Title: [ COMPLETE ] Challenge #6: Space scene
Post by: Kubajzz on July 05, 2009, 05:23:37 pm
Challenge #6: Space scene
(http://hongkiat.s3.amazonaws.com/space/First_Space_Scene_by_Phaese.jpg)

The task is simple: create and render a space scene.

It can be anything you want - a detailed model of our solar system, a sci-fi spaceship fight or Neil Armstrong walking on the moon... Everything is allowed as long as it can be called a "Space scene".

You can use any software you want for minor tasks (such as texturing or post-production), but most of the modeling and the final render must be done in Anim8or.

Your final entry should be one still image. Judging will be based on the best looking Anim8or render, the one who gets the most votes wins.

Post your progress, c&c, and/or final renders in this topic!

Deadline: Monday, July 20th, 2009

ummmm...

it says "still scene"... why not something animated? see... this sort of scene just begs for someone to use GIMP, or PhotoShop... not anim8or, to produce something.... doesn't it?

Oooh, I'm gonna try my hardest to join this, does the scene have to be in outer space? or can it be from inside a ship?

How much of the image has to be "Space"?
And what constitutes "Space"?

HOpefully i'll be able to join this, If not, i'll join the next one closest to my summer holls in about 2 1/2 weeks

The advantage of this topic is that it's as difficult as you make it.

If you decide to model the Earth and the Moon, than you'll definitely spend most of the time working on the textures in Photoshop/Gimp, because all you need to do in Anim8or is to create the 2 spheres... However, if you decide to create a fully detailed model of the International Space Station, then I believe you'll use Anim8or more than enough! It's just what you make it ;)

Just do whatever you want! If the scene is inside a ship, it should be obvious that the ship is somewhere in the space (a space ship that is standing on the runway definitely doesn't count for a space scene!).

Ok, now what does it mean "to be somewhere in the space"?

Here is a nice Wikipedia definition:
Quote
Outer space (often simply called space) comprises the relatively empty regions of the universe outside the atmospheres of celestial bodies. Outer space is used to distinguish it from airspace and terrestrial locations.

That's it. Just try to focus on those "relatively empty regions of the universe" ;)

Suppose we create a space coloney on the moon or mars or something. Does that still count as space?
Title: Re: Challenge #6: Space scene
Post by: 3Dgeek11 on July 05, 2009, 11:19:22 pm
I think this should clear up the "space" questions: As far as I know, as long as "space" is showing somewhere in the scene, and the overall idea is something other than earth, then yes, I'd say it counts. But that's just me. ;)

Also, I forgot, my DVD drive works, so maybe I'll get to show a WIP soon. :)

I don't think you can post videos for your entry...

Also, that prehistoric comp looks fun! I'll try to join this time!
News: My sis got the drives to work again, it was only going to take a minute, but I'm too lazy... J/k She wanted to do it.

So I can give you guys WIPs now. :)

Hey, thatīs a great idea for a challenge, even if most people have already a space scene done (at least 60% of the artwork shown in the forum is space related  :D ). Anyway, Iīll try to join the challenge, and I hope to be able to finish my scene this time. Iīve already started with the first model...

By the way, thanks for the 2 votes I get on the previous challenge. I didnīt deserve it...  :P

I trust you meant to say "Khaspah, you stole..."

I don´t mind to be confused with Kreator. I wish I had his style, hehe  ;D

Anyway, Ratticis, my Sputnik is going to be only a small part of the (intended) scene, so probably yours will be awesome. In fact, I did´nt look for info about it, only one picture! I don´t want to make a perfect scale and textured Sputnik, only the general idea everybody has about it...

Hi,I decided i'd try for this one.The first render is in anim8or with no tampering, whilst the second is a photoshop edit.it's still a WIP.hopefully i will be able to submit a finished product.....
The anim8or render jams with the bumpmaps on.... ???

Alrighty, I'll give this a go... though I really want mine to be an animated thing... but I'll try and limit myself.  No guarantees on finishing :P

Well, this is my scene at the moment... I call it "Love at first sight"  ;D

I have a lot of work to do on it, specially Iīd like to give the small planet a "moonlike" texture. Iīve just started with textures, so Iīm not very sure about how should I do it. Iīd also like to add other elements as a planet or a sun. Iīll do it depending on the time...

I like very much your scenes. My favourite at the moment is Ratticisī one. Very clean and attractive. Maybe a big storm over the Caribbean would be very dramatic, hehehe...

Ha ha ha great still Kreator love the motion blur.
Khaspah: very funny concept, just needs a little va va voom to the textures.
Great work all

Post by: Arik_the_Red on July 09, 2009, 02:37:03 pm
alright... Glad to see a couple funny ones!  At first everyone was doing such dramatic, realistic stuff I decided to go for goofy stuff...

I had hoped to post this yesterday, but was having problems with the planet rotation.  Yes, I know this is animated, but I plan to to a still-render as well as the animation.

Also, I may or may not get disqualified... but who cares.  EricAug and I are teaming up to work this one... it's for a fairly specific purpose which will show in the final work.

So, below, a still render of my roughly done planet (still needing more work), the moon created to circle it, and both together.

And, a test of the planet rotating...

Planet with moon, animated...

Thanks Khaspah, I like yours too.

And I just realized the sugnificance of the due date of this contest. 'Tis the 40th anniversary of the Appolo 11 moon landing.

or was it?........durn durn durn!.....with theremin sound effects
which set of ART settings would lend themselves more readily  to a space scene?
just specular reflection on ship materials at  the moment.
all anim8or including space mist.

wow, headwax! Did you form all of that in anim8or?

Here's a bit of cobbling together a few parts of my animated version... Will of course have a proper still-render done for contest purposes.... I need to work on the timing, but starting to make it come together a bit:

Hah :) I like the style arik!

As far as my render, yep all done in anim8or. Used the perlin terrain plugin. It's got 1400 odd faces.

here, another bit of work on the video side of my project...

One step more for my scene. Kreator, thanks a lot for your support! I promise to watch all your tutorials.

I want to add more elements and maybe change the lightning, but itīs starting to look more or less as Iīve got it in my mind, and that makes me very happy!!  ;D

I have to change the textures, add detail and try to model the background.
idea and background from Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Wonderful work by all.

Here is my render.  A different concept.   I hope to change a few things, but if I do not post more, this is my final render.

Title: Re: Challenge #6: Space scene
Post by: Khaspah on July 15, 2009, 09:19:43 am
Great work all

Tiodiego, it looks like an old videogame screenshot! Its great!!  :)

Indian8or: I like yours specially. Itīs very disturbing the fact that this green creature seems not to be affected by low gravity. The idea of the creature walking slowly towards the astronaut is great for an animation  ;D

Well, this is my final render until now. I have to avoid somehow the distortion on the upper left planet and Iīm not very sure about the textures and scale of the planet with ring, but more or less this will be the final scene...

Aw, too bad, Boywonda...

And here's my current render! =}

If I don't post more, (it's likely that I won't) then this is my final render/submission. =]

Indian8or: Awesome!
Tiodiego: It does look like an old video game. =] Looks great!

EDIT: I forgot to add shadows! Ack, I just might post here again.

That looks great! Even if it is a bit simple. =]

P.S. I have an an8 file with the size and proportions of 6 of our planets, I think. And it even has a semi-accurate orbit ring to show where it orbits the earth, sun and whatever orbits what. =P Anyway, if anyone wants the file, I'll give it to you. I made all the textures. But then I found a site that offered completely accurate textures for all the planets and grabbed them. But I'll give a link to the site and my model. Like I said above, if anyone wants.

There are so many cool ideas and works here I don't even know where to begin babbling and complimenting... but, here's the entry - a combination effort between EricAug and myself... We used anim8or for all the items in view, and Photoshop and GIMP for texturing and 2D, including adding the text and logo.

For those interested, the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Store is a real place in north Seattle, and a really fun little project for anyone wanting to pop in for a visit when in Seattle.

And, here we go...
Title: Re: Challenge #6: Space scene
Post by: EricAug on July 20, 2009, 11:52:47 pm
Just the text and the logo were added post render- no crazy post production work on anything here (and the only texturing is the panel in the ship and the earth of the planet) the rest is all anim8or-made.

Arik/Erig, that's excellent work guys!  I LOVE the planet with the exaggerated terrain and atmosphere relief, brilliant!  If I'm ever in Seattle (which really isn't very likely) I'll be sure to pop in, I do need a new charge cartridge for my laser blaster.

Thanks for the compliments.  I made the basic models... EricAug detailed out the rocket, did the clouds, texturing and material details for the planet, and created the space backdrop, which is applied to sphere that encompasses the whole scene.

If you're ever in Seattle, even if just for layover at the airport, I'd be glad to drive up and meet ya for lunch!

And thanks for  those who voted for me - you not only have taste, but you have style and amazing intelligence :)
