Alright so I had some time this morning and made this in anim8or.. Just minor photoshop adjustments.
I wanted to make it look painterly.
Hope you like it!

Here is the scene setup:

Very nice, nearly perfect.
A couple of complaints
1) the cherry seems a little too shiney. It looks like it's made of glass or polished ceramic.
2) there is a perfectly straight, horizontal line at the top of the stem that is quite distracting. Perhaps a little harsh a criticism, but it would look better from a slightly different angle, or if it was broken into 2 polys and bent slightly.
Still, a beautiful piece of work!

Hah, nitpicker! Too critical an eye often mistakes what should be as what shouldn't be. I remember thinking "water doesn't look that way", but then I go out to the lake half a mile away and think, "well gee, so it does".
Looks fine to me. Almost commented about the bump map on the cherry being too strong but looking at photos of cherries it seems about right. Good job, I like the atmosphere.

I love it :D
If you have some time again, could you give us/me the light settings, just curious ;)
-
Thanks guys!
Dosser; looking at reference images, i actually think its not shiny enough! they really are quite the reflective fruits :| You're right about the stem though, I didn't take too much time modeling, I just wanted to get the basic shapes done and work a bit more on the rendering.
Raxx; I have the same problem usually looking too long at a picture I'm making. I'm glad I didn't get it too wrong haha.
Jehovahenker: Thanks, I'm glad you like it! Giving all the light settings would be a bit much maybe, but I will give you a global insight :P
I have three spotlights lighting up the cherry and the floor around it, with a very soft shadow (at 100%), that are all the lights that cast shadows in the scene. two from one side, one from a different angle.
Three colored spotlights are aiming at the bottom of the wall in the back to get a mood going. Then there is a blue directional light to give some backlight on the cherry's left side. And a directional light for the highlight on the bottom.
I think that was all the lighting :) The floor has a bump and reflects about 80%..
Thanks again! Glad you like it.

Bit of dew might make it look "real" $imon....
-
Awesome, very atmospheric, not much to say in the way of criticism :).
-
good to see you making something classy for a change :)
beautiful cherry, i I was going to come back as a cherry, well....
my crit is the composition
cherry smack bang in middle, is balanced by the sig but...
maybe the signature is out of place, maybe vertical japponaise style?
but then the composition is no longer balnced ;)
it follows it needs mt fuji and some cherry trees ... (just kidding)
-
kreator: I'm not going for the most realistic cherry, but it would be a good idea to break up the surface a bit!
Joe: thanks so much :)
headwax: I never make classy things? :O haha..
Good tip, that's where my lessons Japanese come in handy:

Good god man... I mean really haha
Where have you been for so long! I've been missing your work.
This is really a beautiful piece, your lighting is amazing!
It does irritate me occasionally when people always comment on the "realism" on a piece. The point of art isn't always realism, most of the time it's beauty/intrigue/intensity, things like that.
This is beautiful mate!

hah :) much better, I'm impressed you spelt your name right !

I couldn't agree more! With images like these, I believe it's a case of "if it looks right, it is right". My first impressions were:
1) "Wow, $imon's done it again, that's just beautiful!"
2) "The Photoshopped painted effect works quite well for this image, kinda tones down the harshness of the composition"
As I looked more closely:
3) "I am distracted by the cherry surface, maybe too bumpy? Been in the fridge too long?"
I have not compared it to real cherry photos, just allowed the image to speak for itself. My impression (based on absolutely no research) is the the cherry could be smoother, and as Kreator said a drop of dew on the cherry, and perhaps another on the bench top, would be the "cherry on top" of this image (sorry, apologies for the atrocious pun!) All that aside, a beautiful piece of work $imon!

hihosilver: I'm sorry but I've been busy all summer, my girlfriend is over so not much time for art :P in the near future I will have time again!
I can see how it might look I'm going for realism, but I figured I would say I'm going for a painterly look to not have to be too realistic.
Headwax: seems like you used the same 'make my name in japanese'-generator as i did ;)
ensoniq: thanks for the comments! I agree with the harshness, I wanted to keep it a bit more empty. The cherry's surface is surprisingly enough really like that, I thought it would be smoother as well.
Adding dew would make the piece look too crowded, and it would look out of place i think in an environment that isnt outside.. thats just the artists opinion ;)
Thanks for the comments all!

Hi simon! Long time since we last spoke...;)
I absolutly love your new work! The ambience of the pictures is great (no that I would expect anything less of you ;)).
I really like the textures too, they fit perfectly.
Mind sharing us the passes you used for this one (the non-photoshopped passes)....
keep it going and we have to talk some time again...

Heh, no worries I know exactly what you mean. After all, what have I produced this summer? Now that the girlfriend's off to college I should be producing more art once I get my computer back.
