all?  I've done animations that take 20-to-30 minutes per frame or more, and PIXAR-quality frame renders can consume hours of render time.  That's why they have such huge "farms" of rendering machines.  In fact, there were times when I was using three PCs to render sections of an animation.  It still took an agonizingly long time, but atleast far less than it would have with only one.

There are tricks you can use --- like not renedering shadows, and/or dropping anti-aliasing --- depending on the quality you're after.  For instance, if you're just interested in checking the animation "flow," you can eliminate them both from the renders, and simply render a few spot-check "beauty shots" to make sure of your lighting.

Also, don't forget that you should be rendering out individual frames as JPEGs.   That way, you can re-do sections or individual frames after making adjustments that don't affect the rest of the animation.
Title: Re: New game
Post by: CoriDavis on August 23, 2010, 08:02:30 pm
Yeah, my style of rendering is rendering bits and pieces so i'm not rendering a ton at once. in my current video, I have to do that because of how many cameras it has for the different views.
Title: Re: New game
Post by: ADSohr on August 23, 2010, 08:38:25 pm
It took me 26 days to render 700 frames.

That's about 30 minutes per frame on average, but some have took over an hour.
Title: Re: New game

Title: Re: New game
Post by: ADSohr on August 23, 2010, 09:39:31 pm
It was a little risky for me. I did all of my rendering on my school laptop, so I took it to school every day and let it continue rendering. Then I would take it home at night and hope we didn't stop on the way home.

But we are sort of taking over this thread. Back to the game project.

Wow, 6 pages in less than a week. :)

I like the idea a lot. I've been wanting to make a Zelda-like game for a while now. :) But Cre8or doesn't support UV maps and so I settled on Unity 3D but haven't learned it yet... :P

What do you plan to do without UV maps, btw?
And will this be a top down game or a behind the person game? If it's top down/isometric, I quit. :P J/k

I'll consider helping with the programming in Cre8or and making models. But animation isn't my thing.
Care to elaborate on a few points I mentioned above? I really would like to help out in this project. :)
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 24, 2010, 05:17:29 pm
All the help you give would be greatly appreciated. And yeah the UV maps does sound confusing, would have to think about that one.

And yea I assumed it was already gonna be a "behind the person" game, loll I don't really like top-down games too much.
Title: Re: New game

Good, then do you want low-poly like in your avatar or higher poly like Twilight Princess? (Zelda fan here.. :P) (Hint, hint...Means I want a ZELDA fan game. :P)
Just give me a few suggestions on what this game is about, like, is it a FAN-game on a video game series? Or a made-up game? If the latter, then we'll need some info on what the game style is going to be. ;)

I should be able to give you some stuff this week.

As for the UV maps, we'll have to do individual textures for the models. Which isn't too hard, but it would be better to make UV maps. But I can manage with that.

Or, if we're going for a low-poly look, we don't need textures at all. :P
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 24, 2010, 11:28:53 pm
Yea we probably need a low-poly. And I think some people want to make an original game (I could be wrong). I got a not-so-big poly Link (Zelda) model you can use if you'd like, like make sequences n other stuff.

Hmm, so low-poly, eh? That should be easy. :D

I'd like a rough little write-up of what the game is about, though, so I know what to make.
We also need a sort of character/model list so we can get better organized. Maybe create a free forum so we can just post there and keep up with the project?

In any case, I propose you update the first post with the project leaders, "rough write-up" and project members, etc. Because we'll never get anywhere without being a bit more organized. ;)

try Proboards, it's helpful.  you'd just have to post a link. but some website-builders have forums built in like webs.com

Oh, well you'll need to give me a link to your website. :P
I can set up an SMF forum (like these forums, I love SMF) very easily if you like.

Or any other kind of forum, too. Unless you don't trust me editing your site.. ;) You can do a forum, also, just follow the instructions on the forum's site. If you need help, as I said, I'm experienced. ;)

And okay about the models and such, I guess we'll see about it once we get the forum going.
:)

Okay, well do they allow file uploads, etc? If so, then just go to whatever forum company you want, and download the package you need. Then upload it all to a folder called "forum" or something and then follow the instructions from the site. Should work, but if you want, I can do it, or I can PM give you a step-by-step if you want. Depending on what forum you're using.

Good luck. ^^

Hmm.. could you maybe make another page on your site and post the link up? other than that, I don't know.  You could also post a chat box on your website, I had a forum once that had XAT (though my laptop doesn't support it for some reason) and my current one has AddonChat that's some Java thing

Wait a minute, I see now. I click forum and then there's a link, so what you need to do is change the link the "Forum" button goes to to the link of your forum. ;)

That would work out well.

Did you get the PM?

So we'll still post in here too, of course.

I'm going to start making the main character as soon as I know what it is. :P If no one else wants to do it.
I'll also make a sort of boss-creature, also. That should be easy.
Maybe even a castle, if it's kind of like a Zelda game.

Still waiting to see what davy has in mind for it all. :)

Ok, all this gamemake idea is very cool and it's very impressive what you can do all together just starting from zero...

BUT

As other projects that users tryed to finish and they died... it's not the correct way. For example, there was a project called "Anim8or Movie" ( or something like that ) which ofcourse wasn't finished ( or better to say actually wasn't even started). And that's becouse they wasn't organized  well. Just as example, one thing they was doing is to try find out which title for the movie will fit better and what the LOGO should looks like, but all these while they still even didn't know what movie they whant to do, what story, what ...everything :P About the models: you should decide what you need and then ask it from some users, for example "the main caracter is man/girl/dog/bug :D ( big, small, cartoony, super-dooper :D ) and then every user will create something and there will be a big range of choice ( just imagine that for example for one good enough model you would spend one hour, but if in this one hour at the same time 10-15 people are doing one model each you will have 10 different models in time in which one person whould make only one). And all this only when everybody know what exactly to do. So, in summary, it must be declared what exactly is going on here, what's the story, who's the caracter, what he/she must do, what can do ( for example one knight fights some creations and try to get a magic stone which is on the last level in the castle :P :P )Definitly it's very cool idea and it would be shame if it'll "die" .

Oh I was a part of the Anim8or Movie Project! It was fun while it lasted... RIP 2000-something However I think maybe I should step out into a more post-production area of this project, seeing as how I have had nothing to do with the current progress of the project.
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 30, 2010, 06:42:57 pm
Yea Gyperboloid I see what you mean. I'll try to think of a better good, clear idea of what the game is about (like what the character looks like, etc) and I'll post it on my forums.
Title: Re: New game
Post by: Gyperboloid on August 31, 2010, 08:09:52 am
So, you gonna leave this? Actually, i was thinking, while there was many users who started on project, these was always different projects by different people. I meen why not to create all the projects in the same topic, something like the challenges are. So all the Anim8ors who want to participate just know everytime when and where something is on.

For the idea of the game: I think even if you have decided what it will be, during the discussion with other people, sometimes it  will be lead to a different result, idea, maybe even better than the first one. So, the point is to be very productive and not just beat about the bush :D The FIRST FIRST thing that you must decide about is what kind of game it will be: something about magic with castles, knights, creations ( like you started i think ) or something about cars like simple races and crashes or something A LA Mario with cartoony caracters some apples and stars :D ? And everybody can ( must ) suggest something and not to wait all be done by one, becouse again if everybody will give an idea the range of choice will be bigger and things will move faster. And if the project will move constantly other users from the Cre8or forum will be glad to help. Why not, we are all one big 8 family :D The majority is power ;D

You have some good points there, Gyperboloid. :)

I think he's working on just that, actually. You should drop by the forums and offer your input since you seem to have a lot of it. ;)
Also, is it just me or has cooldude disappeared from this? :P
Title: Re: New game
Post by: davygravy123 on August 31, 2010, 07:31:35 pm
well I was thinking it was going to be a midevil adventure game, some monsters have magic powers, and the character used a sword.

Yea exactly what I was thinking. I definitely need suggestions for the game because only a very little amount of people are posting models they made, which is really helpful believe it or not, so I can tell the people to make changes if needed. It does make the game be done quicker and make things move faster.
