Title: [ COMPLETE ] Challenge #18: Bloop, bloop bloop?
Post by: Raxx on May 31, 2010, 08:53:09 pm

Bloop?

Falling back to the first suggestion on the suggestions list: make any underwater scene! Can have fish, no fish, machines, no machines, plants, no plants, or anything everything or nothing, so long as it's underwater! The only stipulation is that the camera must be underwater. What water is up to you!

Enjoy! But remember the challenge rules and post your progress, c&c, and/or final renders in this topic.

Deadline: Now Voting

What will be judged:
This challenge will have a public poll. Vote for the best still render.

I'll take up the challenge! It fits in with a part of my underwater bit that I have yet to develop... Thanks, Raxxy!

What about aquariums?
Title: Re: Challenge #18: Bloop, bloop bloop?
Post by: 3Dgeek11 on June 01, 2010, 02:29:53 pm
I'm sure aquariums count as underwater, but it's Raxx's challenge. ;)

And and and... will YOU turn out, Geek?

I hope so. :P

I have a few ideas 'bubbling' around in my head. ;)

What about aquariums?

So long as the camera is underwater inside the aquarium, it's fine.

Yah, could be in the glass of water, for that matter.... or, the blender?  ;)

I remember way back, when AnimAnon held the first contest... "Strange Worlds"... Kreator made a really cool under the sea video set to Nutcracker music.  Kreator, you still have that around for any inspiration?

Anyway, below the bare beginnings of a few of my critters in the works...

- Bug-Eyed Fish (based off a pic of a weird fish I saw once in some deep-sea images)

- Crab (sort of speaks for itself) - shell taking shape.

hmm, does the camera have to be in water the whole time? can it maybe start off following an object that falls into the water? im planning an animatioin :)

Considering that it's a still render that's gonna be judged, an animation is out of the bounds of the contest so you're free to do whatever you want. If you want to submit a frame of that animation as the still render, it'll have to be a frame with the camera underwater.

Never figured there'd be that many questions about it, I thought "the camera must be underwater" was a pretty simple statement ;)

lol i've never seen so many fishy puns in one place haha!

looks like its gonna be a good turnout which means I will at least give this one a good think, hopefully will join in!

And when you say "the camera has to be under the water" what if the water was going the other way... can you be underneath water that is flowing upwards???

hehehe just trying to stir things up a bit

wait a minute... nowhere did it say "still"... in fact, the use of the term "scene" implied it would be rendered with a distinct hint of "animation" involved, as I read it.

If it's a "still", I'm going to withdraw, because my whole premise is based on animation.

Sorry, folks.

Gotcha, Kevin.  I don't recall even seeing that bit in the original  message... I'm with you on the 'tude. I've watched and waited for an animation-based competition and thought for sure I'd finally got wind of one...

Looking great, ADSohr. :D

I've been making some things for someone's site, to help out with designing, since I'm kind of a designer there, so I haven't had time to work on my fish thing, but I'll certainly give it my best go to enter. :)

Nice work on the fish ADSohr! I'll be doing an aquarium-based render as well :)

Good work baxter, way to tie this into the current events ;) I think the oil could do with a little more work though, but good job otherwise. Are you going to finish the scene up?

No sense in getting all irritable on my part... I apologize for that.

I'm refocusing and trying to come up with something fishy in any case.

Beautiful render, benzjie! :D I hope it gets accepted. I don't see any of the challenges saying you have to RENDER in Anim8or, except for the ART Glasses challenge. ;) So it should be okay.

:)

I don't see the big controversy over animation challenges.  In fact, my last challenge explicitly said you could enter an animation!  Sadly none of you fella's entered.  Many times we do simply stick to still renders, and that's simply because the time constraint makes animation a difficult art to perfect in that time period.  Perhaps if you asked nicely though you'd see more animation challenges!

benzjie that's an amazing jellyfish, I seem to remember you making a similar one before?  Or is that the same one?
Great stuff by everyone that's entered so far though, I hope for a nice turnout!

I am put in my place yet again... I'm very sorry about that, hihosilver... you're right, and my fault is doubly bad as I didn't get far in working on my animated part of the "pig" contest... I'm thinking, yes, it's definitely time to just shut up and design.... :(

No worries mate!  That's the difficult part about these shorter time-lined competitions.  Perhaps I'll think about running a slightly longer challenge later for animation!

At the risk of running up a nightmare idea.... :P  What if each contest had two divisions? Still and Animated?

Also, I had mentioned elsewhere an idea... well, maybe it's best put in another area... so will do that.

Raxx: Why don't you extend the deadline a few more days? Only 2 people have finished their render so far, and the deadline is in 12ish hours.
I could probably get mine done if I had a couple of days..

The main element must be water (hence "underwater").

Alright, voting started! I added any contestants whose renders that could be argued as complete. Considering that there was nothing stating that Anim8or had to be used as the renderer, benzjie's entry is valid. Good luck to the winners!
