Title: Bolt
Post by: ADSohr on April 16, 2010, 11:06:18 pm
Ok, I'm a little obsesed, but here is my inspiration for 3D anim8ing.  ::)

Fairly simple mesh, but it's a pain to make the letters. I couldn't find a good "brushed metal" texture, which would have added alot to making it look better.

Any Ideas on how to make it look more like the second image?

I once used a env. map to create this kind of gold look. I used a standard cube map and made it gold/yellow with a paint program and used it as a env.map.

The main difference I can see between the medallions is that the detail on the lower one appears to be stamped into the surface, whereas yours appears flat or slightly raised.  Aside from fully modelling the inset text (always the best option if render quality is what you want) you might be able to get a reasonable result at emulating this using a bump map.  Blurring the edges of the main detail on the bump map should provide the slightly 'puffy' effect on the medallion's surface, which is what makes the detail appear stamped rather than moulded or engraved.  The brushed surface and slight surface irregularities that make the second image seem so real should also be able to be emulated by texturing the bump map.

Actually watching the movie there is a scene with a similer tag without the "Walt Disney" and "pictures" text, and the "BOLT" letters are raised.

If I show a wire it would be very hard to see what is going on because the polies are so dense, but I did model the text. Like I said in my earlier post, I attempted to find a brushed metal texture image so I could make the bumpmap for this, but there was nothing even similer to the effect on the second tag.

My mistake, it looks like the text is depressed rather than raised due to the lighting I think (the ring at the top has a bright highlight on the top, so since there are bright highlights under the "BOLT" lettering and shadows above it looks like the text is depressed).  Can't help much with the brushed texture, other than to suggest making it yourself using 2D software (ie Illustrator, Gimp etc.)  It might even be possible to create the bumpmap texture directly from the second image, airbrushing out the text, converting to monochrome and fiddling with the brightness and contrast.

Well, I think there must be two distinct Bolt tags made by Disney... the one portrayed originally here is one that is portrayed all across the internet, and is is obviously recessed... I did some searching as I couldn't remember if the movie had a raised one in it... and I can't find a pic of that one.

Personally, I do like the recessed/depressed one's look since it does reflect the "engraved" style that dog tags tend to have.

Yes, there are definitely two different tags, one for promotion, and one for use in the movie.

I don't know, it is quite possible I'm wrong. It may be recessed.

Super easy fix!  ;D
