Challenge #12:Super-Duper Simple Machine

Example of a simple machine (Lever)!

Welcome to our 12th challenge! Your goal for the next two weeks is to make a simple machine that does something monumental, innovative, out-of-the-world, or just plain crazy!

A simple machine performs one of these functions:

You can only use one type of simple machine in this still render, and naturally it needs to be the simple machine that's doing the monumental work.

Deadline: 2 weeks (Completed)

What will be judged:
This challenge will have a public poll. Vote for the best still render.

Remember the challenge rules (http://www.anim8or.com/smf/index.php?topic=2096.0) and post your progress, c&c, and/or final renders in this topic.

The Winner!

Tof

I will be on a holiday so I won't be able to make anything. A very shame, because it sounds like an interesting topic! I think I would make sliced bread ;)

Good luck to everyone participating!

Here is my progress for this challenge.
I try to make a Noria. modelling and UVMapping of the weehl are quite finiched (just to add a few parts and adjust them). Now modelling the base, and later, to texture it and add an environnement (add water will be difficult I think, but I'll try it!) I hope to see a lot of other projects, but with the holidays, a lot of anim8ors are busy...(for me, it is the only time where I can play with anim8or)

This is an interesting topic. I'll give this a try... after my last day of finals tom. Do we need to put up WIPs? Others seem to put it so I'm just wondering.

Please post your progress as you do it. You won't be disqualified if you just put up your final at the end, but there's less exposure and excitement for the challenge if no one shows that they're trying!

No Tof, there is nothing wrong with your machine.  There seems to be a problem with the forum.  Others have already mentioned that elsewhere.  You need to insert your image, i suppose.  All machines may not allow that, however.

How do you insert an image
Title: Re: Challenge #12: Super-Duper Simple Machine

I think what Indian8or means is to upload an image to an image-hosting site (such as ImageShack or PhotoBucket) and then add the image to your post using the [img] tags (you can click the "Insert Image" button above the text window when posting a message...)

I don't usually save WiP stuff so usually it's just a random render during the process. I honestly forget to save WiP because I get so engrossed in working that I forget to stop and save a quick render. lol

Here's how the setting for my entry looks so far, a kitchen(or the cupboard side):
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y205/Axel17/Extra/th_Kitchen_Test.jpg) (http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y205/Axel17/Extra/?action=view&current=Kitchen_Test.jpg)

The simplemachine planned to be used is a pulley. Working on that at the moment.

EDIT: Well here's a screen of the isolated Pulley doing the work and the character using it. The work being done is lifting the character in the attempt to reach the cookie jar on the top shelf of the kitchen.

My picture on photobucket, I hope it works, it's first time I try this...
If it works:
- modelling in anim8or
- UV mapping in Lithunwrap
- adding grass and drops with Nicke's plugin (Mesh2Mesh)
- UV map painting with Artweaver
- Ajusting the materials to fit the best with the backgroung (photo of Holidays in France, Luberon...) - Render in Anim8or (applying the advices of Kubajz to cut down the render times, it has taken only 3 hours)
- Adding blur with aniM!or and Artweaver (Depht channel - Image blending)

Well here's what I have so far. I'll tweak it a bit more when i get back from school tom before posting my final one hopefully in time for the deadline ^^

Great progress Janro! I love the concept and nice use of rigging :)

Tof, very well done! The machine looks more complicated than it actually is ;)

By the way, you have to put the individual images in the IMG tags rather than the link to the album if you want them to display on this page. I believe photobucket has the code all set up in a drop down menu when you go to your link, Tof

Thank you Raxx, for the comments and for the tip over Photobucket...and I have discover I can modify or remove my messages on the forum (Haha ;D).
Hey, my machine is not complicated, it's only a wehl, and it simply turns with the stream of the river... ;)
Janro, nice work and super idea, it seems like you have a nice humor!
And, a last thing, where is Headwax's work?

Just letting you know...the contest will end in 14.5 hours! (midnight Eastern time). If you posted your final entry before and it's lost in the attachment errors, please post it again from a third party host!

Here's the final (at least in time for the deadline) render. Click for full-view.

(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y205/Axel17/Extra/th_AnythingforaCookie.jpg) (http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y205/Axel17/Extra/?action=view&current=AnythingforaCookie.jpg)

Quick [extra] Info:
-Render Time: 30 Mins (approx.)
-Use of AmbientOccluder
-Window scenery taken in Banaue Rice Terraces.
Will most likely fix up some errors sometime, like the thickness of the rope changing. I only realized it after rendering this scene. LOL

I like you're render Tof. It may be a simple machine, but I'm amazed at the amount of detail in the grass, texture and even the water droplets dripping off the machine ^^

"but the color of render is for be IN DARK like be?

Hello Neirao, I'm glad that you like my (big piece of) work, thank you.
For the color, on my monitor, the lighting of my render looks +/- like I wanted (autumn cloudy day with some sun rays, on my computer, the image you made seems like a sunny summer day 8))
But on the computer of my brother, it's really too dark...(same screen settings, brightness 50%, contrast 50%, RGB Auto)
Can the other viewers say how they see my final render? (and what are the settings they use for the monitor)

hi tof,
i use, resolution: 1024 x 768 pixels
color: 32 bits

here your previous render(final only) appears very, very dark.
i dont can see nothing..

The bright version looks better on my screen, although it might be a little bit too bright IMO. I would make it something in between...

Great image by the way!

So, here is my final render ("Between")

Now I'm going to bed because tomorow I have a lot of work...and I think no more time for anim8or the next weeks (but for voting, yes).
Thank you Raxx for this challenge, it was pleasant and I have learnt a lot of new things.
Salutation to everybody, I hope to come back for a new challenge as soon as possible.

I preferred the first image, looked a lot more... sunshiney.
The new one looks too grey to me now.
Title: Re: Challenge #12: Super-Duper Simple Machine
Post by: Raxx on January 12, 2010, 12:27:53 am
Hm, it was too dark on my PC monitor but on my laptop screen it looked a lot lighter. Same with the new set, though on my PC monitor your last render seems a little greyed out. Perhaps fiddling with the contrast and saturation would help. I actually prefer neirao's brighter version on both screens. But I'm glad you enjoyed the challenge Tof ;)

I like your work Janro, though it doesn't look like he'll succeed in getting the cookie jar!

The competition has now ended! Please vote on your favorite entry!

Thanks. He'll need to find another way lol. This is actually the first time I really played around with material settings and I kinda liked how it turned out.

This was a fun one! I really enjoyed doing it. :D

Congratulations Janro for your entry, it is a great work (more creative than my one and your charachter looks cool). I hope to see other of your works here (this one was the first?)

Congrats Tof! ^_^ I've been using anim8or for a while so it's technically not my first. But it's the first I've shown here :)
