Title: Mapping multiple side with textures
Post by: Queen Kittan on February 19, 2008, 05:21:51 pm
This is really frustrating. When i apply a texture to an object, it will be fine on one side, but then "stretched" on another, i.e. it takes one slice and expands it. I want to select multiple sides and give them different texture mappings entirely... but it won't let me! The UV thing only works for the whole object which is no use at all... I want faces to have independant properties from one another... what do I do?

this takes a while but it is the only way i can think of for your problem you have to go to face edit mode and UV each individual face by selecting the face and clicking the UV button

if it's a square it's easy, but with a circle it might take a while, mabye this is a feature to suggest? the choice for uv mapping to either:

1. have this texture mapped onto all faces as a whole picture

or

2. have it applied to all faces seperately facing the same direction of the face

You should be able to select separate faces or groups of faces and use the UV tool on them.  It's strange that you can't.

To stop this from happening you can do two thing:
-The easy one: Select the objects/faces you want to texture and hit the apply button of the texture, now unselect it the the object/face will be texture even everywhere. The problem with this is that you cant move/scale the texture afterwards like with UV. It often gives a ugly result but somethings it will do.
-The harder one: Download an UV-map program like roadkill or UV-mapper, export your model, map it in the UV-mapper. Then texture it in your favorite paint program. This will give you the best result, but might be hard and cost some time doing it.

or..select the faces you want textured...detach faces.......uv map them....build > join solids>merge points

Can I do this without moving anything about?

yes..once you have detached the faces ...go into object mode......now hide the objects you dont need in the scene, uv map the detached faces . When you're done...show all objects again en join solids etc.  Don't move your object around....use the green arc rotate tool
