Challenge #15: ...and then there was light.

Another anim8or challenge: ..and then there was light.

The challenge you will have to do the lighting for a still render. It can be any kind of scene but only the lighting matters. You are allowed to use a little postproduction. But to stop people from photoshopping everything, you will have to add a screenshot of you scene, in which the light setup can be seen.
Look here for some tips and tricks about lighting in anim8or: Anim8or Lighting (http://anim8or.com/tutorials/from_users/lighting_tutorial/Lighting.htm)
Try being creative! ;)

Have fun, keep in mind the challenge rules (http://www.anim8or.com/smf/index.php?topic=2096.0) and post your progress, c&c, and/or final renders in this topic.

Deadline: 2 weeks (April 5th)

What will be judged:
This challenge will have a public poll. Vote for the still render with the best lighting.

Nice challenge floyd! I'll have to think of something good to light ;) Good luck everyone!

Awesome, I already have a model I've been wanting to try some fancy lighting on for a bit. Mind you i still have to finish it.

(Gotta give credit to Mills here, cus it was his dragon that really inspired the design of this thing!)

I'm definitely going to post a render. Have a few good ideas. This is one challenge that won't need much modeling, but scene placement and lighting.

@Navek: Looking good so far. =]

I appreciate the credit, Navek, but really not necessary! I look forward to seeing how your image turns out.

Floyd's illustration pic reminds me a lot of one of my gallery images, http://www.anim8or.com/gallery/gallery18/image5.html (http://www.anim8or.com/gallery/gallery18/image5.html) (second image on the page, obviously.)

Will see if I have time to come up with a new one!

Ah, those are the exact images I thought of when I saw this challenge up Mills!  I hadn't realized you had created them, well done!  It sounds like we have some strong competition in our midst!

funny it's same image i had in mind when starting this challenge, mills.
I just couldn't remember where i saw it  ;D

Just a quick thought, I'm assuming that we can't add in things like lens flares etc. in post production because this is just supposed to be Anim8or lighting right?
Title: Re: Challenge #15: ...and then there was light.
Post by: $imon on March 23, 2010, 04:51:16 pm
Navek: I imagine post-production is allowed to a certain extent... it's really up to floyd to answer that question though...

In any case I would avoid using lens flares unless you have a bright lightsource just outside the image to add photorealism ;) In (most) other cases I would not recommend it, since it easily looks fake and overdone.

Thanks for the advice $imon, I'll keep it in mind (I'll post the post production test that brought on the question) and while I'm here i might as well post a progress render too.

Post by: floyd86 on March 24, 2010, 07:39:33 am
yeh postproduction.... you are allowed to use some of it, for little things like lens flares/AO passes. Just to make sure this isn't going to be a photoshopping contest, you will have to add a screenshot of your scene, in which you can clearly see the light setup.

Post by: Tof on March 28, 2010, 06:00:18 pm
Well, really no time to play with anim8or but I try to make something with this model I made for a previous challenge... And I'll sleep another day! I start with this, I hope it will not be my final entry (2 local lights + emissive material for the lamp, one infinite light to illuminate the glow, render with the scanline, the base of the lamp cast shadows)
Title: Re: Challenge #15: ...and then there was light.
Post by: Tof on March 29, 2010, 04:44:21 pm
A new render with other settings and some adds...I think this one is a little better, can you say me what you think?
Title: Re: Challenge #15: ...and then there was light.
Post by: $imon on March 29, 2010, 05:09:19 pm
Looks good, Tof! The only thing I would add is secondary lighting (light bouncing off the floor creating shadows on the back part of the lamp, specifically under the lamp), the best way to go about that is making an Ambient Occlusion render and add that in a post-production program.

Its looking really good though, I like the intensity of the light coming off the lamp.

Here's what I have so far. I'm having a bit of trouble with getting the shadows to blend well with the lights on the ground. Any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. :)
Title: Re: Challenge #15: ...and then there was light.
Post by: $imon on March 30, 2010, 02:12:46 pm
3Dgeek; what do you mean blending it with the ground? Maybe what can help is what I advised Tof; adding an AO layer to it.

I made a quick render too, just to enter something! A notary lamp!

Small contrast correction in photoshop.

light setup: one local + one spotlight in the lamp itself,
two spotlights shining through a moon-shaped hole in a mesh to create the 'reflection of light' under the lamp.

edit; See next page for updates!

Nice start everyone!
Here are my final render and my printscreen (cameraview complete, front view to show lights and camera, AO pass, and the one shot render color - shadows - highlights).
There are two after effects:
first: blending the color render and the AO
second: a little gausian blur to make everything smoother
Now only time for my (real) work to the deadline...Good luck to all

Hello, forum. Nice work. I've just seen this post a couple of hours ago, and it is very interesting. I love lens flares, very usefull. But I never thought to make one with Anim8or. So, I used a model I started to build a couple of days ago, for a commercial. It is not finished yet, but I'll use it for this challenge.

I must say I only used anim8or, no photoshop, no nothing. For the lensflare I used several shapes to reflect the light, setting transparency to 0% and specular to maximum 3.2, I parented the light to the camera, and use face target to the light object, for facing the camera always, no matter the position.

I made six different materials for the lens flare.
you have some screen-shots to see how it works. The last image is tha same lensflare, with the materials transparency set at 0.23 to see the shapes I used, and rendered with Scanline. The finished image is rendered with AO, Global internsity: 0.310, ambient intensity 2.1.

Post by: hihosilver on April 01, 2010, 02:30:08 am
Well done Daniel!  That's a fantastic lens flare you achieved.  If you turned up the AA settings a bit on your final render it would get rid of some of the grain which would be nice, but good stuff.
Title: Re: Challenge #15: ...and then there was light.
Post by: daniel99 on April 01, 2010, 02:31:58 am
Yes, I know. Thanks a lot. But I'm just crazy about this noise effect. Most of the people hate it, but this is same as film grain. So, I really enjoy it :)
Title: Re: Challenge #15: ...and then there was light.
Post by: $imon on April 01, 2010, 04:23:46 am
Yes very nice work on the lens flare! The best one I've seen in anim8or! I wish you had improved the lighting in the rest of the scene a bit to match it thought, like turning the other headlight on and the overall lighting on the bus.

Good job though! Really like it!

As I stated before though, a lens flare can get quite inappropriate in a scene, in your case it might just be too big/bright to serve the image well.
Title: Re: Challenge #15: ...and then there was light.
Post by: rellik420 on April 01, 2010, 06:07:53 am
you need to do something with the other headlight. i would vote for you to win just because u achieved a lens flare without any after effects. it really does look good. but like simon said u really need to finish the scene so it will look right.

Good job everybody so far!

Here is my quick entry, a simple caustics effect. I will try to create a more complex scene with better lighting...

The image was done entirely in Anim8or, no post-production or textures (except for a bumpmap on the floor...).

I used only 3 spotlights:
One is just below the sphere to create the caustics effect.
Two lights were used to light up the scene and create the soft blue-colored shadow. These 2 lights have the same position and orientation, one of them is yellow and the other one is blue. The blue and yellow light create a white light when combined together, but only the yellow light casts a shadow, which makes the shadow appear blue.

Good work,m Tof, and Kubajzz! I like that little ball, but I keep seeing this round dome in everyones' lighting close-up thing, and wondering why you do that and how..?

Anyway,

My final:

OR.....
My APRIL FOOLS to everyone here at the Anim8or community! ;)

I'm still working on mine. I scrapped the idea of primitives, (even though they look cool) and started work on a haunted house. I'm sure I'll get it done within the time limit.
Nothing to show yet, but there will be. =]

It's sort of universal placeholder if you do not want (or do not need) to model a full background/environment. You could only use a ground plane, but the end of the plane would most likely be visible which might not look good. If you add "walls", the problem is solved.

I usually make an L-shaped spline and lathe it to create sort of half-cylinder with a rounded bottom edge.

I like your image btw :P ;D

Ah, okay. I get it now. It'd be helpful to me, I think.

I've gotten a lot done in mine. Here's it's current state.
I think I'll tweak with the lighting and models a bit more, and then it'll be a final. :)

Also, if anyone has any suggestions about how to make the ghosts "glow" better, then please tell me!

First, I wanted it to be only one headlight on, but...as you wish :)

Awesome work everyone!
Daniel; looking better with the other headlight ;) The vehicle could use an ambient occlusion pass maybe, instead of the hard shadows i see under the windshield wipers. The global light is coming mostly from the back (where the sun goes down) so in the front there will only be environmental lighting.

I can understand if you don't want to work on it anymore though.. its looking great already!

3DGeek, WOW! GREAT IMAGE! .. oh wait.. oh yes its a great image :D For the ghosts.. since their material is comparable with smoke, you would see that in the middle they are brighter, on the edge less bright, where the ghost is thicker, there is more 'smoke' so the color is whiter, on the edge you can see right through it. I'm not sure how you could achieve that in anim8or though.

I'm rendering a new version of my entry at the moment.. so stay tuned for that!

I've re-rendered it, and yes, the light is placed from behind, and amb. light is very low, because in the sky scene is almost dark. It has an occlusion pass, but only 30%. I tried to use more and it doen't look right.

My render is done, here is a newer version of my lamp.
Simple three-point lighting.

625 AA samples, rendering took a few hours.

Added a little glow to the highlights in photoshop.

@$imon: I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean. I don't get if you're talking about my render, or what it should look like?

Basically, if I understand right, I need to make it to where you can't see through the edges, but still be transparent, and still be more solid in the middle?

EDIT: I re-read it and I think I get it. Maybe by using the Shell tool?

Thanks, though. =]

Title: Re: Challenge #15: ...and then there was light.
Post by: Mills on April 02, 2010, 06:47:36 pm
3Dgeek: There are two fairly straightforward techniques you could try get some glow in your ghosts:
1) Create a local light and parent it to the ghost object, ensuring it is at the centre (ie remove the default Y+200 offset). Make the light very local (start: 5, end: 500 - depending on your object size). Then make your ghost object material two sided. Set the front to 0.0 visibility, and the back to a high specular value (1) and somewhat visible (0.4), with a low rough value (around 4). The light will cause bright specular highlighting across the far surfaces of the ghost object, and the edges will be less lit, creating the effect of a glowing centre. This has the great advantage of your ghosts actually casting a glow on any objects they fly near.
2) Create a single flat plane (a 1x1x1 cube and delete four points). Create an image of a gradient white circle on a black background (sample attached), use this as a transmap on a new texture with a strong glow (in whatever colour you require, white or blueish-white). Add this as a child of your ghost, and adjust it to be slightly larger than the ghost object. You may need to push this slightly behind your ghost object to avoid unsightly overlaps between semi-transparent objects. If you set this new object to be facing the camera, it will keep itself aligned in the scene and work even if you move the ghosts around.
Here's a very crude preview using both techniques:

Nice work everyone so far. This is my final entry, my aim was to keep it 'on topic', hence the unfinished clay look is very deliberate. I'd like to do a load of tweaking, but I know I won't have the time before the deadline so figure it's best to just post it now. This is straight out of v.95 scanline, no post work whatsoever. Not sure what you can see from the setup screenshot, but have included it anyway to be compliant.

Thank you so much, Mills!  :D That helped a lot. I used the first method. It worked perfectly.

Also, your render is very nice. Pleasant. =]

Attached is my final render. There was no post-production except for my "logo".
But I attached the lighting setup, also. To show it, since I'm supposed to. Also, if you're wondering how it's so dark even though there's no explanation in my image, I used fog.

Hope it gets voted for. :D

Arik; that's a real shame! I hope you can join in next time again!

Mills; Very nice render, the lighting is straight forward but glad to see you made it as accurate as possible.
I made a similar image a long time ago:
http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/6783/lighttest.jpg
I like your added dust particles though! it looks really cool.

3Dgeek; I think Mills answered your question better than I ever could ;)
Nice render you made though. If I may suggest something before the deadline arrives, if you make a night-scene and the render comes out too dark, but you don't know where you can get more light from, it is suggested  you use a blue/gray-tint light to light up the background of the scene, and in this case the candle would light up the front of the scene with yellow-ish light. The contrast will still make it show like it is night, but your models etc. are better visible.
Example;
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=121&t=679168

Good work though guys!
Good luck in voting ;)

Double post, sorry.

I tweaked with it as $imon said (lol Simon says, anyone?) and came out with a better render IMO.
I attached the new lighting setup even though there's not much difference.

EDIT: By the way, for those of you who might (possibly) wonder, my laptop's keys are modeled, not textured. And this Final render, I forgot to mention, it wasn't edited except for the logo. Just like the last one. ;) [/EDIT]

If I don't post a new render before the deadline, (which is unlikely) this is my final.

Haha, yes, I was unsure at first, too.

I'm wondering something about my final render up there... It seems there are no shadows.. Even though I enabled shadows before rendering... Hmm.
Any ideas?

EDIT: Heh, the shadows were only set to receive, not cast. Fixed. But now the renders take a LONG time even on an un-antialiased scanline render... And it takes the fog away! I think I'll leave it as it is above, for now.

My entry is called "Caught In The Act".  It is my fantasy of actually catching the little buggers.  You know what I am talking about...Little things missing, things rearranged...No real way to explain how only your left socks go missing... Anyway, the entry is supposed to be the instant the light is switched on.

There are five lights in the scene:
2 outside the blinds to simulate the early morning sunshine
1 local light inside the light fixture
1 spot pointing down from the light fixture
1 spot pointing up from the light fixture.

Well, let's see... I was working on a vaguely similar type of scene some time ago, on the backburner like many others... R'Lyeh is a sunken city of fantastical, outlandish, alien nature somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, per early 1900s sci-fi and horror author H.P. Lovecraft.

So, I had to ask.  The odd symbols and things could be attributed to the Lovecraft storylines.

Ahh, I have heard of Lovecraft, not a lot mind you but the name rings a bell. The symbols are being used in the other project I mentioned and originated from an idle mind during a french class and ended up all over my worksheet. As for the image as a whole, its been bouncing around my mind for awhile now and i needed a way to represent it visually (anim8or is really a lifesaver for these things) rather then with words.

wow, great job guys! mills, I was just wondering, how do you add those particles? I have no clue how you do it, and you've used it in an image before, in your 'stained glass window' image. can you say how you made it?

Congratulations to all for your amazing entries (the entry of Daniel99, one of my prefered, gets only 1 vote!?) and thank you for my 3rd place partaged wit NickE, the great plugin writer (I especially like Nicke's mesh2mesh plugin!)
See you all in a next challenge, but before, I'm working on a special project...coming (not so) soon.

Hi everyone. Congratulations to floyd! Clearly a last minute entry is the way to do it ;)
Have been without internet for nearly two weeks now, so I missed the voting entirely, but it's fairly obvious it wouldn't have affected the outcome.

cheatsguy: it's a technique i've used a lot, and it's fairly simple to do. Essentially just a semi-transparent object matched to the shape of the window, which doesn't cast or receive shadows. I think it worked slightly better in the stained glass window because the window shape was more complex and so created more variation in the image. I'll see if I can put together a short tutorial if people are interested. It's not disimilar to the 'light cones' outlined in the last issue of DotAN8 e-zine. It was slightly more complex to produce in this image, though, because of the chair.

Looking forward to the next contest!

Thanks mills.

I actually had my own way of doing this: i would make an object, 0 everything except a emissive of .1 and white color. I actually used it in an image before.
