Title: Lighting Effects
Post by: spicy on March 11, 2008, 07:23:49 am
Hello. Say I wanted to make a Lightsaber (From Star Wars) and I wanted the glow on the light saber when it moved and stood still. How would I do that?

Here's a great tutorial to follow. (http://www.anim8or.com/tutorials/from_users/lighting_tutorial/Lighting.htm)
It isn't specifically on lightsabers, but the concepts can be easily used to make one.

The tutorial hihosilver recommended is great if you want to make a nice scene; however, I'm afraid it won't help you if you plan to make an animation - you would have to change the glow filter position thousand times...

If you need a glow effect in animation, I recommend making a coloured plane with high emissive value and transmap so it will fade to transparent from center to the borders - then attach the plane to the lightsaber - and it's done ;D

EDIT - I've searched the old forum and I believe this is exactly what you need:

I agree with Kubajzz, but you will have to make sure the plane is always perpendicular to the camera, no matter what the orientation of the sabre.
