Title: ART raytracer reflections
Post by: Jehovahenker on August 25, 2009, 03:39:26 am
I would like to have a reflective floor in my kitchen I'm working on, but I still don't get the ART materials (http://www.anim8or.com/download/preview/art_raytracer.html (http://www.anim8or.com/download/preview/art_raytracer.html)) what must I do where to make the floor reflective.... :-\

In your floor material set
specular : 0.600
rough : 10000
brilliant : 1

You may have to tweak these numbers until the reflection suits you ;)

Best advice I can give is to read up on the ray tracer documentation

http://www.anim8or.com/download/preview/art_raytracer.html

If the link doesn't work this can be found in the "v0.97 Preview" menu option at left, scroll down and look for the "Art Raytracer" link.  Examples are provided and explanation of the Art attributes system.

I've read that, but I don't get the things like 'Ks' and 'Kr', there are numbers given for those settings, but where can I find them... :-\

get nice texture, nice mahogany wood say, set your ambient and specular as normal but ramp up the specular to 0.4 you can adjust it either way ...if you ramp it up to 1 you will have full reflection with no texture so showing, so be warned!

Now you see the attributes icon click that, then click "New",  then type in specular in the top box and then check "string" and type in reflection in the bottom box , don`t worry about the KS and Kr for now, ( You have to set attributes for them in the attributes box) u can mess about with those later ..... apply the texture to your plane then render .

Shimples.

Ks and Kr are seperate attributes that you won't really need. You can use the default anim8or Specular box for it, it has the same effect.

as kreator mentioned, the amount of Specular you put on your material, determines the amount of reflection it will have, with 1 being a mirror, 0 having no reflection at all, you might want to play around with it to get the best result that matches the material you are using.

Kreator described how to get a normal reflection going ("New", Attribute: specular, String: reflection). There is also the glossy type that I like to use, since most reflections aren't perfect, but slightly glossy. To make your material have a glossy reflection, make a new attribute, type in specular at the top, and as a 'string', type glossy. (watch capitals, they matter). To change the glossyness of the reflection, you can change the 'rough' value of the anim8or material. again, the specular value changes the amount of reflection. Also you can play with the Brilliance to achieve different effects for different materials.

Make sure the renderer is set to Art by the way! otherwise you won't get any reflections.

Thanks ;) I'll try it again

It might have gone wrong with the capitals  :P, I'm starting the new render in 5 minits ;)

Wierd, might be my connection but about 5 minutes ago I kept getting redirected to this:
http://hwerror.hwpub.com/?ck=esb02oob60&et=1

Thanks for the tips guys, I've been reading along and trying these techniques, a render, not antialiased, but I understand how to do textures and reflections together now.
Cheers :D

Mine worked perfect, maybe a little to reflective still, but I'm getting how it works ;)

there you go........try turning the specular down a notch ...... dunno what shadows you are using in the lighting
but I would switch off multi jittered in the anti aliasing, stick some spot lights under the cupboards set as follows, Radius 150 200
           angle 15  25
           Cast Shadows @ 60
           Ray trace checked
           Soft 30
           Monte Carlo 6 12

Top of Wall cupboards could do with a pelmet as too the bottom just to finish it off.

Thanks, I'll try that ;) but about the rough and specular settings; spec-0.1 and rough-250,000, and I don't see very much difference comparing with lower settings =S

Jehovahenker - If you use the Specular string in your attribute, the rough value does not change much, except the highlights, which arent showing up on your floor.

The specular value should make a change - try setting it to 0, you will probably have no reflection, at 1 you should have a perfect reflection. I would suggest keeping it between 0 and 1 and not going into the negative ;)

To get the floor a bit more realistic you might want to add a bumpmap to the floor material as well.

Render is done, but for some reason the floor became grey =S

resolved the grey isue, just changed the roughness, and it's somewhat brown again ;)

That's normal, your ceiling is gray and your floor is reflecting the ceiling ;)

of course, didnt think of that.

started a big render about 6 hours ago, left to go swimming with some friends, when I return, the line is finished, but the buttons still show up grey (like it's still rendering) so I couldn't save it, so I'm starting it again =/

When that happens you can also take a screenshot and save the image in photoshop or something, you don't have to do the whole render again ;) Looking good though so far! The refrigerator might need some reflections as well as the uh (afzuigkap) and the faucet.

Good luck!

Ah, already thought about that  :P (second render also stuck when finished) so here is my 'paint'-result.
